From: Joy Honey You have to go back a bit further to Reagan to see who perfected the political sound bite... Well, yes, Reagan got the modern ball rolling, but Clinton - with the help of James Carville - further refined the art. The fact is, there have been soundbites since long before there was a broadcast medium to hear them on. Really, to debate who "perfected" or "invented" the soundbite is kinda pointless. My main point was that it's not really partisan; Clinton was very good at this, Bush Sr. was not so much, Reagan was, Bush Jr. is pretty good at it as well, when he sticks to actual words and sentences. Gore and Kerry seemed not to have learned even the basics, let alone mastered it. It's not a matter of the candidate, either, it's a matter of who's working for them and what their priorities are. Before Carville drilled it into him, Clinton was a master of the long speech more than the soudbite (remember those record-long State of the Unions?). In crowded primaries in both parties in 2008, whoever does the soundbite best may well have the edge.

Very good points. Thinking back to Clinton's campaigns, I can't recall any of his soundbites being as negative as in more recent candidates. I may have just blocked them out, though, and admittedly I didn't pay as much attention then as I do now. And no, it isn't just a Republican trick, and does cross party lines either way. John McCain ran a very clean campaign, even when Bush's toadies were attacking his adopted child, which obviously upset him very much. But we see which one was more affective, which is sad. From: Turbo Hand Not birthrate. Infant mortality rate you half-wit. Also, you brought up freedom, not me. 14 whole countries? Wow, you've pretty much seen the globe. Now take your smartass attitude and direct it elsewhere. I am finished with you troll. Actually by default your the one actually trolling here, and in your own thread. How quaint. Didn't anyone tell you that dropping down to the basest form of argument when debating politics in an online forum (i.e. the baseless attack) essentially nullifies any point you wish to make? The assumption that you somehow get to act like a complete and utter twat made later on in this thread just because "You created it" is also so far off track its not funny. As the OP you get to set the baseline subject (You chose politics in the US) after that the thread no longer in any way shape or form belongs to you, aside from your little part of it. If you don't like where the discussion goes and can't debate a point without acting like a 12 year old, then bow out of the thread. As a sidenote, this is why you don't discuss politics amongst friends, or even people you don't know. It always makes enemies.

I simply defended my position that the US has a high rate of infant mortality. I am sorry that Briana confused it with birthrate and then had to make a scene about it. As for you, you better watch it in my thread. I may have to...um...well, do something bad.

Read back, she never really made a scene, it was fairly obvious that her posts were a bit more light hearted, at best she missed the point but still stayed rather good natured. It was you that took it too far, but at least this last reply seems to show a bit more irreverence which shows you don't take yourself TOO seriously I can appreciate that =D

I also don't suffer fools. I mean really, do we need a "go ahead and name 5 things to backup your personal opinion" kind of crap. Then you name one and she called it "not responding" and "random synapses" all because she doesn'y understand the terminology. I sympathize on some levels because I'm not the smartest person in the world. I just have the good sense to make up for it by being gorgeous.

Since when did you become the spokesperson for the community? What you were being is rude & insulting, pretty simple. How unfortunate that your idea of discourse is...basically, name calling. Briana Dawson

Not to mention that you ignored the fact he DID answer your question and you either didn't understand it or else preteneded that you didn't. His biggest failing was falling for such an obvious troll.

From: Briana Dawson - Education: We can do better in this area and should work towards that.
- Healthcare: Other countries are taxed out the ass for state healthcare, I think the U.S. is fine.
- Election Fraud: ??? not worth responding
- Diplomacy: not worth responding
Environment: We ARE doing horrible in this area.
Infrastructure: ??? Get real, the U.S. has an excellent infrastructure compared to other countries.
So, no, your 'seven' is not sufficient. And still no other country offers the freedoms that the U.S. does.
Briana Dawson Jingoistic nonsense. Lots of other countries offer the freedoms that the U.S. does. Name a freedom the U.S. has that Canada doesn't. I can name one that Canada has that the U.S. doesn't. Does that make Canada more free? How about France? Can you name a freedom the U.S. has that the French don't enjoy? Germany? The U.K.? Iceland? There are dozens of countries that are as free as the U.S. It's not unpatriotic to say so either. Heck, there are a few countries that are more free than the U.S. And that's not unpatriotic to say either. Did you know that in the U.K. evidence gained from torture can never be used in court? In the U.S. it's illegal to torture a defendant, but the evidence gained from such torture is now legal to present in court. So name 3 freedoms that Americans enjoy that the English or French or Canadians don't. See, I've lowered the bar for you, not seven, not five, just three. Bet you can't.

Good to know that you are really just a troll. In the future I'll try to be less tolerent of your trolls, but I hate to condemn people for what could just be miscommunication.
