George Orwell got it only half correct--
The dictionaries in 2050 won't be newspeak words like "Minipax"; they'll contain an extended form of AOL acronyms.

Oh so very true!

Okay, I'm guilty of the netspeak from time to time, usually when pressed for time or trying to get around the nanny censors in some games.. So, WTF is one of my more commonly used ones. LOL is okay.. if used sparingly. I'm usually on text-based sites and in once case, I screen applicants for sanity and such before allowing them the gracious red-stamp of approval.

I once had a player who ended every sentence with LOL..
"I'm sorry, my bad. LOL"
"What? LOL"
<dances across the room LOL>

After a while.. I wanted to kill the LOL. It had invaded my dreams, my thoughts and finally, I could stand it no longer. I told LOL that I was not approving them, because I wasn't looking for hyenas... (World of Darkness players will get this one, especially the ones into Shifter)

Simple K's, BRB, BBL, those are fine. Usually when I deal with this, it's in a crowded spammy situation where, for the sake of speed and to keep things down to managable, people will just type them instead of the full words. But to shorten every word? Riiiighhhtt.. and we thus dub them "no0b" and go on with life.

I would no more speak on the internet in gibberish than I would go to dinner with a friend wearing t-shirt and gym shorts, soiled with spaghetti sauce, sweat and rotten milk.

You gotta respect yourself and in so doing, show respect for other people. That I care enough to form a cogent, readable message for your reading shows that I respect you and that I respect the dialogue that I wish to share with you.
Disturbingly, last summer a woman with whom I attended high school invited me to dinner that we might "catch up". She was wearing exactly that when I arrived - the spaghetti stains and sour milk due more to her newborn infant than to anything else. It was an evening of being with someone who cared not one whit about anyone else but herself.

You illustration is more than apt.
