Fact of the matter is, I don't even use them anymore, I've just been too lazy to take them down. But they're on my land, so no worries.

I lived in Crimson for a long time but decided to move since the new owner of the sim has great plans for it. He owns the whole sim now except for your 16 meters in the middle of it. Sure you are within your rights to keep your scanner and 16 meters but I'm sure he would be very happy for you to sell that 16 meters of land you say is useless to you at normal prices (L100 maybe?) and let him get along with his project without having this piece missing from his property.

Hey, would the "checkerboarding" rule apply to this?

This has happened before in other threads. LL has been nice and dealt with at after complaints from the landowner. The holder of the plot eventually sold it fo 16 L$ to the owner of the surrounding land. I think that checkerboarding applies.

I concur...

If he's been contacted yet refuses to sell the land, seems like checkerboarding to me.

Sadly the rule about checkerboarding was removed from the CS... so many newbies won't understand wtf it means.

What about a land scanner, or say a multipurpose device that did more than just scan land, that flew from sim -> sim. Would that be ok?

Or does the AVie have to be in the same sim with the object if you don't own land? ( Like someone showing a friend their Pixel creature or someone riding over in a hover bike?)

I'm asking specifically the people who are/were pissed at the an object 'on their land'. What if it just flew over you land, or flew over the sim and scanned while it moved? And if that's fine, how often can it fly over? 1ce an hour? 1ce a minute?

Are free roaming objects outlawed or not?

Come to think about it...

1. Even if they removed checkerboarding from TOS they probably would still enforce it.
2. The only land the land scanner is scanning is the 16m^2 plot and then the owner's rest of sim. That sounds like abuse to me.

For that matter. Hehehe I'm starting a new thread on "Idea to ban Land Scanners"

Ah, yes. I think I'll make self-replicating prims that orbit anyone they touch, make them travel at mach 6, and make them clear and transparent, all keyed to search and destroy you, Chance Small.

Because I can, you see.

But I'll just be too lazy to clean them up. Hope you don't mind.

Poppycock!

Land scanners are how the 'noveau riche' go about it, not hard sweat and honest markup!

Ok guys, good news and bad news.

Good news is, I found a way to crash over 90 sims that are connected to each other WITHOUT the use of spawning objects!

Bad news, I have already placed this item on small, 16x16 sq meter parcels around the world, in 4 different sims that should be able to bring down the grid, they will activate in 30 seconds, I WOULD take them down, but I wont. Because they are on my land, and im too lazy.

Edit: There goes the grid, next comes the hard drives!

Correcting my own post.

I noticed that land that is purchased but the purchase is not completed (i.e. the purchaser does not confirm the tier increase), also reverts to Linden-owned fairly quickly - about a week or so. I have seen this for land won at auction and then claimed (in Afton), or First Land lots (in Hanson), and for lots bought in regular player-to-player transactions (in Ohno).

Land bought at auction but not claimed lasts much longer currently, but I would expect LL to tighten up on that soon. I see a huge number of "still blue" parcels won by at least one large purchaser sitting there for weeks on end. One way to avoid tier fees, I suppose. I'd like to at least see a rule added where you can't bid on any more auctions if you have unclaimed auction land over 7 days old.

And yes, I spend far too much time repeatedly checking About Land windows ;) All the above examples were on land next to land I owned, though - I swear!

Ahh. The clouds part. Now I know why a well known land baron is sitting on a huge parcel out my front door without claiming it for a week now. Sigh. Thanks for the enlightenment Lisse. The most frustrating part is that I wanted to tier up and buy some of that land but LL saw fit to break the sim into only 2 huge and 1 medium parcels. The one which adjoins my property was simply too big for me to purchase due to the fact I would have to go up more tiers than I am willing to. I resigned myself to the fact I wont get the "front yard" I have been waiting months for unless I can talk the land baron into breaking off a chunk and selling it. Not such a bad thing, I just wish said person would get their ass in gear and develop or parcel it out sometime soon.

Hehehehe. (S)he is also sitting on a huge parcel outside my front door too! But I'm quite happy with that as it means I have views of snowy pines for a while longer before the telehub commercial cubes move in, and maybe, just maybe it will go back to auction and I'd be able to afford to purchase it the next time around....

But yes. I've been thinking about ways to stop abuse of the land tier/auction system in this way without also penalizing people who want to bid on land, but win it when they can't get in-world to claim it (perhaps they're on vacation or something).

What I think would be fairest is that when a resident wins an auction, a timer is triggered when they next log in-world. This should also be accompanied by an informational window that pops up on log in (not an IM, as those get lost in the login spam at times).

It would inform them that they have 24 hours to claim the land they just won. (Maybe less?) If they do not claim it within that time frame, it goes back to auction. Perhaps there could be a "special cases" email address where you can give a reason why the claiming did not take place in the time frame allowed - which would prevent the massive abuse we currently see, but would allow for e.g. a person needing to sell to a neighbor before claiming the new land.

The more I think about this, the more I feel it is needed. It is frustrating to see people "camping" on land which they're not paying tier for, but meanwhile preventing other people from owning it and using it.

Edit: I've started a thread for this issue in Feature Suggestions

I agree completely. It's really a way to skirt the purpose of tiers. One can hold ALOT more land than their tier allows because they haven't accepted it yet. I really see no reason why auctioned land acceptance procedure should be any different than that of player to player acquired land.

I dont think they should be outlawed, unless their effects on the sim are at all noticable. Outlawing them would kill so many cool ideas.

But I digress, this is a topic worthy of another thread.

I have seen some kind of sim scanners once when I was around 500m up in Miru... I took several screenshots of them, as they were spaced approximately every 100m or so along sim borders... I can't remember the name if the guy who had them up but I called him over and asked him what they were for and he told me that they should de-rezz soon. I didn't wait around for them to de-rezz but I haven't checked to see if they ar4e there since... I will post some screenshots when I get home and see if any of you have seen this type of thing before.
