How to Deflame the Forums and Make Them FUN Again.

I recently saw a post in secondcitizen.com that was a really great idea. The poster seemed to think it would be an awesome idea if all us drama whores went over to their board where they have a DEDICATED forum for trolling (it's called "Under the Bridge ", in order to defuse tensions on the SL boards.

It's a win-win situation. We win because we can name names, be uncouth, and fill our insatiable need for schadenfreude. Linden Labs wins because newbies can hop on our forums and maybe actually find a pleasant and WELCOMING atmosphere instead of one of bitter hostility.

Think about it.... dedicated trolling forum. It's the holy land. Jihad.

It's more fun trolling in the face of authority. We are staying here.

There are at least three SL related non-Linden-run forums, the one mentioned at secondcitizen.com, plus forums.sldrama.com, and the one at forums.sluniverse.com.

Alternately, we can keep posting here, and still help out newbies with questions. This may, inadvertantly, let them realize that although we may have beefs with other posters, we aren't just all around shitheads who wish them i;ll straight out of the gate.

But, if you want to encourage the whole, "If you're mean to me, you must be a douchebag and eat newbies for breakfast." then by all means, start taking your drama to other forums.

After having read and participated in the SL forums (my first and only boards) for over a year, I would be saddened if the "trolls" left. There is, I think, a very fine line between "veteran forum poster" and "troll." I have seen very, very few trolls. I have seen many, many witty, clever, funny, irreverant, snarky, slightly obscene VFPs who, from time to time, like to vent--perhaps not fully understanding the impact of their words.



If "naming names, be[ing] uncouth, and . . . [indulging] schadenfreude" are the only goals of each and every forum participant, well, then, go for it--post where you like. If shaping SL *and* the wider world through discussion (albeit heated discussion at times) is your aim, please continue to post here.

As a noob, I learned so very much about SL on these boards. From the start, I was able to see through whatever seeming hostility or rancor was floating around in those days. I think most new folks can and do make the same distinctions.

Let me ask you this: where else can someone new to SL go to meet so many esteemed and experienced members?

The real reason I posted this thread was because the poster I misrepresented actually expressed the opposite and hoped that forum trolls would go back to SL forums rather than hang out at secondcitizen. They offered up screenshots of the SL forums before and after the migration to attack prok in secondcitizen as proof of the negative vibe that these posters take with them (the SL forums got a lot less paranoid when everyone was attacking prok, or so the poster would have us believe).

I hoped that by misrepresenting them I would be able to see a hectoring supernova over there, but no... everyone has to make sense of things and get all serious. Sigh.

You add puppies? I see where your going with this thought, but I've come to understand that puppies are not flame-resistant. I hope you don't try test that, either.

Yes, what the poster of that thread didn't like was the fact that they could no longer just openly bash people in those forums, and not have the people being bashed respond. They enjoyed a quiet period where they could say whatever they wanted about anyone, and got no push back. As soon as people started coming by and posting, and responding to the crap being said, then they cried foul about their poor little forum. All along, it was just a calculated attempt to try to drive traffic and put a forum on the map. Now it has become polluted with Prokofy, so it is a clusterfuck yet again. Whee.

These forums have been deflamed because many people are bored, and also sick of the heavy hand of overzealous moderators and faux-moderators. A dedicated rants forum is not some ingenious device - SLU's forums has had one for several years, originally to replace the one that was taken away from here.
