The animals that depend on instinct have an inherent knowledge of the laws of economics and of how to apply them; Man, with his powers of reason, has reduced economics to the level of a farce which is at once funnier and more tragic than Tobacco Road. -- James Thurber

From: Jasper Cult This may be a paraphrase and misattributed, but...
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." -- Abraham Lincoln It was Mark Twain that said it, not Lincoln. and now my contribution: The Three Basic Actions Action #1: A photon goes from place to place Action #2: An electron goes from place to place Action #3: an electron emits or absorbs a photon These three actions are the basis of ALL the phenomena of the physical world except the gravitational effect and radioactive phenomena, which involve nuclei shifting in their energy levels. EVERYTHING else in the physical world is based on these three simple actions. Richard P. Feynman (from his book QED: the strange theory of light and matter)

I've got a bunch of these collected on my website which I add to from time to time, but two of my favorites are: If you are flammable and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit. -Mitch Hedberg Hedberg used to tell a story around this in his stand-up routine and finished with "You can write that down, and put my name after it with a dash in front. That's what I want to be remembered as, a dash." When he died last year, this became one of my all-time favorites. This one I found more recently, but I think it speaks volumes about us. "It may be that we are puppets-puppets controlled by the strings of society. But at least we are puppets with perception, with awareness. And perhaps our awareness is the first step to our liberation." (1974) -Dr. Stanley Milgram

Three that I like: Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone. There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works. Don't worry; it only seems kinky the first time.

I recently attendened the funeral for one of my oldest friends father, this quote was one his father had on his desk,
"Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integegrity, they think of you."
and my personal philosopy
When in Danger, when in doubt, run in circles , scream and shout!

The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge...Daniel J. Boorstin
Our separation from each other is an optical illusion of consciousness - Albert Einstein
...for death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity - William Penn
I resisted posting to the religion thread...but this is my favourite Quaker story:
When William Penn was convinced of the principles of Friends, and became a frequent attendant at their meetings, he did not immediately relinquish his gay apparel; it is even said that he wore a sword, as was then customary among men of rank and fashion. Being one day in company with George Fox, he asked his advice concerning it, saying that he might, perhaps, appear singular among Friends, but his sword had once been the means of saving his life without injuring his antagonist, and moreover, that Christ had said, 'He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.' George Fox answered, 'I advise thee to wear it as long as thou canst.' Not long after this they met again, when William had no sword, and George said to him, 'William, where is thy sword?' 'Oh!' said he, 'I have taken thy advice; I wore it as long as I could.'
Samuel Janney, 1852
The meaning of the latter story is, to me, that everyone, anyone, should do what they think is right...and should leave others to find out what that is for themselves.... Cali

From: Troll Dougall "Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integegrity, they think of you." I've been a tad disappointed that not many people have followed Phoenix's example of posting something inspirational (although of course humor is valuable too). Troll, yours is my favorite so far.
