I think that people who are offended by "Merry Christmas" should have to work on Christmas Day while all their co-workers are off.

Maybe people are just sick and tired of having cultural traditions they don't share crammed down their throats?

Wonderful op-ed piece in today's Washington Post about this issue that is well worth the read. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/09/AR2005120901395.html

What a load of total exaggeration! Name a private citizen who has been sued for saying Merry Christmas to another private citizen. Just one. Just one, teeny tiny one. Yes, Giving Trees are Christmas Trees. You can't dress up your religious icons to disguise them and get the public to pay for them. It's a basic violation of the separation of church and state, and it denigrates the religious nature of the symbol itself. What's next? Manger scenes with the wise men in funny hats? "It's the Three Stooges in a Barn, but it's for charity..."

I like it when people wish me "Merry Christmas." I say it right back, and mean it. And in my job, (UPS Driver) it happens many, many times a day. I don't want the government involved though. There's enough money out there to fund the absurd spending spree that takes place every December that could be used to put up private decorations. When a business puts up a sign that says "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas" I think it's nice. When a business runs an ad that says "Remember, Jesus is the reason for the season" I take note and don't shop there. If they're so ignorant to think that the winter solstice celebrations came about because of Jesus, I don't think they deserve my money.

If you note, I was ranting. When in the throes of ranting, I tend to over-exaggerate. :) If you further note, my main gripe was about "Merry Christmas" being "offensive." In my own opinion, the tree thing is silly. Most kids see it neither as a symbol of Christ nor understand it being a matter of separation of church and state.. most kids generally see these "icons" and think of Santa or presents. They really don't care what purpose is behind removal of trees - they just think some Grinch just stole Christmas...

By the way, the tree, along with many other things, was co-opted as a "Christian icon":

Christmas Trees

"Romans trimmed trees with trinkets and toys during the Saturnalia, and put candles on them to indicate the sun's return to earth."{15} "Druids honored Odin by tying golden apples and other offerings to tree branches."{16} In the eighth century, St. Boniface purportedly dedicated the fir tree to the Holy Child as a counter to the sacred oak of Odin. However, Martin Luther gets credit for the tree we are more familiar with."{17} The Germans placed fruit, gilded nuts, gingerbread, paper roses, and glass balls on their trees. The Poles placed stars and angels. The Czechs made ornaments of painted egg shells.
