I saw this outside of Oakland the other day and my jaw dropped. Do you think this is our Kevn giving sermons?

Good luck, Kevn - but please remove me from your "To Convert" list - I don't need to be converted/saved/born again, thanks.

Do you people realize that viewing a picture can place a snooping program on your hard drive? I never understood why people would open themselves to such a threat.

Invest in some security, and turn pictures on in your forum settings, it makes life so much easier.

Some of us are intelligent enough to have protection on our system. I never understood how anyone could use the web without it.

Trust me, I could infect your system by you opening a picture I create. The code for the bug is hidden in the picture, completely undetectable by your "security". I would prove it to you, but it's illegal. But go right ahead and feel secure.

Funny, you feel so secure, yet MS is constantly plugging holes, and antivirus companies are adding definitions daily. People get infected all the time. In fact, I'll bet you are infected with some kind of worm, back door, or virus right now. You just don't know it.

You can't because Jesus protects my computer. You can't beat Jesus.

Hi There!

I've written software that profiles systems - specifically to 'know' when they do things that are out-of-the-ordinary; The software is pretty good, considering that it helped me catch and profile innumerable cracking scripts and a few active cracking attempts on the machines I watched over.

What Kevn is discussing is either a long-since-patched vulnerability in .WMF format handling, or a patched vulnerability in .JPG/JFIF decoding that /requires/ the person implementing the attack to know /precisely/ what build of what operating system the victim is running in order to accurately inject their malicious code onto the stack.

On most systems, it's not hard to actually know when your system has been hijacked. Hey, guess what? Your system suddenly runs slower, processes take longer, your system profile changes. You get weird network traffic that you didn't initiate. Even a worst-case scenario, of a root-kit encapsulating your operating system and bypassing the APIs, still won't escape the notice of a moderately-informed tinkerer with a IDS or even a connection log on their router.

Kevn can /try/ to take over my system(s) with a .jpg vulnerability - and I'll see him frog-marched out of court in handcuffs after he's slapped with jail time.

If there were currently a .jpg/.jfif or .gif handling vulnerability loose in the wild, y'all'd be hearing about it - security researchers are everywhere, with honeypots and flytrap machines everywhere, looking for nifty new exploits being tried.

Do you know how that works? my guess is a buffer overflow. Your probably right, on some computers it may work, but it depends on things. Most people run IE either because they like it or don't know better. (Im talking about version 5, etc).

I don't run IE, so theres one strike against that. And as far is you being able to enter the kernel code on my pc, good luck, I enable DEP(Data Ececution Protection) for kernel and apps.

If you did manage to inject the code into the browser theres still more protections, If you try to execute another program, inject code or send windows messages to other apps id be alerted and denied.

I also don't run in an administor account type, probably 99% of people do this either because they don't know better, or because its kind of a PITA. (windows vista will help greatly with this, admin account are not default, and is easier)

And finally you would'nt be able to communicate with my PC because I use a 2-way firewall. So again, it's kinda makes it all pointless if you can't steal passwords/data.
