Coke or Pepsi
06-14-2006 06:26
I remember (A long time ago) of a chem lab experiment with coke and pepsi. We put out a coke and a pepsi bottle (Yes the glass ones- tells my age..lol) on the lab counter. We then dropped an eight penny spike into each bottle. The object was to see which drink ate away at the spike quicker. Coke won hands down.....just imagine what it does to your insides...lol.... For me it has to be PEPSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to be such a pepsi nut - had a wall of pepsi cans above the cupboards in my apartment long ago:

http://marcusmoreau.googlepages.com/pepsi-wall.jpg

And I also made a 3D can in Bryce & Photoshop:

http://marcusmoreau.googlepages.com/3Dpepsi.jpg

But, in the last 5 years or so, I have turned to Coke. I like how it is a little less sweet (to me, at least), especially out of the fountain. Of course I try to avoid both in favor of Sprite or Beer. :)

Hehe, too bad it's not true, I think.

Here's an experiment -- sorry, text is not english on the page, but you can see the pictures from day 1 to day 14. The nail won, it survived, while the cola even had mold/fungus eating it, lol

I'm not sure what kind of cola they experimented with...

Hehe, some more info:

Phoroshoric Acid - Fact or Fiction? The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It's pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days! Wow! Jared Brown from Richland, Washington wrote this letter concerning this "rumor"! "What you heard isn't true at all. I've been doing a science project on the effects of phoroshoric acid and I tried to dissolve egg's and nails, even a steak. Nothing was dissolved. I put a nail in a bowl of Coke and changed the coke everyday for 3 weeks. Nothing happened. The nail didn't flynch in size or weight. It just turned a really dark cool brown color."Aw oh Jared, Libby from West Frankfort IL doesn't agree with you! Libby writes; "I just read the Coke tips page and Jarred (sp) said Coke will not dissolve a nail. I have tried the same experiment and learned that if you want it to dissolve you must use an iron nail without a coating. Iron is very reactive with acids. Also, you need to put it in a 2 Liter bottle and reseal it because it is actually the carbonic acid (from the CO2 -carbon dioxide) that dissolves the nail not the phosphoric acid. If the Coke is open then the Carbon dioxide escapes and will not be as effective." Thanks for setting us straight Libby!

While I prefer Coke, lately I've had to go to diet drinks to cut down my sugar intake, and put bluntly, Diet Coke sucks big fat horsecock. Diet Pepsi isn't really all that special, but at least it tastes something like the non-diet version.

That said, sugar or not, for some foods Pepsi doesn't quite cut it, primarily ones with a tomato sauce component (spaghetti, pizza, etc).

I agree with Noh on the tomato sauce part.

For me it's Coke or Mountain Dew depending on my mood. There's just something amiss about the taste of Pepsi for me and that's in addition to it being too sweet. I'm just glad I don't have to discriminate with root beer.

If and when the time comes that I shouldn't take sugar, I will probably skip carbonated beverages wholesale, after all as a kid I hardly touched them so I suppose I'll survive without them. The bad taste of the diet/lite drinks are an incentive enough for me to skip them.

You might as well just open a packet of sugar and dump that down your throat!

I was amazed recently when I overheard my daughter telling her friends how bad ( substitute either brand ) is for their teeth and health. I'm not sure how long that will last, peer pressure at school is bound to wipe that memory, but at least it means she's understood the message for now.

But frankly I'd rather use a small amount of sugar than any of the carcinogenic substitutes. One should avoid "diet" drinks like the plague! There are plenty of other beverages with far less sugar, our favourite is an elderflower cordial which has sugar but nothing compared to the absurd levels in pepsi or coke.

This is quite apart from my aversion to the over aggressive marketing tactics of these corporate monsters. Especially in schools, that really should be illegal.

I can't stand Pepsi or Coke, but Cherry Pepsi or Cherry Coke both are alright. I prefer Dr Pepper over anything else

Coke.

But A&W, IBC, Jones, or several organic varients of rootbeer all win hands down, particularly for consumption with pizza.

That's fine if you can, but a lot of pizza places dont serve real beer. In fact, around here, none do.

Besides, beer-matching is as important as soda-matching... drinking the wrong type of beer with food is an abomination.

I've heard statements like this frequently, but never an explanation of "why". Is it artificial sweeteners? Or some other reason?

You're welcome :)

I thought perhaps you might be inviting some discussion while we await grid re-opening ...

It's typical of consumer society in general that the question of which tastes better is more important than than corporate behaviour.

Don't you find it amazing how a pair of fizzy drinks wield so much power and influence over our lives ?

Who remembers the incredible hysteria in the 80s when coke changed their formula ?

I saw a report that stated Coke, as sponsors of the world cup, even argued with FIFA about allowing them to sell milk! ( or “non-flavoured milk beverages” as they put it ).

If these companies had their way water would be bottled and addictive fizzy drinks would be pumped to our houses ;)

And just be thankful you don't have to drink this ...

bored ? me ?

I'm absolutely certain I used the word "carcinogenic " somewhere ;)

[edit]
yea it's not fully proven, but surely something tasting that plastic has to be bad for you !

Some artificial sweeteners are problematic if taken in large quantities.

As for me, I'll say that in addition to that, most artificial sweeteners taste atrocious when used in softdrinks because of the quantity used.

Most diet drinks also leave a horrid chemical aftertaste in the back of my mouth.

Anything sweet hitting your tongue triggers an insulin response as your body thinks it is about to get a big load of carbs. Unless you do get something to use the insulin (protein or low glycemic index carbs are best) you will crave carbs and most people's first choice is a refined wheat processed food. High carb low fat diets will just make you fat unless you restrict your caloric intake which is hard to do when you crave carbs all the time from an overload of insulin in your blood.

heh, I'm going to go on ...

we shouldn't forget where the name comes from...

Cocaine was an acceptable social drug when Coca-Cola was first invented.

Just imagine if it still was ! ...

Cocaine + caffeine + sugar, there'd be no stopping them !

We'd be living on a planet called Terra-Coca
:D
