And you still live in the US... why exactly?

I can't speak for Dark, but in my case, I'm not letting the assholes have my country without saying something about it.

Texas is oft shamed for its bass ackward political ways, but I am soooo proud of my local congressman, Lloyd Doggett. This snippet is worth the three minutes:

What a brilliant and moving speech. Thank you so much for the link. Below is a transcript of its amazing last sixty seconds.
Authoritarianism is not born full bodied. It is conceived in small injustices, which tolerated over time become irreversible. Benjamin Franklin understood, when he said those who give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary saftey deserve neither their liberty nor their saftey.

This much is certain. Each day of this administration brings more news of deaths of true patriots abroad and more abuses of our values by those who claim to be patriots at home. This is an administration where the ends always seem to justify the means but their ends always seem to often betray our saftey and their means forsake our values. To those who promote this misguided act: pull down your false colors, raise the American flag of freedom, reject this bill.

The "Patriot" Act just passed the house. On Friday the filibuster starts in the Senate.
The House voted 251 to 174 yesterday to renew the USA Patriot Act, setting up a confrontation over the revised anti-terrorism measure with a group of Democratic and Republican senators who say it would not go far enough to protect civil liberties.

I blame those who voted for Republicans. Don't make the same mistake next election.

*sigh*

the lovely peple of dc have no senators, nor any representation in congress. i can however, walk across the street and heckle congressmen. although, while that might be fun, i'm not sure it would accomplish much. ;)

No doubt. That guy rocks, and I thought the following quote was awesome.

"Mr. Speaker, authoritarianism is not born full bodied. It is conceived in small injustices which tolerated over time become irreversible."

Brilliant.

Senate Blocks Extension of Patriot Act

The filibuster worked!
WASHINGTON - The Senate on Friday rejected attempts to reauthorize several provisions of the USA Patriot Act as infringing too much on Americans' privacy, dealing a major defeat to President Bush and Republican leaders. In a crucial vote Friday morning as Congress raced toward adjournment, the bill's Senate supporters were not able to garner the 60 votes necessary to overcome a threatened filibuster by Sens. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., and Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and their allies. The final vote was 52-47

Bush, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and GOP congressional leaders had lobbied fiercely to make most of the expiring Patriot Act provisions permanent, and add new safeguards and expiration dates to the two most controversial parts: roving wiretaps and secret warrants for books, records and other items from businesses, hospitals and organizations such as libraries.

It's weird. It's like someone flipped a switch and everyone's sanity returned. I'm not complaining though. :)

Doubtful. When have you ever known our government to act without ulterior motives? Most likely they all realized that their individual private scams and scandals would be open for attack from their rivals if the bloody thing passed.

I'm thinking it's a to divert our attention from this:

Bush Won't Discuss Report of NSA Spying

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051216/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_nsa_16;_ylt=AuuFwBddwSvLO2EFlQQ2BBrB4FkB;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

From: someone
Bush said in an interview that "we do not discuss ongoing intelligence operations to protect the country. And the reason why is that there's an enemy that lurks, that would like to know exactly what we're trying to do to stop them.

"I will make this point," Bush said. "That whatever I do to protect the American people — and I have an obligation to do so — that we will uphold the law, and decisions made are made understanding we have an obligation to protect the civil liberties of the American people."

The president spoke in an interview to be aired Friday evening on "The Newshour with Jim Lehrer."

Bush played down the importance of the eavesdropping story. "It's not the main story of the day," Bush told Lehrer. "The main story of the day is the Iraqi elections" for parliament which took place on Thursday.

Part of it, though there are mostly-honest and mostly-moral politicians in the Capitol... the system wouldn't work in even the half-assed way it does if not.

At the same time, even the honest ones have things to hide...
