Perhaps the "wealthy paying for ratings" scenario could be avoided if the population of SL (who seeks such fairness) would simply say "no" to such a request? Besides, If the ritch pay money to be rated all the time..hey...they aren't going to be rich for long. 25L may not seem like much but if you abuse this system enough for it to matter it will add up rather quickly.

The stipends will be lowering so there will be less *free* money going into the game which means some "wealthy" people will be less likely to waste 75$ to triple rate someone just to get the rating back(less free money from ratings = less wasted money on ratings).

If this stops every noob from here to hell from triple pos rating me (without even speaking to me, or seeing my builds of course) and then getting upset when i don't return it then GREAT.

As for those who will now be stifled in their creativity by having less money to pay for uploads, land fees etc... maybe the point is to realize that triple pos rating everything that moves isn't as important as having enough money to make/buy content. You might have to only rate when you (lord help us!) mean it. And gosh, it could be worse...what if they charged you 10L to rez a prim? Or what if they charged you money to teleport at a rate inversly related to distance!? Insanity! oh wait...they used to do that.

It sounds to me like the new ratings/stipend system is moving more torwards helping the bottom of the heap have a small step to climb on instead of just being a way for everyone to get a bit (or larger not-so-bit) of free money. Less stipend to throw away combined with bigger sink holes for money = less money to waste over all = less filthy ritch players = more mid-income players.

Bottom Line, The Rich could give a damn about Ratings! And those that oppose stipends could give a shit about the Casual Player. You live your goddamn life like Secondlife if you like, I have a real one. I be damned if I am going to study and learn Photoshop, spend $400.00 US dollars for it plus whatever upgrades I need. Take Classes like im in College. YOU WANT TO TURN THIS GAME INTO ALL CRAFTERS AND SELLERS, SO BE IT! YOU WILL REAP WHAT YOU SOE!

Wouldn't it be better just to do away with the rating system altogether? Making rating this expensive, combined with lowering stripends and ending contest event support, will indeed bring about a very poor class of SL residence, who will be having the right to rate taken from them to a large degree. It will certainly stop rating abuse to large degree, among poor folks anyway...

Rates for L$1 for bonuses are crap. It allows people with no real commitment to the community access to large bonuses.

That being said, here's what I'd like to see... something like this.

First positive rate of someone costs L$5
Second positive rate of someone costs L$10
Third positive rate of someone costs L$15

First negative rate of someone costs L$50
Second negative rate of someone costs L$100
Third negative rate of someone costs L$250

Then ratings might actually be used for what THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE USED FOR ...

In addition, let's wipe out everyone's ratings and start fresh with a decent system.

-Flip

I couldn't possibly agree with you more than I do right now. If they are going to wack bonuses in half, make ratings actually be doable for noob AND long time avs while still retaining its meaning.

Uh oh....

I'm often exiled from SL durring the workweek due to real world demands, but it's always a thrill to log in and read "so and so has rated you positivly for build X" messages. The fact that my stuff was rated in my abscence (where I can't rate them back) suggests sincerity, which is flattering.

Yes, it would be entirely better. I'd love to see them completely gone. I can't remember the last time i looked at a persons ratings and/or cared. Of course i have gobs of neg ratings so this will be seen as me wishing i could get rid of them.

Is it just me, or are we a little premature in the doom-saying for these changes? None of us has even had a chance to live in SL with these changes in place yet.

We're still going to get stipends.. they're not cutting us off completely.

You can still rate someone, but you'll definately think twice about it and probably reserve it for someone you think truly deserves it instead of the rate 'mining' we see today.

Oh, ok. That's fine and thanks for letting people know that for those that want to make things. Im sure making things are fun to alot and some are here for other reasons. If that's compatible with Secondlife that's great.

But again, I am only here to socialize and possibly play around with a fun business that is socially interactive personally. I just hope alot of that aspect doesn't leave SL.

Nice program, horrible name. I will never understand why open source programs often have such crappy names. I still prefer Paint Shop Pro though - I guess it comes down to what you are used to. I worked in Photoshop for a long time, but I've never liked it and once PSP finally became feature equal and started to surpass PS on usability, I switched to it.

What's even worse is the creators refer to it as THE GIMP. The Gnu Image Manipulation Program. Jeez, why not just call if Super Helpful Image Tool?

Worst acronym I ever heard was during college... at U Penn...

PARMESAN

Penn's Alternative Recreational Music Entertainment Society And Network

How bad is that? hehehehe. The guy who ran it was nice though.
