Kansas Board Adopts Intelligent Design

Never underestimate the power of euphemistic labeling.

TOPEKA, Kan. - Risking the kind of nationwide ridicule it faced six years ago, the Kansas Board of Education approved new public-school science standards Tuesday that cast doubt on the theory of evolution.

The 6-4 vote was a victory for “intelligent design” advocates who helped draft the standards. Intelligent design holds that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power.

Critics of the new language charged that it was an attempt to inject God and creationism into public schools, in violation of the constitutional ban on state establishment of religion. All six of those who voted for the new standards were Republicans. Two Republicans and two Democrats voted no.

“This is a sad day. We’re becoming a laughingstock of not only the nation, but of the world, and I hate that,” said board member Janet Waugh, a Kansas City Democrat.

Uggggggggggh! :(

Ok, religion is science now. They better teach the proofs of every other religion as well. I have Muslim friend who likes to list off lots of scientific evidence for his religion. When will he get equal representation.

Also, we need a new name for science now. It apparently has been taken over by religion. What class do we learn about objective reasoning now? I vote we call it more likely truth class. :D

One, the ID case in Pennsylvania is likely headed for the Supreme Court. Even Justice Scalia is suspicious of attempts to teach religion as science - and has publicly supported a call to interpret such cases in the following two ways:

Does ID conflate uncertainty with error?

Can ID offer a credible scientific explanation of how the "Intervening Agent" from outside the closed system of the universe interacts with nature? It cannot, justices on both sides of Edwards v. Aguillard (1987) asserted, simply posit an intervention.

Thus far, there is no evidence that ID's criticisms of evolution and cosmology rest on anything firmer than the existence of scientific uncertainty in limited areas. And there has been no credible scientific evidence offered which defines the intervention and describes its relation to the cosmological order.

Hence the Kansas action will likely be a temporary one.

Two, Kansas science teachers have already promised to teach ID in science classes as a counter-example of science - in other words, an example of opinion masquerading as science. In this way, they hope to use ID in a positive way to further student education, and analytical skills. Not surprisingly, the Kansas board's decision was badly-conceived and incompetently-stated - and in spite of its intent, will likely allow science teachers a measure of professional latitude in how they handle it in the classroom. On the other hand, how much latitude they have will probably depend on the will or whim of the local community and school board.

Finally, it's worth noting that the most powerful and sophisticated civilization in the world between 900 AD and 1300 AD was Islam - which stretched from Spain to Indonesia. Underlying Muslim domination was a relatively tolerant and open system of natural inquiry and exploration, based on philosophical and scientific concepts and practises the Muslims borrowed from the Greeks and Romans. These concepts and practises the Muslims further developed into something approaching modern scientific methods - and later passed them on to the Europeans.

Islamic domination began to unravel in the 1300's after a series of religious "reforms" destroyed this open system and replaced it with religious ritual and dogma - which drove scholars, artists, and scientists "underground". Military power, commerce, technology, quality of life, and many other factors suffered. In the 1500's the Europeans were on the ascendant, and had broken Muslim economic power in the Mediterranean, and Muslim military power in battle at Lepanto. Muslims were unable to resist the Europeans in a meaningful way until the late twentieth century, when some states - using oil as leverage - borrowed back some of the cultural features, sciences, etc., that they had gifted to the West centuries before.

Fair warning. :)

Well, I think Kansas has told us that there exists at least one thing in the universe too simple to have needed an intelligent designer. :p

If anybody wants a copy of my FSM sign with particle parmesan blessings, toss me an IM in-world.

I'll also add it to my SLExchange items (as a freebie) if SL comes back up anytime soon. Otherwise, it'll be after this morning's grid update is done.

How much would you pay for this amazing Flying Spaghetti Monster Sign/Altar/Love doll/Iconographic Representation?

L$10000?

L$5000?

But wait, there's more!

The all-new, never-before-seen (except on my land and also in the picture earlier in this thread) Heterodyne Creations' Flying Spaghetti Monster also comes with the unique FSM necklace (as demanded by our many, many fans and customers [i.e., Eggy Lippman plus several people that I totally made up]) ... with special bonus Oversizedness!

NOW how much would you pay? $L2500? $L750?

What if we threw in the spectacular WWFSMD? texture (snagged from Venganza.org for use on my Terra Airship ad panel) AT NO EXTRA CHARGE?!

$L250.1 and a plywood cube, you say?!

PUT. AWAY. THAT. CUBE!

No, my friends! Fear not that we will asymtopically approach free without ever actually reaching it! All this and more (i.e., the Give all contents script and a bonus container cube) can be yours for the low, low price of absolutely nothing!

Get in line at SLExchange now!

God, what an embarassment.

I think ID is a very neat idea.

BUT IT'S NOT SCIENCE

The arguments in favor of intelligent design pretty much ALL hinge on a complete failure to understand the laws of probability.

It's not really that much better...

For instance, France forced all of its schools to make quick decisions about kicking out students who openly demonstrated their Islamic faith.

Why did they have to make the decisions so fast?

They wanted to have the issue resolved before the upcoming school holiday... All Saint's Day.

I can't be the only one who notices the irony there.

Anyone who believes in Intelligent Design has obviously never suffered from the common cold.

Dear Kansas, get your shit together. Signed, the world.

My theory is that the universe is so f^@&ed up that no intelligence would take responsibilty for it.

Too much modern religion is a cop out for people who don't want to try to make life any better or take real responsibility for their actions, decisions and greed.
