Totally agree with buying the almost best you can. Built my PC nearly 4 years ago and it's still pissing on new PCs my friends buy.

I'm now wondering if it'd be possible to do some sort of benchmarking app for SL. Ideally, you could select it easily from Preferences (or perhaps an option to take the test before you ever join SL so you have accurate expectations) and it'd run through several scenes, not unlike the 3Dmark series, but with a specific emphasis towards how Second Life weights performance. Typically laggy scenarios would appear, followed by a texture loading test to really work your system, and perhaps some audio components too.

When finished, the test would churn out a requisite numerical score, and give you a Green, Yellow, or Red light depending on how well things went.

A main point of this test would be to expose any glaring weakness in an otherwise excellent computer setup. For example, I've seen some people on very fast AMD processors (like Adam's scenario) but crippled because of a very unstable, unreliable Internet connection. Or someone who has a good graphics card that's badly bottlenecked by a slower CPU.

One of the main obstacles to such a test, although I am sure there are other technical reasons, is how it would go about rendering these "scenes". Presumably, doing it within an actual region of the grid wouldn't be that accurate (imagine hundreds of potential new Resis all crowding on a few regions), and it couldn't be fully automated either. There's got to be a better way to do this.

That being said, it's nice that the first Basic account is free, so at least if things go badly, you didn't lose any money.

Im not a computer guru type of person and even I know that the computer specs posted by Lucas are not that good.

A person would get a better deal going to http://www.pricewatch.com and choosing the parts yourself.

Pretty cheeky to try and sell a computer with stolen software.

Office XP? Let's say at least $150.00, and that'd being generous.

Let's say $100 for XP Home.

Macromedia Studio MX? At least $800.00.

So that's $1,330.00 of software, even if you go with the lowest prices you can find. Care to explain?

Well, to give him credit -- It's Adobe 7.0; which is two versions out of date, and can be picked up 2nd hand pretty cheap.

XP-home via OEM can be bought for $50, now, Studio-MX - that /will/ set you back $600.00 at least. OfficeXP Home is availible OEM, but I dont have the current pricing on me, but usually budget manufacturers choose MS Works which is significantly cheaper.

But yes, the software side is probably a good deal bigger than I'd budget for a computer of that price range.

Excluding Windows, none of the software is the latest version. Though not certain, it's quite possible someone's trying to get rid of them to clear stock.

Yeah, that's a distinct possibility. Might have been wrong on the MX quote; but Macromedia and Adobe stuff still tend to remain highly priced after they have been made redundant by a newer version.

Quick check of eBay shows Studio MX going for about $250, Photoshop 7 about $100, Office XP about $100 and XP Home about $100.

That's $550. Either someone really wants to get rid of their old stock or that's a $100 computer.

I think I will stick with my dell(s) lol
my inspiron 8500 with 80gig harddrive 2ghz processor 1gig ram and Nvidia Geforce4 GO 64 meg runs SL really well (surprisingly enough LOL) and my new Dell Dimension 3ghz system also runs it well and I have 4 year complete care warrenties and accident coverage which means if for any reason ANY of it stops working it gets replaced
Dell has been great about upholding the warrenties.
on a small income even investing 600$ into a computer, i want a GOOD warrenty
oh not to mention legit software

..... WITH REAL licenses... heh

Medical advice might be good information but that doesn't make it concern the subject matter this forum is intended to discuss.

People who want to sell computers should post their thread in an advertising forum or in off topic.

Shooting the breeze about the computer dealer of your choice or the best system at the best price is not General forum material.

The reason we need the moderators is to actually perform the thread move.

The lack of care here is placing an ad in General and comments like yours.

Well, there have been threads before about what to get in regards to a new PC and having a decent SL experience.

Though at this point, the thread has been hijacked enough to make it qualify for Technical Issues rather than any of the Classifieds.

Huns, thanks for that note. I assume that's a full-size ATX mainboard however; I'm probably going to stick with microATX for the moment but getting a larger case such as the smaller version of the CM Centurion. And I'll need to factor in a new PSU since the Aria has its own due to semi-custom case.

My preference (as some heard me say in the past) would be to get a desktop running from one of Sun's new Sparc T1 chips (4-8 cores @ 76 watts anyone?). However I need to see if they have Solaris libraries available to deal with the Endian issue (you *can* run Linux apps in Sol10 now - at least for x86 - but dunno about SPARC).

I would like to have a group forum devoted to talking about computer hardware, with topics that would include what the best machines are, what the best deals are and where to get them, building your own on a budget versus buying a used machine on eBay, etc. - anything dealing with computers really.

I formed a group a while back called Computer Shoppers, which is about to die unless it gets some more members.

Here's the charter:

And I'll need to factor in a new PSU since the Aria has its own due to semi-custom case. My preference (as some heard me say in the past) would be to get a desktop running from one of Sun's new Sparc T1 chips (4-8 cores @ 76 watts anyone?). However I need to see if they have Solaris libraries available to deal with the Endian issue (you can run Linux apps in Sol10 now - at least for x86 - but dunno about SPARC). _____________________ Timothy S.
