What I found intriguing was that Nagin has conversations with God AND MLK.

I don't think that Nagin has ever had an unexpressed thought. He should really space out the time that he thinks about something and when he speaks out loud about it.

Still, I think Hillary might take the cake for foot in mouth for the last few days (the plantation analogy), excepting both sides of the Alito confirmation of course.

I am not an American and probably have no right to comment but this guy's comments make me sad.

In this day and age to be talking about "black" cities and "white" cities is just stupid IMO. Seems to me there will always be racism as long as people still feel they belong to seperate communities like that. How can you be upset when people do something to you as a racialy defined group, when you seperate yourself off as a racially defined group in the first place?

Rather than Neopolitan, I think we should all be coffee flavoured.

Maybe racism will only be over when we are all so racially and culturally mixed as to be some generic "coffee coloured" mixed breed creatures that look the same in Africa or China as they do in England or the US.

This is definitely a sad aspect of human nature. Victims of racism almost always end up being racist themselves. This is of course only my personal opinion but it seems that in the US blacks are actually far more racist than whites now. Look how many black only magazines, tv channels, awards shows, and on and on there are. I think when people start to behave in that manner they lose any right to complain about racism. They're doing more to perpetuate it than combat it.

Although predominantly African-American mags, tv, etc are very narrow in scope, the point for most of the US black population is that the majority of the cities ARE white, the majority of the tv IS white, etc.

While there is a degree of reverse racism, it is also extremely simple and a gross over generalization to say the "US blacks are actually far more racist than whites now".

That's why I went out of my way to say it was my personal opinion. I disagree with your first paragraph since it's not a reasonable justification for what amounts to racism. I once heard Spike Lee say that he didn't think it was possible for black's to be racist because they're a minority. I think it's one of the most idiotic points of view I've ever heard expressed. I've got nothing against having magazines and other media slanted to appeal to specific cultural tastes, but basing it soley on the color of skin is racism, no matter how you slice it. It's simply wrong headed.

Do you mean the African-American people living in gated communities and the ex-burbs? Do you not think that a proliferation of "black-only" media indicates a deep culture rift--that there are two cultures, one for each skin tone, as well as two economies? Nagin's comments are in line with Kayne West's "George Bush hates black people." I do not support what he said, but I am deeply concerned about the reason he said it.

I think that was true at one time but doesn't hold very much water today. As was mentioned earlier there's no White Entertainment Television. There's no Whitey Magazine, or the White Movie Awards, and so on, and if anyone tried to create such a thing the outrage would be deafening. There are just as many things in popular culture that have their origins in black culture that are embraced by people of all colors that there's no longer a justification for things like BET. I don't mean the content. I mean the labeling. If it wouldn't be culturally acceptable for white people to do or say, it's not acceptable for blacks either... that is if people actually want a colorblind world. You (the figurative you) can't decry racism out of one side of your mouth while promoting it out the other.
