Hi Kris,

I have read about your troubles with the functioning of SL on your computer for a good while now. If I understand correctly you had severe trouble with the program while you made the impressive Heaven and Hell build. I can't imagine me producing something that involved with a constantly malfunctioning program.

I am just wondering if you ever had a chance to use someone else's computer on your internet connection and if so how it did. Likewise I wonder if you ever packed up your system and tried it through a different internet provider and if so how that worked.

I've poken to several people, and it seems that it's not uncommon amongst Brits.... Something is happening between LL and the UK...
Would you believe that with an almost 3GHz PC I rarely get above 1 FPS?

Dear SuezanneC,

Thank you for your concern. But no. Not the case.

My problems really only started in 1.5, and were reasonably minor. True I had some persistent and quite unique bugs, but nothing that couldn't be gotten around. For the most part, SL was just fine and dandy, save for the same sort of stuff everyone else regularly experienced. I spent many, many hours a day here and a lot of money to do so.

Then came 1.6. And with it, the complete destruction of my ability to play. Overnight. I won't bore you with the details too much. You've apparently heard enough about them. ;)

But suffice it to say many of the problems I reported stumped the Lindens on the occasions they responded.

I play SL variously on any one of my 3 pc's. Two of which are extremely high spec machines. I play from a 10 mb/s connection.

I have played from other people's pc's at other people's houses on different ISPs. I've played at other people's houses on my pc's.

About the only thing I haven't tried flying across the ocean to see if it's anything to do with my being in the UK;)

I have played on alt accounts. I have played on other people's alt accounts. I pretty much have it nailed down; I know what is unique to the Kris Ritter account. I know the odd few that are unique to a machine. What I can tell you is that my account is cursed. Fubared.

Yes. I could probably start my second life all over again with a new account. Of course, I dare not transfer anything because evidently a number of bugs are related to stuff I possess on that account. So I'd have to start afresh. And while I remain interested and even excited by many things about SL, I just haven't the heart. Or the money... since Kris probably holds over $1000USD in inventory. Or did. Before it all started disappearing. I don't want to erase two years of history and start again.

Sorry if I have bored you with my comments on the subject. I assume you know where the ignore button is? ;)

love,

Kris

Yeah Kris! :( I wish there was something I could--

Wait a sec. Why do I have this compulsion to give Kris all my money? O.O

The original poster meant to be snarky so Kris gave it right back. I thought the OP's statement about how could Kris possibly do some elaborate build while having supposed issues was pretty awful...

Have you tried it on a Mac?
Have you tried it using the switch that keeps the library from loading?

If you are talking about me having been snarky, then you misunderstood me completely. I said nothing snarky at all. Further I didn't see that Kris gave anything back. The reason I have read Kris's comments on her problems for a while is that I have been here for almost two years and I read the forums a lot. Kris had opportunity to make a lot of complaints because she had a lot of problems that were never resolved.

I was reminded about Kris's SL problems by a comment in a recent post, hence I tried to help.

I didn't describe her problems as "supposed". I wasn't sure to what extent SL had problems during the building of H&H.

How can you stand to use the program at all at 1 FPS?

Altho I haven't picked up any snarkiness in this thread, Willow is right, I meant just that the problems she was having were awful..

TY Willow :)

Have you tried it in a house?
Have you tried it with a mouse?
Have you tried it in a box?
Have you tried it with a fox?
Have you tried it in a car?
Have you tried it in a tree!

A train! A train!
A train! A train!
Have you tried it, on a train?

Say!
In the dark? Here in the dark!
Have you tried it, in the dark?

Have you tried it, in the rain?
Have you tried it, with a goat?
Have you tried it, on a boat?

It did not work, on a boat.
It did not work, with a goat.
It did not work in the rain.
It did not work on a train.
Not in the dark! Not in a tree!
Not in a car! You let me be!
It did not work in a box.
It did not work with a fox.
It did not work in a house.
It did not work with a mouse.
It did not work here or there.
It did not work ANYWHERE!

Not desperate enough to try it on a Mac ;)

Yeah. Tried stuff like that. But thats not going to solve a lot of stuff anyway.

Like, for example: The day 1.6 was deployed, a fair proportion of the prims (over 700) in my new Krittannia build (a waterworld kinda affair) suddenly developed a unique problem.... ANYONE... not just me.... right clicking and going into edit mode would crash to desktop. Philip Linden crashed three times trying it and not quite believing it. Kelly Linden crashed twice testing it. The problem is still the same in 1.7.2. If you want, I can send you a 'crash to desktop' prim right now (cool griefing tool!) :p

Added to which, all the textures reset scale. And any I tried to rescale would unlink from their set and become phantom. Basically, in trying to repair it, the whole build was destroyed.

That was about the time I gave up and sold the sim :)

Sometimes I can't!
But since I've tiered down to zero, and have a lifetime account, it costs me nothing. And fortunately, it's a lot better in 1.7.2.

Having said that... I was exaggurating... it does spend a lot of time at or below 1fpx, but it's not really "rarely over"... it's about 50% of the time that it gets unplayable.

Kris,

Pleae send me a "crash to desktop prim"...
Please include the texture you used on that prim inside, along with any scripts it may have...
For the safety of other users, please make sure that this prim and each resource inside it is "Edit/copy/no transfer"

If you have isolated the bug down to a given prim or class of prims, the job's almost done... let's drive it through, eh?
I am not saying that I would definitely do better than the Lindens, but I have 20 yrs of programming and bughunting experience under my belt and I love a good puzzle.
:)

Heh, I have a prim that made the client crash... It was some weirdass case of asset corruption. A landmark who thought he was an object, and could be rezzed. AFAIK LL fixed it by removing the damn thing from my inventory or the asset server or something... or it just disappeared on its own :P

Got Snark? (Sorry, I couldn't resist, I had heard talk of them in this thread but didn't see any so I thought I'd throw a snark in...)

Hearing these sort of things really frightens me. Talked to someone last week who lost a major portion of their inventory after 1.7 rolled out. But the problems Kris is explaining appear to go far beyond this, into the "The server they put your sim on was placed directly over the cursed indian burialground" sorta mojo. If I had these sort of long standing problems, I'd be pretty damned vocal about them myself. :(

SRSLY

If Kris would STOP trying to make content, and build fantastic stuff, and script and all kinds of clever shiznit, and just come and sit on my sex balls for a while, I am sure the issues she is experiencing will just melt away!

I've followed Kris' saga as well in that the inability of someone willing to pay $200 per month to provide high quality content is a loss. Being that her problems seem fairly unique to her avatar and location perhaps ll manpower might be better applied to addressing issues effecting a greater number of people. However, this is the point where LL could use some rethinking of their options regarding of customer service. Here you have a customer with a consistent track record of having paid top tier to create builds which enhanced many users experience. At this point, Kris should have been offered an incentive to start over and rebuild the 2 years of work which LL was unable to make playable. I think a few months of free tier would have been a reasonable inducement.
