A scientific report published in California last week claimed that dairy cows in the area were producing almost 20 pounds (in weight, that's almost 10 kg) of gas every year, each. That's a huge, huge amount.

It's been said that farm animals were the greatest contributors to methane gas that is depleting the ozone layer. Either that, of mexican food afficianados.

The ozone layer is being depleted by cow farts!...EAT MORE BEEF!, and hurry!!! Stop eating beef, and we won't need so many cows. Oh wait... then we could easily parlay the resources (vegetation, land, infrastructure, et cetera) used in the production of meat products to combat starvation around the rest of the world. That would be silly! Enjoy your Big Mac! _____________________

Jeez, why do people always get this one backwards? Ozone layer depletion and the greenhouse effect are different environmental problems.
Methane (cow farts) is a greenhouse gas, and is also implicated in increasing the amount of ozone in the lower atmosphere, where it is considered a pollutant. http://www.agu.org/sci_soc/prrl/prrl0231.html _____________________

The ozone layer is being depleted by cow farts!...EAT MORE BEEF!, and hurry!!! Yeah, I know this is a joke thread but.... Methane is a very strong greenhouse gas (about 20x more effiecient than carbon dioxide). The majority of tropospheric ozone formation occurs when nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as xylene, react in the atmosphere in the presence of sunlight. NOx and VOCs are called ozone precursors. Motor vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, and chemical solvents are the major antropogenic sources of these chemicals. Although these precursors often originate in urban areas, winds can carry NOx hundreds of kilometers, causing ozone formation to occur in less populated regions as well. Methane, a VOC whose atmosperic concentration has increased tremendously the last century, contributes to ozone formation but on a global scale rather than in local or regional photochemical smog episodes. Ozone in the troposphere is also a strong greenhouse gas. Tropospheric ozone is not "the ozone layer"; that is stratospheric ozone which exists higher in the atmosphere and is primarily created by solar UV radiation. The ozone layer can be depleted by free radical catalysts, including nitric oxide (NO), hydroxyl (OH), and atomic chlorine and bromine. EDIT: I took too long putting my post together, ananda beat me to it ![]() _____________________

I imagine that 6,000,000,000 humans must create quite a bit of methane each day. Does that mean we should crank up the soylent green factories?

Wow, that was quite an assumption on your part. I never said you couldn't have some kind of dead animal with each meal. In fact, I suggested just that, since soylent green is made from a dead animal. http://www.soylent-green.com/ |
