Godwin's law exists because many, many, many, /many/ ignorant people who are moved by emotion will compare someone/thing they do not like to Hitler, or the Nazis.
I speak and read German. I've read /Mein Kampf/ in the original German, I know exactly why the holocaust deniers are full of $817, and I have read and forgotten more about the Nazi war atrocities than most people in America have.
Comparing Pol Pot to Hitler is laughable. There are perhaps five other people in history in his class of mass-murdering psychopaths.
I find it terribly distressing that anyone could compare anyone alive today to Hitler.
However.
There are a few governments in existence today that I see moving down the same path that Post-Great-War Germany went down. Politicians and parties forming hard right-wing ideologies around the notion of a cultural heritage tied into their nationality and religion, multiple scapegoats of minorities, flaunting a disregard for the rule of law, and invading other countries to get resources while claiming that those other country's tin-pot statesmen are 'the most dangerous men alive' and 'cannot be allowed to stand in a free world'. Did I mention making deals with Christian sects to help get the power to get in office? Election corruption?
