Thinking about this all day.. its a really difficult question seing that mood will effect what you find funny! heres my top 5!

1. Brasseye.. off the wall, completely off the wall. made by "media terrorist" Christopher Morris, for those that havent seen it its a british skit show in the form of a current affairs program that deals with the burning issues of our times (well 2000, 2001) the show hit the headlines after morris famously put forward 6 of the episodes for the rating board only to air 7.. the imfamous 2001 special.. on Paedophiles, a sometimes difficult watch, but always in my opinion cutting edge of comedy.. if you havent watched this series.. it comes recommended as fuck! you wont be the same again but dam you'll laugh :) on a side note you may know morrises work from this link :)
http://www.thesmokehammer.com/

2. South Park.. what show runs for as many seasons as this and only seems to get better? for people that never watched it, it may well appear to be a stupid childish cartoon on a bunch of kids.. far from it!! it deals with the real issues facing america in a way that makes you laugh.. and then on reflection cry! The fact that the makers are amazing song writers helps heaps too.. nearly every episode will leave you humming a new tune that's simply hilarity!

3. Holy Grail.. the film that will never get old, and no top list of comedy is any use without the pythons! yes.. this movie has been all but abliterated by years of Quoting.. but you cant take its shear genius away from it! for years my friends and I have debated this film. everyone in the film must be complete crackheads! I mean police intervene in there little war! they have no horses.. just coconuts.. its a funny thought alone that the whole film is infact set in the 70's and every person in it is just completely insane.. makes me chuckle ^.^

4. Spaced.. Im pretty sure this show is what made creator Simon Pegg think of "Shaun of the Dead", its exactly the same humour, Practically the same lead person.. but this show is a riot, cant say much about this show exept if you liked Shaun of the dead you'll die to watch this.. although 2 seasons were made.. the second season seems to be a watered down version of the amazing first season.. just watch it! class act!!

5. Simpsons anyone?.. ok YES.. the simpsons has gone shite, YES homer has been killed of and replaced by a really poor version of the man that was before him.. but, you cant take the sweetspot seasons away because of that.. if you want a really good example of the DVD's made availible of the simpsons get "sex lies and the simpsons" awesome handpicked episodes!

er.. this post got longer than a simple list I intended.. but I cant log into SL so I may as well have rambled ^.^

top 5 anyone? :D

Family Guy - Old family guy only, with a handful of the new episodes being exceptions. Before it's revival last year, Family Guy was a show that wasn't afraid to nail anyone. Conservative, liberal... If you acted stupidly, you got mocked. And the characters were unique... It wasn't like South Park where each character was basicly a sterotype of a common real-world personality.

Simpsons - I'm of the opinion that the new episodes aren't as bad as they used to be, but yes, they have gone downhill.

King of the Hill - Unlike Simpsons and Family Guy, I think the humor in King of the Hill is because it's so... real. You don't get fourth-wall breakings. The humor is more down to earth... You can sympathise with the characters frustrations and trials, while still laughing at it.

Beyond that... dunno. Most seem pretty uninspired to me. Comedy is not normally my thing.

Since these sorts of lists tend to be skewed to the recent past I'd like to offer up:

Shakespeare - Not just his comdies, but the trajedies and historical plays also have some great humor in them

Candide by Voltaire - I just love poking fun at philosophers

Buster Keaton - I got to see a few of his films in a theater with a live piano player. Within 5 mins of the start of the movie you forgot that there was no spoken dialogue. The whole place was full of laughter, something you don't get from most modern comedies.

The Marx Brothers early films - Honed by performances on the road their true comedic gems are shown up on the screen.

The "Who's on First" skit by Abbot and Costello - Most of their stuff was decidedly low brow. However, this skit stands the test of time and has been repeated and revamped by many since then.

Dr. Strangelove (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb) - nothing relieves the tension of the cold war better than laughing at the end of the world. Mr. President, we can not allow a mine-shaft gap!

Darn it, I did 6 too.

I'll agree with you on Jim Carey or Adam Sandler... although for some reason I found Liar Liar hillarious... And old family guy was good, new pretty much blows.

American Dad... had at least one good episode, the one that Patrick Stewart guest-starred on. I was laughing my ass off the entire episode. But mostly it seemed very dumb, I'll agree.

Well I was possibly too strident with my opinions as I (occaisionaly  ), am.

There is the occaisional Adam Sandler movie I actually like (the Wedding Singer comes to mind), and I *have* laughed at South Park once or twice.

The big difference in my two lists is intelligent "clever" humour vs. dumbass/juvenile/mean jokes at other peoples expense. For that reason I used to say that I only like the dog and the baby on the family guy and they are the best part of it IMO.

The other day I caught one where that was so offensively violently not true (that the baby and the dog are the intelligent part), that I seriously question why I ever gave the series a "pass" in the first place. Since I only watch perhaps an hour of TV a day and dont have cable though, my opinions are probably way out of step with most.

Will I get yelled at if I say I can't stand family guy?

Anyway, how has no one mentioned Friends?!!?

Certain episodes really crack me up (Holiday Armordillo, The one where Ross breaks his thumb).

So...

1. Friends

2: Simpsons

3: Monty Python

4: Black Books

5: Any Eddie Izzard stand up..

how could i miss red drawf (after seeing every show and loadsa behind the scenes stuff)? and blackadder or eddie izzard (the only person i know to keep the same joke running thru the entire set and other jokes - slowly combing them all together)?

and how could any1 vote the office as a best of all time? slow, dumb and boring - its candid camera with fake people

i havent included modern shows like malcom in the middle and little britain - malcom is showing its long term greatness but little britain may be a thing of its time and tends to stick to the same jokes week in and out - althou extremly funny they are now whatwould it be in 5-10 years?

oh and also i almost forgot

the league of gentlemen - excellence

5 isnt enough
