Muslim Cartoon Protests -- Do they really think they're helping their cause?!

Ok, so now a few dozen people have died, embassies of countries who voiced that they were against the cartoons have now been torched, and people all over the world are being killed over a cartoon one newspaper in one country published.



Seriously, do the people committing these acts of murder really think they are doing something honorable and good, in the name of their religion?!

Mobs are always the worst people you can see of a group. Consider our onw little bit of mob ugliness after the hurricane...

And that being said, each and every member of a mob like that should be dealt with in as permanent a manner as possible at the time of the crime. Free speech does not include rioting.

It's just so pathetic. No good solution, and the only ones that would deal with situations like this are too harsh to stomach. You can't win.

I think there is a difference between a "mob" trying to find food to survive, and a mob of angry Muslims burning buildings and killing people over a cartoon.

For the record I think freedom of speech is in the right. I also support Irans hollocaust comic contest for the same reason

You see, the plight of those people had nothing to do with the snipers and people stealing tvs. It's kind of sad you would lump those people together with your post. Please to not demean the victims by placing them with the trash.

#1 What snipers? (the investigation of the 5 or so shot on the bridge is ongoing)

#2 Where do you think any Tvs that were stolen ended up? (hopefully the thieves ended up in the same place)

Okaaay... As far as I'm concerened, MOST of the news cannot be 'corroberated'. I was not there, I have no way to know who's telling the truth, I have no way to be sure that any story is not a case of 'wagging the dog'. No matter how many sources say it happened, I have no way to know if their telling the truth.

So your point is, nothing happened? That the entire event should not be considered since I can't prove it at the moment with my own eyes?

<sigh> And still you miss the point. You bloody well know I was not talking about the innocent victims (or not so innocent, as the case may be), I was talking about people who took ADVANTAGE of it to hurt others or commit senseless acts of evil.

You obviously missed the subtle point of the pictures. When the black person takes food, it was described as looting. However, the white people in the same situation were described as "finding" food in the grocery store. I don't know what exactly what it had to do with the topic at hand, but it is interesting to see it so blatantly.

Aaron, on the topic at hand, I definitely agree. The reaction is so far beyond belief. I don't even think the riots are about the cartoons anymore, and have nothing really to do with Islam. Unfortunately, there is a power keg of animosity with the West in those regions, and it's now on fire. I think you will see even more violence before this ends, which is a shame.

The most ridiculous headlines I have ever seen are headlines combining the words cartoon riots and death, as in CARTOON RIOTS LEAD TO 18 DEATHS. That is shameful, and pathetic. I don't care what the topic is, people are fighting over a cartoon. It's almost self-fulfilling. The cartoons portray some of the violence being associated with Islam, and the reaction is violence.

BTW, the ever impressive BBC News (which is so much better of a news site than any crap we have in the US) had a really interesting article on the background on all of this, and how it has built up to where it is now.

One last thing - on your signature, I have to ask - what is up with you? You seem to have completely gone off the deep end the past few days (starting with the Shame on you, Lash! thread). None of this stuff is worth taking so seriously that you are ranting and raving about it. Yeah people can be irritating, but it's not like any of this stuff really matters. Don't let it get to you. Back to the OP.

Mob mentality is bad whever it is. In the US and Europe you see this often at sporting events. I am always amazed when i see people rioting after winning.

I loved that they wanted to rename the danish in the same way we wanted to rename french fries.

Aaron has a point about topic derailment, and people going off on tangents just so they can push some kind of agenda, but... these forums really shouldn't be taken so seriously. YOU MUPPET!

I think there's a slightly positive and a negative effect resulting from the riot idiocy. For the better, it's getting people to talk about that region of the world and it's problems more. (Although I do wish that we could agree on some kind of actual solution, personally I think the solution is the promotion of democracy and human rights.) The negative effects are pretty obvious I guess.

But to determine if it's helping their "cause", we'd have to know what that cause is. I don't think they really have one.

I think what is being missed here is that it isn't just the cartoons that are the reasons for this. There is a long and complex history behind the distrust of the west. The cartoon incident is just the spark that ignited the kindling. Maybe it will go back to smoldering, maybe it will burn higher, but the truth is that it won't go away. The problem is to think that this is just about the cartoons.

Why are they directing anger at the US when we didn't print the damn pictures in the first place? I know they have burned down a Danish? embassy and an austrian one, but it seems like they are blaming america again.

But then again I am half asleep when I watch this stuff, or am reading forums so there *is* the possibility that I am missing important parts.

Even though our government, correct me if I'm wrong, sounded like it was critical of the published cartoons.

Of course, they justify it because of other things the US has done in the past. Which apparently = free pass to react any way they please.
