Hi, I'm an editor at a national U.S. women's magazine and we are looking for an American woman, ages 20s-30s, who is willing to speak about how her addiction to Second Life has impacted different areas of her life-especially on top of today's dismal economy.
The economy has made so many of us edgy, anxious, depressed and frightened about the future--the kind of feelings that make us vulnerable to addiction. We'd like to highlight a woman in her 20s-30s who has an addiction to Second Life who can speak about the effects of her addiction on her career or her family/relationships.
Please respond to this post if you are interested in telling your story. We will protect your identity.
Thanks!

A suggestion for you: how about if you pair that story with another that talks about how second life has HELPED someone through these difficult times? For example, SL has been used by many many people to restructure their self-image in ways that carry over into RL. That would be more helpful to your readers, in showing them a positive way to use SL.
Any good game can become an addiction. The number of folks addicted to Freecell, wasting time for hours a day, I'm sure far exceeds the number addicted to SL. In SL you can actually socialize, make money, and find an outlet for stifled creativity.
What magazine are you writing for? .

Thanks for your post, Iliana. I'm not implying that only American women can be addicts, but as I work for an American magazine, I'm looking for an American woman to share her story with our readers.

Instead of looking for something to fit into a preconceived article why don't you find out how SL has had an impact on people during this time of economic hardship? For instance, I know people who can spend time with far-flung relatives in SL when they can't afford to take a plane trip to another town or country. There are probably lots of positive and negative ways SL has had an impact.
Addiction is *so* 20th century.

I think SL addiction stories is a great topic and I find it quite fasinating.
I just don't see why it has to be Americans, the whole world does not evolve around the USA!

Scar~ Why only young ladies? Because only people below 30 are newsworthy/attractive/have any sort of life. That's pretty 20th century too, given the demographic of rising age of the peak number of population. Cali

Cali Wow totally disagree with that statement, on so many angles-would not even want to start. Expecially since in SL you can pretend to be 20-ish or "across all demographics" a person can say or pretend to be anything they want in SL. With the survey they are doing they should include anyone that hs ever had it effect their personal life. I know I would be more apt to read it if it included the whole instead of the slice.

It's not a survey, it's a story. And it's obviously already been written. They just want to pop in some "sources".

Did anyone happen to see the Real Life 'Stroker Serpentine' being interviewed on American Morning TV? Basically, Second Life was made out to be a concentrated solution of Temptation and Smut. Does anyone feel that this might be taking a look at SL from a negative angle? I think the angle suggested by Osprey Therian should be the one covered, or at least alongside the original for fairness' sake.

Thanks! Currently, videogame addiction is not a valid psychological diagnosis. The term appears to only exist in soft-news headlines on slow news days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaming_addiction

From: Wulfric Chevalier Nice to see a journalist approach a topic in an unbiased way. I'm not sure it's entirely unbiased, given that gaming addiction is not in the DSM ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnostic_and_Statistical_Manual_of_Mental_Disorders). In fact, it was rejected for inclusion in the next edition of the DSM on the grounds that there is no substantial evidence gaming addiction exists ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaming_addiction#Possible_diagnosis). The fundamental premise of the article is "Is it possible to develop a disorder that all authoritative sources strongly suggest does not exist in reality?"

Seriously. Given the premise, I'm almost certain that's what's going to happen in the end, unless the OP is willing to change the premise to reflect accepted science.

SL Addiction vs Other Addictions
12-15-2008 16:43
While any addiction can be harmful to your health, I see SL as a way to keep drunk drivers OFF the road and cyber sex as a way to control STD's!
