Yea, it is a shame when you steal from people and they object to it. It's a shame when people encourage bootlegging until they make it big, then have a tantrum. It's especially amusing when their best stuff is from their bootleg days... since Metallica's recent stuff is such incredible crrrrrrrrrap. _____________________

It's their new anti-piracy tactic - make the music so crap nobody will want to download it in the first place. |

Last week I posted something on Blogspotting (Link ) that's been extended by this thread. Let me give you an example.
Let's say someone posts here on the SL Forum that they hate Metallica and download the band's music but don't pay for it (why they'd do that I don't know, but I've seen people post those kinds of comments before). Imagine someone like Turbo thinking "Fine, let's see how they like it turned around on them." How? Simple. That person either creates or consumes. If they create, it's easy enough to grab their stuff, copy it, and distribute it for free in ways the Lindens can't or won't deal with. If they're a consumer it's more interesting; like a reverse "six degrees of separation". Let's say they don't create anything, but have friends who do. Well, it's those friends who are targeted instead. Imagine how angry someone would be if the attitude of a "friend" affected their SL business. And when the freebies get released, it would explain this cause-effect chain quite clearly so that the person getting ripped off knows why and because of whom. Let's instead assume that this person consumes but has no friends who create (or none that are claimed). No problem. Anything they purchase becomes fair game. If they have a purchased skin, then that gets put in the Free Distribution Pipeline. The effect? Sellers will either not sell or will tie price to reputation. So if this person wants to buy a skin, instead of L$4000 it might be custom priced at ... L$1,000,000. Imagine a world where the things you want are tied to your personal behavior - the respect or lack of respect you afford those who either create or have a hand in bringing creations to the people. Fun stuff. I've been trading emails with some people on the net (mostly developer-types) about reputation systems (mostly wrt feed advertising using embedded reputation systems for both companies and bloggers). I think this idea is worth passing on as well. Not for now. But soon. So thank you again. And should anyone have an interest in starting up an SL Reputation Database system that functions based on this idea, feel free to use and extend this idea. I suspect we'll see something like this in the future so SL will just be a preview. For reference, people might want to take a look at this recent entry over on We Make Money Not Art (Link). |

Is that a bad thing? I didn't make the law. Stealing is wrong. What next? Will I be the Annoying Advocate Against Murder? Is it stealing if nothing is taken? Illegal distribution, perhaps, or unlicenced use of material. Not stealing. _____________________

Is it stealing if nothing is taken? Illegal distribution, perhaps, or unlicenced use of material. Not stealing. If you take something that doesn't belong to you without the consent of the owner it is stealing. If you cannot grasp this simple concept, then a logical conversation with you is pointless. |

I am comparing a crime to a crime. I believe you are showing a distinct lack of a grasp on what we call "scale". _____________________

There is no "scale" issue.
According to Lawrence Lessig (everyone here is a fan of Lawrence, right?) one of the overriding issues is letting the creator decide what's done with their creation. If you don't agree, then let's remove all the DRM in Second Life so that people can take what they want when they want without compensating the person who put the time and effort into creating it. Or if there is a scale issue, maybe a few successful SLers need to have their products distributed whether they like it or not. Perhaps we should list some resident names who have reached the Magic Scale Number and no longer deserve to control what they've created. I think that number should be 10. It's a nice number. We don't want anyone making any profit, right? Profit is bad. So, anyone who has sold more than 10 of something they've created needs to start giving their work away for free. If not, then the Defenders of the Magic Scale Number will appropriate it and release it themselves. Right? |
