It is fairly common in the English language for names to be deliberately given extra letters, or for letters to be changed to give a same or similar sounding name.

That being said, it happens in other languages as well. The name Natasha is a Russian name which is sometimes Nastasha. There are far too many examples for me to even really know where to start on variations of names.

Ok, now for the point. The name "Karsten" is not that from from the female name "Kirsten". It's merely one vowel different. Kirsten is also the name of a somewhat famous celebrity, Kirsten Dunst. Now, she has to be famous because I rarely ever know celebrity names, and her name popped into my head despite the fact that I have no idea what she looks like or what she does.

As for the name being in Ancient Greece as being a male name, so was Endymion. Yet, I knew a female on SWG who was named Endymion and named herself after the male character from Ancient Greek mythology.

Also, the name "George" is typically male, but in the Nancy Drew novels, one of Nancy Drew's girlfriends is named "George".

Almost all of the name databases I've looked at list Karsten as being a male greek name, but I did find one that claimed it was unisex. :p

Well it's a male name for sure but Greek?!? Where did you get that? It's a germanic form of Christian. Most Karstens hence live in Germany or one of the nearby countries with a germanic language. I doubt you'll find many Karstens in Greece though.

Edit:
Oh, and to me it sounds male but I'm culturally influenced. My native language is a germanic language and I've heard the name before.
