Dear SL Residents, I would like to suggest the creation of a Linden National Park to be open to all residents of SL. It could be a place to learn, explore and enjoy ( A nice break away from all the shopping malls ). I would like to know your thoughts.
Thank You
Heidi x
In the spirit of Yellowstone National Park, the Galopogos Oceanic Preserve, and Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Linden Island National Park will represent the birth of a natural awareness that will enrich the whole being of Second Life and, perhaps help to heal our Real World, our Real Home: Planet Earth.
Eco-tourism adventures (undersea trails like those in St. John, Tree-top trails as found in Costa Rica, encounters with Endangered Species: Mountain Gorillas, Siberian Tigers, Blue Whales) bring Second Life urban inhabitants a natural chance of adventure, unparalleled educational opportunies, and an opportunity to BE a part of the Spirit of Yellowstone both in this world and our real life ecosystems.
Linden Island National Park will be a santuary of natural wonders and informative video kiosks, insulated from urban chaos by oceanic geography yet accessible to all who journey to its mountains, beaches, and reefs.
Heidi and I are dedicated to the birth of the First National Park in Second Life, its creation, and the ongoing Stewardship and Care such a fragile environment deserves in order that it be preserved.
"We have illuminated the ocean floor with the lights of knowledge. We gazed into the depths and introduced the fish to the brilliant hues of their marine universe. We have discovered a New World for Humanity. From now on it will be my duty to convince Mankind to Protect and Cherish this World for Future Generations." Jacques-Yves Cousteau In the wake of Captain Cousteau; In the Spirit of Yellowsone; we ask that you, Govenor Linden, be the founding force that permits the creation of Linden Island National Park.
Thank you and best regards,

I love your idea of a national park. The only problem is whether LL would want to pay for the server themselves for this island. I think probably not which is a great pity. You are right, a lot of the world is full of malls and clubs but there are some really lovely parks and gardens for us to enjoy.

I agree, it would be great to have a National Park, but I could swear we had something like that not too long back...

Linden Labs cannot be expected to provide a national park, it's too expensive.
This is supposed to be world in which the players create the content and they create the scaffolding.
They have enough areas like Waterhead that are natural and serve as gathering places that this request should not be imposed on them.
Some residents have already created wilderness areas at their own expense and their efforts should not be undermined.
If you want a national park, form a group. Have three respected players serve as officers. Get together at least 6 if not 100 other players to pool the purchase price of a sim and pay the tier.
First, get the 6 players to pool the paid tier. When you have paid tier, you are ready to accept land. Spread over a lot of accounts, you're talking $5 and $15 tops per month to have this beautiful area.
Get together let's say 50,000 to 100,000 to start and just try preserving 8192. People always have such grandiose plans in this game but show people you can handle 8192 first and then they might trust you with more. You can always sell it if it doesn't work.

It may help if you connect up with Higbee Protagonist who has a National Parks Registry in world and also has a web site. He has put togther a lovely wilderness of his own too. Perhaps you can collaborate?

While I agree that one of the objects of Second Life is creativity, I don't really believe that the creation of a persistant peice world is that bad of a thing. It would be nice if we had point of reference in Second Life that was permanent. A beautiful Linden-owned park would not just be fun to walk through...it'd give us something solid in this ever-changing virtual landscape.
The scenery of the snow sims did not stay scenic for long. Now the only difference between it and the mainland is that the gorund is white. The new continent will become once the developers fully get their mitts on it. I think it'd be nice if we had *something* reserved for future Second Lifers to appreciate...

You might want to check out Higbee Protagonist's "SL Parks and Recreation Service Registry" you can find his kiosks around SL they are red and yellow mushroom shaped. We have one on FairChang Island and one in the Taber Sim at the Market Place. You clik on them and it gives you a notecard of all the park areas in Second Life.
As Prok pointed out,,, the Lindens supply us with the tools and we do the rest! So feel free to create your own park. There are a myriad of people that are interested in the same.

One World In Which To Dwell
04-18-2005 21:40
"In Wildness is the preservation of the World." Henry David Thoreau
At no time in our planet's history does this simple yet eloquent statement ring more true. The relationship that exists between humans and nature is one to be cherished and preserved for future generations of both our Real World and our Second Life World. Is it just a game? Is it just Second Life? The Avatars we create are extensions of ourselves with the capabilities of all the human emotion, creativity, hopes and dreams, and compassion that permeates our Real World Lives. Within these Avatars dwell the souls of real people who live on a small blue sphere Native Americans call Mother Earth. The world of Second Life is an extention of our home. How we treat Mother Earth is reflected in how we relate to the land, oceans, and creatures of Second Life.
"Setting aside wild places-fauna and flora-as ends in themselves will do two good things. It will respect the intrinsic value in such pristine nature. It will conserve places on the planet where humans, when they visit there, can experience their lives in this larger context. Either of these benefits is sufficient reason for saving nature as an end in itself"
Dr. Holmes Rolston 2003 Nobel Peace Prize: Philosophy/Environmental Ethics
The values of preserving Nature in Second Life are the same as those in any community: recreational, economic. scientific, aesthetic, historic, cultural, character-building, intrisic to name a few. Natural Value is realized when it is experienced, appreciated, remembered, and contrasted to the other aspects of our lives including our extended beings in Second Life. This World deserves the attention of us all and the difference that each of us can make.
"Every individual matters, human and non-human alike. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual matters."
Jane Goodall: The Jane Goodall Institute
Our ethics and our consciousness transcend a virtual void to bring us all together as real inhabitants on a real planet with a real need for compassionate stewardship. Second Life is a vehicle by which we can eliminate the space and time that separates us to join in a global endeavor to consider the future of our planet, our future, ourselves.
"A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community; it is wrong when it does otherwise."
Aldo Leopold:Naturalist/Co-founder of U.S. Forest Service
It is up to each of us.
"From now on It will be my duty to convince mankind to protect and cherish this world for future generations."
Jacques-Yves Cousteau

I believe that the Lindens should invest in open and shared community space -- like a central park. It would add much to a landscape currently dominated by sprawl.

If public goods are provided by the private sector they are consistently underprovided.
I'd like to see something like this as well.

From: Lianne Marten If public goods are provided by the private sector they are consistently underprovided. unless they are regulated no, there is some truth to what you say. And being one who appreciates Central Park (which is supported by public and private money and never would have happened without government intervention), I can see the point. That said, are the WA's and sandboxes not enough? I still like the idea of having Linden Lab keep a rolling pre-release of new sims open to the public (as they did with the new peninsula), that way there is always open frontier space yet LL's need to monetize land is served as is their goal to keep things changing/evolving.

I can't tell you what I would give to have a large open space with nice walkways and tall trees and benches and just stuff like that... with no clubs or signs or anything garish within the view... I can't tell you what i'd give because I have no idea But i'd really like it. The changing release of new lands is good, I like exploring them when they come out... but sometimes I just want a place that will be permanent. Maybe the new welcome area will be something like that... I can hope so. [edit] Unless the new welcome area is already out there, and i'm just extremely behind on my "new land exploring?"

It won't be done for another 3 weeks or so but it's at about 75% complete now. My fondest wish would be for Khamon and Higbee to buy up the rest of Federal and then we could have a whole national park sim.....

National Park
04-19-2005 10:59
Its been great reading everybodys thoughts re: 'The National Park ' . I have and still do enjoy exploring Parrot Island, The Forest of Kahruvel and the new Dove Ocean Island project. The owners/creators of these little green spaces should be applauded for their work and that they opened them to all SL residents , But, circumstances can change, what was once a forest could easily become a shopping mall due unforseen circumstances. A large National Island Park would be permanant fixture on the map, with no threat of concrete ever looming over it. I will contact the names that have been suggested Thank you .

Maybe an area dedicated to Forest or Park by the Lindens but turned over to residents who bid with the best plan (that fit the Forest/Park guidelines) might be interesting. It could change every month and would not become just the same old thing.

Earth Day
04-19-2005 15:22
Earth Day is Friday, April 22. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Earth Day. Share your Environmental thoughts and concerns with your freinds, neighbors, and the Lindens. Visit the natural areas which now exist through the efforts of private SL citizens...and when you have enjoyed the natural ecology of Second Life, explore the environment outside your own back door.
Earth Day...Every Day

I think this would be a good idea. I know some will say, do it yourself etc. But I think all of us have pourd our own time and money into ideas here. Why would it be such a bad thing for the Lindens to have something like this. It would be nice to see a park we can all enjoy. One that stays in the same spot for years to come. That doesn't get destroyed by other unsightly buildings or just plain odd creations..

Here's a thought...addressed primarily to those who own or are thinking about owning "zoned" sims. Or for a few groups who want to pool together. How about a sim where building structures are mostly high in the air between certain levels...let's say 250-500 feet? Maybe with bridges connecting the areas? This leaves the ground clear for terraforming and planting trees and other foliage. This isn't to say that one couldn't build structures on the ground but these might be limited to roads, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, gathering places and so forth.
As a seperate proposal one could also build underneath the ground a la hobbits and/or in combination with a "skybox" builds.
I'm not sure if this amount of skybuilding would block sunlight (perhaps those with Shadows on would experience this effect) but this might be a practical way of providing SL Park space while still allowing for people to build what they want up above.
As a side note, I experience much less client side lag when I build high up in the sky. This probably has to do with the fact that the amount my machine has to render has gone down due to fewer things in its draw distance range. This might change if more people were building in the sky but if they're building at different levels you might still see some clientside benefit in terms of lag reduction.
People would crash into things more when flying across the sim, but if a max height limit were imposed they would eventually be able to make their way across unimpeded or could fly practically unobstructed underneath a certain level (200 meters or less).
In summary, let's take advantage of the fact that we all can fly and build in the sky! Who says we have to build on the ground like we do in RL?

What a great idea!
I would be really impressed with LL if they actually did something like this.
