According to the constitution of the United States, marriage is an union between an man and a woman...when Bush has it his way.

I don't know about other countries.

Wow--didn't even finish making the poll and there are responses already. Cool.

The question was how do YOU feel about it.

The real qustion is why should anyone think anything about it. What two people choose to do is no one's business.

hmm isn't this thread a tad redundant? Wasn't this covered in like 8 other threads?

I don't really care what label you slap on it as long as it is available to everyone.

It's never been covered in a decent poll with answers that cover virtually all sides. Most of the time it's expecting answers that say you're either for it or you're against it. This poll shows more than the feelings about gay marriage, it shows feelings on the sanctity of marriage itself and the government's role in it.

I feel disappointed in my fellow Americans for chasing this red herring in a time of ill fought war and rife corruption.

I agree with you that there are definitely more important things that could be talked about, but since this seems to be a hot-button issue with a lot of people, I thought it would be good to discuss it in terms that aren't so black & white.

Consensual adults should have the right of free contract regardless of gender.

I am also in favor of allowing legal recognition of polyamorous relationships between adults.

I think the government should stay completely out of the institution of marriage, and it should be replaced with civil unions for whoever wants them, straight people, gay people, polyamory, and anything else that might come up in the future, as long as it is between consenting adults.

This would basically make all current marriages be automatically converted to civil union status, and if people want to be "married", it would be left up to the church as a religious ceremony.

Hm. Not sure how I feel about that.

For example, my parents are atheist and were married by a judge. Where would an atheist couple go if they wanted to be "married" and not just have a civil contract? I personally don't know if they invest much in the the word "marriage" as such, but I can see how they might. It sure conjures up a lot of powerful images and feelings.

Since marriage wouldn't be a legal thing anymore, it would be simply a ceremony. If they had a civil union, they could choose to have whatever type of party or ceremony or celebration they choose, and could call it marriage if they wanted, or they could call it anything they want.

I've never been married, but I would not want to be married by a priest/reverend/pastor/whatever they're calling them these days.

God is a nice idea, but He (It? She? Thing? Nothing?) has nothing to do with my day-to-day routine and I spare very little thought for something(one?) so specific (can you guys tell I'm agnostic?).

I like the idea of civil unions, and I do want someone I care about to do the union-ing, but I'm not about to promise to obey my husband, and I am surely not going to bring God into my marriage vows. Sorry, God. Just seems like two people is enough for one marriage.

What the hell is not 'sanctity of marriage' about two people who love each other a lot getting married?

Why should one religion dictate what qualifies one for marriage?
Not everyone believes in the same religion.

Because, at least to my knowledge, a "marriage" was originally a religious concept. It is a religious tradition.

And not unique to one religion, so why (repeating myself) should a single religion (which has created huge wars in the past), dictate what qualifies one for marraige?

Marriage is a contract between two people living together. This is what marriage is from the law perspective. The law will look at you differently for some aspects as taxes etc....

This is the case in my country and does not matter if it man and woman man-man or woman-woman.

Religious marriage is the matter of each religion but it is a personal choice and a moral question of each religion. But what should be important is that the two things does not have nothing to do together. They are just different ans separate from each other.

Because the fundies will throw a fit unless they get to control that. It sucks, but it's the reality in the States.
