Oh, come now. Stop drinking the rightwing kool-aid and look at the story in its context. Here, let me help you . . . (note that this vote had nothing to do with recognizing the American Federal Holiday known as Christmas). From: someone War in Iraq, war against terrorism, war in Afghanistan, move over -- today, House GOP leaders have decided there is a more pressing war to attend to: the fictional war against Christmas, which apparently requires protection for Christmas symbols. And what happened when Democrats asked that the symbols of Chanukah be protected along with the symbols of Christmas? The House GOP simply said "no."
This afternoon, 26 House Republicans -- together with the GOP leadership -- will be forcing the full House to vote on whether House members support the "symbols and traditions" of Christmas, and whether they disapprove of the utterly mythical "attempts to ban references to Christmas." Today's roll call vote comes on the heels of a House floor debate held last night regarding H. Res. 579, a resolution "Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected." During the debate, Democratic members asked the Republican author of the resolution, Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-VA), if she would permit the symbols of Chanukah and other holidays to be included in the protection of the resolution -- and she refused. http://njdc.org/issues/detail.php?id=491&iss=2 The vote "against Christmas" was a vote against bigotry and stupidity, the intent of the GOP leadership. Duh.

Rep. John Dingell (D-MI): "Madam Speaker, I have a little poem." From: someone 'Twas the week before Christmas and all through the House, no bills were passed `bout which Fox News could grouse. Tax cuts for the wealthy were passed with great cheer, so vacations in St. Barts soon should be near.
Katrina kids were all nestled snug in motel beds, while visions of school and home danced in their heads. In Iraq, our soldiers need supplies and a plan, and nuclear weapons are being built in Iran.
Gas prices shot up, consumer confidence fell. Americans feared we were in a fast track to ..... well. Wait, we need a distraction, something divisive and wily, a fabrication straight from the mouth of O'Reilly.
We will pretend Christmas is under attack, hold a vote to save it, then pat ourselves on the back. Silent Night, First Noel, Away in the Manger, Wake up Congress, they're in no danger.
This time of year, we see Christmas everywhere we go, From churches to homes to schools and, yes, even Costco. What we have is an attempt to divide and destroy when this is the season to unite us with joy.
At Christmastime, we're taught to unite. We don't need a made-up reason to fight. So on O'Reilly, on Hannity, on Coulter and those right-wing blogs. You should sit back and relax, have a few egg nogs.
'Tis the holiday season; enjoy it a pinch. With all our real problems, do we really need another Grinch? So to my friends and my colleagues, I say with delight, a Merry Christmas to all, and to Bill O'Reilly, happy holidays. Ho, ho, ho. Merry Christmas."

I've been waiting for this issue to come around again. And in the spirit of rampant political-correctness at the expense of all sanity: Via www.samandfuzzy.com/ecards

But douchebags make good ratings. : hrug::

From: someone Haha, I love the Democrats' weird obsession with Fox News. "Oh my god, there's a news station that isn't totally jam packed with lefties! We must destroy it before people start learning the truth about us!" Well, we used to pick on Joseph Goebbels, but he's not around anymore. And you know, Faux News does indeed help many of us on the Left "learn the truth" about y'all and frankly, we're very concerned about how gullible the American Volk are. Luckily, John Stewart's The Daily Show gives us a little respite and hope. And, yeah, yeah, I know all about Godwin's Law so don't even bother, Bill. Question to Bill O'Reilly (aka Stankleberry Sullivan): Why aren't there any good comedians on the Right (and by "good comedians" I mean those on the Right who are TRYING to be funny so no invoking of Ann Coulter).

How do you not recognize Christmas?
To me, gaudy pine trees, annoying music, crowds of rude shoppers, enforced mirth, unwelcome family visits, obligatory parties at your boss' house, rampant consumerism and ugly light displays at your neighbors house can only mean one thing:
Christmas!
How could they not recognize that?

Am I the only one who thinks that Colbert is the funny one? I don't have cable, but I saw the Colbert report when I went back to Texas a couple of weeks back and he was funny as hell. John Stewart is personable, but seemed tame in comparison.

Can you please try to say something intelligent?

So glad to see the Republican congress voting on the important issues! Your tax dollars hard at work stroking the paranoid delusions of the Christian right and their persecution complex. "Hmm, let's see... We control all three branches of government and we make up 80% of the population.... Help! Help! We're being repressed!" Yay, it's fun to live in a theocracy!

From the sixteenth century to the present, comedians have been commenting on politics, and in many cases having a profound effect on political changes

Hmmm. Shoving a pagan holiday colonialized by Christians down our throats, or working on legislation designed to make sure that government intelligence doesn't break down again, or social security works, or.... Which do I want to see Republicans working on? Hmmm.

From: Selador Cellardoor From the sixteenth century to the present, comedians have been commenting on politics, and in many cases having a profound effect on political changes Richard Pryor was well known for telling the straight truth. The ability to slyly or ironically tell the truth as it is, rather than how it ought to be, is what makes a lot of comedy funny. Playing The Fool is an ages old satirical device and even in King Lear you see a court jester who says the truth, and whose status as an official fool allows him to do so. To invalidate someone's opinion on politics based on their profession, considering that common men can and do become politicians, is silly. To invalidate someone's opinion because they are proven wrong is not.

What the fuck is up with the "War on Christmas"? Do you people not have enough to do?
All this shit because someone takes offense to the phrase Happy Holidays! That is THE STUPIDEST FUCKING ARGUMENT IN THE WORLD. Seriously, it is.
Let us look at the word holiday.
[Middle English holidai, holy day, from Old English hālig dæg : hālig, holy; see holy + dæg, day; see day.]
Hmmmm...holy day. So all these holier than thou Christians are upset because we refer to the day of the birth of their savior as a holy day? Am I missing something here?
So you want it not to be a holy day but a day of tacky decorations and pagan tree worship?
This entire fucking thread is retarded. It's worse than retarded. It is the equivalent of a retarded person falling off a cliff and landing on their head. Even then, the level of stupidity is to close to call.

From: Kong Dassin Hmmm. Shoving a pagan holiday colonialized by Christians down our throats That's why, even though I'm a Christian, I don't much worry about the Christian holiday. Christ-Mass was created by the Catholic church in an attempt to co-opt the pagan celebrations of Winter Solstice. It's far more likely that Christ was born in the warm season (regardless of what you think about his divinity, there's no denying that the man lived), and I feel that it would be more appropriate to celebrate Christ-Mass sometime in the summer. Perhaps July.ou The first written description of Santa Claus was in 1823. Having said that, I think it's a little bit unfair of public entities to ban Nativity scenes, which are as much a part of the holiday now as Christmas trees or Santa Claus (Who is actually predated by the Christian celebration). Christmas itself was "born" in the 4'th century by Constantine. As to Ramadan or Hanukkah: the currently Federal holdiay is Christmas. If the holiday were Hanukkah or Ramadan, then you could make an argument that those symbols need to be recognized. However, the currently recognized holiday is Christmas, December 25.

What are the symbols that are recognized for Christmas? Is there a list somewhere? My head is about to explode! I celebrate Christmas by drinking lots of Jack Daniels and masturbating on pictures of men cut out from hardcore porn magazines. It's my own personal way of celebration the season. I wouldn't want a statue of that in a mall. From: someone As to Ramadan or Hanukkah: the currently Federal holdiay is Christmas. If the holiday were Hanukkah or Ramadan, then you could make an argument that those symbols need to be recognized. However, the currently recognized holiday is Christmas, December 25. So if it is already recognized as a holiday, why do you need another resoution passed to recognize the symbols of that holiday. That is a total waste of time. So Republicans like to convene to save vegetables and now convene to recognize little plastic baby Jesuses? That's just stupid. I haven't seen anything this stupid since the Star Search spokesmodel competition. It's a good think Jesus died so long ago. There wouldn't be any room for him on the cross today.
