This is a poll, so wait for the options Basically I'm interested to know how the advent of video on a prim has affected your SL experience? Was it a killer addition? Is it something you barely see? Has it enabled you to do something new that you couldn't do before? I think I've only ever watched one video on a prim since it's been around and that was the day it was released (apart from watching one or two to test preview). I can't think of anything that's included video that's made me want to go see it. I'd love to know what video in SL has meant to you. I've tried to give a wide span of options, but I'm no pollster so if I've left something out I apologise!

I haven't seen it used very often, yet. I find it fascinating and exciting as a concept, but I don't see that option on your poll

I thinking streaming video is important to SL. However, I've never actually watched a video on the main grid, only in the test grid. Then again, I don't listen to streaming music either.

It hasn't changed my life much, but I'd still like to attend one of those Mystery Science Theatre events...

I am going to be starting an exciting bill board service that use flash videos streamed to SL. I really havent seen it used in SL for much of anything else yet.

Interesting, so far "I wouldn't miss it if it went away" is in the majority, I thought I was an odd one out for not even turning the function on in my prefs ! Really I just cannot see the point of wasting my bandwidth. When I want to see a film I'll turn off my computer and go and loll in front of the TV with a DVD. But I'm happy that it makes some people happy that's what's important, it's just not a feature I can be bothered with.

Well...I don't see my option of choice up there, which is that I think it's not being used for a very useful purpose other than entertainment, but that entertainment is pretty damn fun!
So far I've watched a porno movie in an SL theater, which was fun. And I've watched alot of old three stooges and B-movie stuff on my own land, which was fun, and I've went to MST3000 at the Elbow Room, which is such a wonderful event! Sat and made tons of wise-cracks and listened to folks with some fantastic and very quick wit and laughed long and hard while watching some truly great finds by the owner..who's name escapes me atm.
Probably not what some would call useful, but damned entertaining.
I wish i knew how to set up a server for it, I would use it alot more.

I voted the last option. hehe.. I forgot it was put in, and I haven't been able to get in world since it was. So I have yet to see this feature in action. I'll have to hunt down someone to show me next time I make it in world (RL swamped right now )

For about the first week I think we tried to find every possible use, then realized it just wasn't all that stellar.

I've enjoyed it. Annoying people with things like Magical Trevor on repeat play is OH-SO-FUN! MST3K has been fun as well.

It had a novelty factor the first week.
Haven't looked at it since.
I think the big roadblock for most people is bandwidth. Who can afford to host movies streamed to SL?

Streaming video is a "nice-to-have" feature, but is by no means LL's version of a killer app.

The biggest problem with streaming video was the horrible format choice. By limiting it to Qucktime, about 75% of the streaming content available online is not available for use in SL. On top of that, the implementation has been buggy and laggy. It certainly can be fun to sit and watch a video in SL with some friends - but the experience is pretty limited because of the implementation. I hope for future improvements, including better format support beyond Quicktime.

I would have said, I like it but I don't use it much.
My problem is I start lagging, it gets worse and worse, then I have to log off.
The best use of it I have found is watching it by myself on my own property while I build something. That way, the lag problem is much slower, and I can go on happily for an hour or more. But the problem is still there.
So there I am, on my own property, running "Reefer Madness" while making a chair, while behind my computer is the TV on. lol

You left out the option "I never turn it on because it crashes my client too often". So I voted for "i wouldn't miss it" (because I don't dare ever use it anyway)

To date, I've not seen a single video inworld. The demo in The Preview Grid was interesting to watch. Is anybody doing anything more practical than showing theatrical movies with the video feature yet?

I haven't seen many, but my experiences have been enjoyable. Like watching cartoons with a friend while we chat, or how recently I was surprised by an animated short in the new Midnight City, and decided to just sit down and watch it. My life hasn't changed, but it's these little encounters that make things a little more fun.

Elex's events are fun - but the way it is set up you need to stream your own content. If it allowed real video we could stream commerical content and have a collective heckle at something else.
For example during the UK general election we could have streamed the tv coverage of the voting in world. A club could stream a music tv channel.
Streaming video has a greater barrier than streaming audio. With streaming audio you don't need to have your own station to stream music....

I thought it was a great idea when they first introduced it, and I enjoyed playing with it in the Preview. But I have yet to see any Video in SL that doesn't crash or freeze me when I try to view it in the main grid.

I've never enabled video/media streams, and only enable music streams when I know I'll be at a plot for a while. Normally, I listen to my own preferred stream via iTunes. This way, when a good song is playing and I get a TP, I don't have to decide between hanging around 'til the song ends, or clipping out of it. And when I want to re-position mv av off the plot while building, I don't lose the music.
As for video/media, I've yet to find an interest in parking my av somewhere, zooming into a video screen and watching moving pictures. I doubt I'll ever find this interest. So, until the streams become interactive and serve a purpose (and I don't mean start/stop/rewind/channel select), they'll be disabled.
I'm thankful I'll miss all the 'Flashy' advertisements as well.

I wish I could stream the NBA playoffs in. I'd have a sports bar built before you could say Detroit Pistons.
