It has long been considered racist to compare black people to apes. (Yes, I say black, because in my line of work I use the AP Style Guide and that's the preferred term. I find it no better or worse than African-American, just shorter.) If you don't believe that ape or monkey has had negative connotations, consider the rather extensive list of ethnic slurs on Wikipedia.

Did the poster mean to be racist? I don't know. If you recall my post, I didn't call them that. IIRC, I said, "This is OK?" Maybe the poster was from a country or place where that term has not been used in a racist context, I don't know. I do know, however, that I have heard more than a few people object to the term

If that person was aware that the term is emotionally charged and used it anyway, then I would say they are either flirting with racisim or just being extremely insensative in order to make a funny.

Comparing Bush to a chimp doesn't carry the same emotional baggage. I don't think it's a particularly poignant thing to do, however. Hey, we share 99.7 percent of or DNA with chimps. It's not too terribly hard to find pictures where any human being could be said to resemble a chimp in some way.

As for docotoring the photo, no, not racist. Unethical, yes. But then again, I'm speaking from a background in journalism that says docotoring a photo to create an effect like that is unethical. If you'll recall, when a magazine (I can't remember which) was caught doing that to her photo, it caused an uproar. If you're not in the same field, you may well not have the same standards on that topic.

Funny enough, I originally modified that photo for a discussion about that very subject in a forum--I think it was Time magazine, but don't quote me on that. They did an unsharp mask on her face and it made her eyes look like a zombie's eyes.

As far as the racism subject though--everyone is racist, classist (probably not a real word), and are judgmental on a plethora of levels. It's not possible to be completely non-judgmental. It's when people don't admit to their judgments and still act on their judgments (judgments based on incorrect assumptions or too little or incorrect information) that it becomes a problem. I personally think political correctness is silly, but it's something I must do to keep from getting chastised by society at large. I wish people could just be blunt about everything--people would learn when they're wrong a lot quicker.

I think that political correctness has been taken way too far, just as "business speak" has become too popular in the business world--"synergy", "methodology", "given an opportunity", ""optimizationalize", "onboarding", "Excremental", "movers and shakers" and all that sort of crap.

I think when people have to worry about pointing out the features on someone's face because it might be taken as something racist, it's political correctness gone too far.

Yeah, that was it. Thanks for the refresher, I forgot who'd done that.

100% agree, but that shouldn't keep us from trying to be as fair and as little hurtful (awkward phrase, but it's late. work with me... ) as possible. If I happen to know that someone is offended by a name or term, I'll go out of my way not to call them that. That's just plain old common courtesy.

Jesus, don't get me started. Anytime someone says "outside the box" I always wish they'd get back inside the box (hrm, slight double entendre there...). Matter of fact, we have a running gag at joke involving the word "synergy" that started when we heard our boss use it once with a straight face.

Excremental, though? I like that. Mind if I borrow it?

Eh, I don't know. If, for example, an Arab person had a face that reminded you of a camel, do you really think it'd be a good idea to tell them that? You may have meant nothing bad by it, but there sure would be a good chance of someone taking it as a hurtful comment. Again, common sense is a good guide.

My, what an interesting thread this had been! I suppose we've all learned something valuable, something lasting that we can take with us, today?

Nevermind. Here's a pic in keeping with the spirit of the thread:

I dont see racism here, I just see an insult.

So I wish people would stop twisting comments into racism.

If you said I looked like a polar bear, because (magically somehow) I became large and rather hairy. I wouldn't assume your giving me a racist comment because im white.

Sheesh..

Oh, and im neither big or that hairy, just to set the record straight..

I asked you before to point out to me where my views were racist. If you did that, I missed it among all the snarky remarks.

Speaking of projecting:

That goes for many forms of bigotry, ideological bigotry included.

Given that I grew up in the United States of America, I'm well aware of the fact that I'm racist. That awareness helps me fight that flaw. Are you aware that you were socialized as a racist like all Americans?

Eh, I'd say I was socialized in both directions. The messages aren't uniform. While society as a whole can be racist, I did have parents who did what they could to counteract it. Granted, two people can only do so much.

I like to tell people that "thinking" outside the box can be a bad thing, especially when cats do it.
