From: Alan Palmerstone I think Prok hit it right on this one. Unfortunately, this is one of those times where Prok could say the Sun is hot and folks start to argue. Huh?? From: someone I am one of those lefties and I will use your voting for bush in my determination of how I am going to deal with you. When I see someone is leaning towards being an asshat and then find out they contributed to the evil that is running the US, it is usually the last straw for me. Do I ask it upfront? No. That is rude! But if you bring it up and expect me to congratulate you, that is not gonna happen. I am not going to lecture. I will just go away. I don't rush into exchanging cards for exactly that reason. However, this apparently isn't what happened. The other person brought it up, and by her account, they were getting along great until he brought it up and she answered honestly. And I judge a person by their actions of course, but typically their day-to-day actions and attitudes, not just what political party they favor, though that might make me a small bit more cautious.

What I learned in communication in college was that my professor was a manwhore ... AND the topics one should avoid when talking to a stranger is: politics, religion, money, and sex. Of course, people break that rule all the time, but if everyone just stuck to food and hamsters I really do believe this world would be a happier place. Cheese, okra, and pie bring people together!!!

Alot of strangers get my, "The world is doomed and humankind sickens me" small talk.

Politics... religion... if you want harmorny don't talk about them with people you dont know well. But I know that for some people these are very important, in which case I suppose its better that they get it out of the way early on. Personally I try not to bring the topics up, but if you do, dont expect me to just nod and agree with you Oh, and I know for a fact that there are Bush supporters in SL. I see them flashing the "W" sign to each other all the time. Pancakes with vermont syrup, yummy! What kind of cheese though? Creme cheese? Feta?

I don't think it is 1 + 1 = 3 so much.
It's more like - and I said this to my husband the other night out of my frustration with these forums, and I used these exact words to describe the forums (including myself) - it's more like, "Two plus two equals four." Then, "No, you idiot, one plus three equals four!" "No, it's two plus two!"

We hadn't spent much time together, so I wouldn't go so far as to say we were "friends" yet. We were on eachother's friends lists.
See, it might not be just that I voted for a certain person that ticked him off so much. He told me millions are dead in Iraq. I told him there are many many more issues to base your decision on than just the war. Yes the war is a huge issue. It's not the only issue. Perhaps he lost family in the war and he is ultra sensitive about politics right now. To him maybe that IS his world. Well I never claimed to be an expert when it comes to politics, but when elections come around it's pushed in your face to "vote, vote, vote!" Everyone has a voice! That includes every bum on the street, and every kid that just turned 18 who might not know even as much as I do... who will vote based on maybe just one issue they care about, not knowing or not even considering other issues. Someone who is scared instantly at the thought of war.... someone who is gay and wants to get married.... and, you get the picture. There are millions of people who will vote with their hearts based on one issue that touches them personally the most.
I had a lesbian friend who was republican also. They are somewhat rare.. atleast that's what she told me. I think the fact you can be gay and republican at the same time simply shows you're opening up your eyes and taking a look at a wider picture.. not just voting on a single issue like many, many people do.

You know what radiant, I have encountered many people with those views in SL. Mostly they are the people who just watch the news, and believe evreything they see. There is a lot more to voting and presidents than just one issue. I have had people tell me they hate bush because a friend or family member was sent over seas to "DO HIS JOB!" Yea, so some people lost someone. I was there 2 years ago. I was in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Philipines. I was wounded by a landmine that my best friend stepped on! So I sat there and watched my best friend get blown up. he wasn't the last of my friends to get killed either. I lost 5 very close friends in the war, but I don't blame Bush. I actually still love the guy, and think he is doing a great job in most things, but as with every president, there are those things that are lacking. Its normal typical life, and people like that just need to read up on some history. How about president coolidge who slept 13 hours a day? There have been much worse, but people just like to see the here and now, and go with the "Popular Vote" Getting back to the subject, those people are not too prevelent to the point where you will see them every day or week. SL is filled with all sorts of artistic people who are very nice and helpful. they learn tons about SL, and then turn around to help the new people. its a great world, and I think you will have a great time here as long as you avoid those sketchy few.

Nooo...

From: Radiant Jewel I met someone in the WA last night and we chatted for a while. He asked if I would be on tonight and if I'd hang around with him for a while. I agreed. Tonight I waited for him to log on. Once he finally did we began exploring and chatting some more. He asked who I voted for in the last presidentail election. Rather than telling him it was none of his bussiness, as I should have done, I told him who I voted for. He then proceeded to talk to me like I was a stupid kid, then told me to leave and removed me from his friends list.
Maybe it's just me, but I thought this was one of the oddest encounters. Are things really to the point that we're condemning people.... WHOLE people... based on their political beliefs? Should I wear a sign stating who I voted for last year so that no one's time is wasted? Is this place as full of weirdos as it seems to me right now? Just that one person Radiant. People in SL feel they can get away with more in RL than they do elsewhere, but that's only because they are sitting at home where they feel safe and comfortable. But to chalk up all of SL because of one person's idiosyncratic bias, just won't work. Better to realize that person was just a doo-doo head. Crow P.S. This is the last time we ever speak if you voted for Bush *kidding*
