That's lovely, but trying to do anything now is like trying to close the corral after the horses have already escaped. The American republic is compromised well beyond repair and was well before I was even born. I'd like to do something, and if I could do something, I would, but there just isn't anything left to do but try to ride out the coming days, survive somehow, and maybe help anyone in my immediate orbit I can help.

The problem is that I read a little too much. I understand that Bush is only a symptom of a much larger problem that will long outlive him, and I understand that the reality of what's going on is well beyond the average person's ability to ever likely grasp. There will be no revolt. "Vote the bastards out" is actually impossible. And the only thing that might make the police state fall apart is our running out of energy (which seems very possible, even likely, at this point), which isn't really any better at all.

The reality is that trying to fix the system is missing the point that the system is beyond repair, beyond even salvaging. Cling to it, and you're clinging to the Titanic. The only viable option is to start looking for lifeboats.

Bush does not forget Poland like Kerry did.

i guess i don't understand what you're talking about. there will always be a 'system' of some kind. just important to stay informed and make sure you recognize the signs.

maybe if history just seems like a muddled mess to you, i understand; but there is a pattern. it either spins positive or negative. i myself keep working on the positive spin.

I'm talking specifically about the current American one. I see a lot of well-meaning people who want to "reform" it, and to me, that looks like trying to "fix" the Titanic after striking the iceburg: very well-intentioned and very, very hopeless and ultimately counterproductive.

I don't know that that'll really be necessary. With such a sweeping dismantling of even our most basic rights, it's easy enough to just imprison any political enemies without giving any reasons at all, or perhaps while giving false reasons ("he/she is a known terrorist".

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we always continue to have "free speech" and be a "free country." If you get my meaning.

As far as this issue goes (they're also considering Czech Republic and Hungary), I say fine. They don't want us there, we shouldn't be there. We'll keep the millions of dollars we would pay in rent for the land, that our military would spend on the local economy, etc. These countries think if they keep their heads deep enough in the sand that nothing will happen to them. I honestly hope they don't learn just how wrong they are.
