Sometimes we're all a little hard on the noobs. We whine and moan about the ridiculous stuff they pull. But really, was it so long ago that we were doing stupid noob stunts too?

Post memories of your first steps in SL and some of the really dumb and obnoxious things you did before you knew better.

Why when I cast my mind waaaay back... okay, it was only September, but in SL time that's "way back"... I remember discovering that I could attach objects to my head. The first thing I did with that newfound power was to attach a 100-meter-tall glowing flamingo to my head and walk through Stage 4.

Oops. (Sorry, whoever was hosting that one. )

Now I know better, and I rarely do that. I prefer 100-meter-tall glowing penguins.

I remember when I first came, the thing to do was to post a "first impressions" thread with the main bugs/features you hate/like to see. I remember that the main bug I saw was that this game was on-line (I wanted and still do want an off-line version oh so terribly) and the biggest feature I wanted was in-world physics. Of course, it took little time to realize that there was in-world physics. This of course led to my ever-famous Plinko game, which started out as just a physics test and has ended up as an after-thought to those who've known me for all these months. :D

Edit: Hahaha oh man I can't wait 'til this thread grows, I can just tell it's gonna be a hit.

You prolly mean 30 or 50 meter tall since you cant link two objects that have their centers further than 30 meters apart.
When I was young and foolish... gee I barely remember. I didnt do anything back then. I could barely use SL. I spent ages in Prelude because it crashed every 5 minutes.
Boy, was the world busy back in Beta! When I first got on I remember that Prelude was like a party! Dozens of people there! When I entered the game there was a problem with too many people entering the game at once, so their avs overlapped and no one could move. People actually staid in prelude and gathered around chatting. I thought Prelude was all there was back then :)
I spent the longest time looking like crap because when SL stopped crashing every five minutes it didnt stop crashing when I went into appearance mode. I was white and often naked since my clothes refused to load for some reason. Oh and I had huge holes all over my body due to a weird graphical incompatibility - my limbs were detached from my body and i had no shoulders.
I was so lost. The world seemed huge even though it was just a rectangular strip of sims. There wasnt much land available especially because people always spaced their plots 4 meters apart. They prolly didnt know about the neighbor discount or something. I bought some land in da boom (around 80,40 i think) on one of those 4 meter strips of land ppl left unused and mostly forgot about it after that and I only ran into that plot when I took over the disco last summer. I rezzed the default cabin once or twice there but I found it so expensive that I didnt keep it around very long.
The first people I saw there were Heather Underhill and someone else I cant remember.
I have vague memories of some land being insanely expensive somewhere and thus being empty. Not sure though. I think it was to the east. There was a big empty space somewhere to the east I think, but before the outlands. You could see peoples builds abruptly stopping there. Cyfin Kato, one of my first friends, set up his shop there, he made medieval stuff like swords and shields.
I was afraid of going to the outlands for a long time because I didnt know getting killed just meant being teleported. I didnt know about cards, or ratings, but I had lots of money anyway because there wasnt a $3500 limit I think and i usually didnt spend any money except for teleports. Flying around often made me crash, and also turning around.
I remember the yamato thingy still being built. Or at least I think it looked rather simpler than what it looks like now. I remember talking to Cyfin about it and saying that it must have taken months to build LOL. I thought building was really hard mostly because I never bothered learning it and my first impression of the building tools were like GAH so many little fields and buttons and thingamajiggies. When I bothered to learn how to build though I got the hang of it in an afternoon LOL.
I didnt attend many events because flying frequently crashed me. Stage 4 was just an ugly slab of concrete back then. People sat on the ground around it, and there were so many of them! I wish I got that kind of attendance in my events ;P

I remember in my first couple of weeks, I built soooo many things - and didnt think to rename them. Three dozen objects in my inventory, all called 'object' can lead to some interesting mistakes...

I once attached my 60 meter tall, 200 odd prim-count UNLINKED airship to my head instead of a hat. It turned a few heads... at about 1 FPS! Must have taken me a good half hour to detach each and every prim! Right after that incident, I saw the wisdom in saving my regular AV as a 'costume' to instantly deal with such goofs!

And then there's the time I crashed a sim (cant remember the name) during someones event (sorry whoever you were). I had decided to whip out an auto-rezzing toy I had been working on to show someone, but selected the wrong version of it and ended up rezzing a monster! This little wooden cube continued to rez physics-enabled spheres until the place looked like a kids ball-pool, and then the sim disapeared.
I was so horrified, I didn't log back on for days! lol

Iam still new and still attach crap to my head that doesnt go on my head.....and i still jump up in the air when i get excited and dont hit "enter" before i type. Not too long ago a took something out of my inventory that I had no idea what it was....it was called "Massive 4th"......well it was massive and it paniced the hell outta me cuz as every rocket was shot in the air it was eating my money away till i had NO money. The smoke was so thick...and I couldnt even see to take the object back.....I called on VIN (group) and begged for ppl to help....some just laughed and closed the session, but others came....no directions were needed for the huge plumb of smoke.....finally some told me to turn off particals. completely embarressed......... anyhoo

My first pad was a shack 100m high in the air that featured a 50 foot rotating bong on top of it. Inside were posters of the Fonz, JJ from Good Times, and Mike Tyson eating a baby's ear, selling for $30 each.

When I first started, I did not know you could copy objects. I spent forever trying to build my first house. Trying to get seperate prims (from scratch) the same size and thickness to make walls was hell.

I think I might know this club you speak of... (and indeed the proprietor)

Actually, I think I might have been there at the time.

My silliest moment deals with the 1st piece of land I ever bought. It was in Freelon on top of a very steep hill. I was so excited about buildng my home atop this rock where several neighbors already had some nice builds. The first think I wanted to do was terraform a bit to make my parcel somewhat level. Well I didn't know about the 45 degree limit, and the land tool bug with "raise land" actually lowering land on hills. I dropped a large portion of the hill, leaving 2 of my neighbors perched atop spindles> I was so embarassed I moved...

I didn't do much when I first joined. I remember Jenn Linden said "hi" to me, and I was kinda afraid to respond. Prelude was boring back then. I was the only dot on the map. I teleported straight from Prelude to the Alt Zoom and I had no idea what was going on. It took me 3 days to make my first build, and another week to learn how to attach it. I didn't know about force sunset then, so I had to stop working whenever it became night. I still wear my necklace, as poorly built as it is. I think about making it straight sometimes, but I always decide against it.

My first house was a ramp, a floor, four pillars, and a wall... and it was in Ritch, within viewing distance of Misnomer's Clothing.. place.. thing. It was pretty painful. Neon green and red. I still build in weird colors, though...

I remember going to the lottery and the trivia beforehand. I went almost a half hour early, just to make sure I was there. I remember the question, "A man is caught by an enemy force and they tell him 'If you lie, you will be shot. If you tell the truth you will be hanged.' He walked away unharmed. How did he do it?" I remember seeing Yuniq there, she always got all those questions :^p

I remember the Smallville guy who went to Alexis's first event an talked about how much better There was then SL, then he gave Dave all his money and left. I remember Char telling people to tie my nads together. Gah... I've got a lot of SL memories. That was just my first month or two! Wow... March was a long time ago...

I honestly never attached something weird to my AV... but then again... I didn't know how for a week...

i remember when i was a dumb noob, and Yuniq Epoch introduced me to the sword O.O
so in discovering this weapon, i decided it was fun to hit the noobs off into the distance as they popped up.

Well when I arrived on May 17th, I didn't see much of anyone in Prelude. I spent 3 days there I think trying to figure out how things worked! Never having gamed before all was new and awesome. I wandered aimlessly for days (ask Teeny and Nyna!). I didn't buy any land for along time because it was all "Public"! LOL Someone finally explained that one. I settled in DeHaro with the generic cabin which Harald Nomad helped me to set right. He and Joan were very good to me.

I went to the events that were available and always saw Teeny Leviathan and Kanker Greenacre (Kank was good at trivia).

I don't remember seeing a Linden. I didn't start building anything until my first Marina in Shipley when the "Color" sims opened in mid June and land became available in Shipley.

My main problem was attachments. I couldn't adjust them. I would spend 45 minutes to an hour trying to manuver an object to the right spot swearing at the computer as the item would jump 2 feet past my head, or imbed itself in my body. I asked people for 2 months how they were able to adjust stuff so easily, but nobody could help me. Finally someone asked me if I had snap-to-grid on. I was so embarrasswed.

In SL I'm still young, and still foolish..

(Shout out to the rest of the 'shopping cart racers' - woot!)

As for being young and STUPID - I'd have to say adjusting my AV for the first time in the welcome area and looking through my inv..

Pants (worn) - well I guess I don't need them in here then - *DELETE* *DELETE* *DELETE*

Then spending 1/2 hour running behind trees while people tried to 'welcome' my half-nekkid self and trying to make a new set.

1/2 hour hiding under the water in Venice yeilded a pair of what could best be called flared thermal underwear.

Second best stupid act was building my first columned dome.
I'd just been introduced to the concepts of linking and locking... so I meticulously highlighted every little bit of my first structure.. went to the object page, and promptly hit 'physics' instead of lock.

I sat in stunned silence as 2 days work collapsed and toppled into the sea.

Siggy.

Once I attached a rocket to my head and Kerstin kicked me out of her lottery. I was dumb.

LOL Darwin - I remember that! That was the first event I ever attended, and I was sitting here thinking 'these people are seriously weird, what am I doing here??'

My first land was in Da Boom, several little 4x4 squares because I didn't know you could stretch the banding box when you bought it. Then I tried to lower it a bit, and ended up with a deep well that I couldn't fix, so I put a huge cube over to cover it and coloured it green.

Oh yeah, and setting my alarm clock for 1am so I could get up and log in back in the days when SL was only open 4pm-10pm PST.

I am still and young and foolish and *still* amaze myself with the stupid things I can do and come up with. ;)

One of the most memorable was very early on.. probably my first week. I had NO idea about SL economy, taxes and such, but I knew I wanted a home.

I went to Skee's and bought Mistress Midnight's lovely victorian home, which I proceeded to rez right on top of Skee's building!

I had no idea I had done this... and wandered around the rest of the day wondering where my $2400 went and why I had such a jump in taxes. To my horror, the next day, I went back to Skee's and off in the horizon was my house on TOP of the building.. looming in the sky. My mouth hit the keyboard. You never saw anyone point and click so fast to get that thing down. :)

When I was a newb...

I would see a dot on the map, and get just close enough to see the name, and then run away becasue I didn't know them.

but otherwise, i think thats the only dumb "newb" thing I have done - the rest are dumb vet things.

LOL, I remember that. I wondered why that house was up there! :)

Sometimes I still like to attach a starter cabin to my head just for old time's sake.
