Hmm, I'm torn between love and humor.

Truth I don't believe in. I think it died when God did.

Respect...

Acting with self-respect and respect for others encompass a lot of virtues

Pissing off both sides on an issue - by pointing out the problems with all of the arguments, introducing a third alternative, and refusing to allow myself to be "identified" with one or the other side.

That's freedom. Integrity. Honesty. Tolerance. Etc. ;)

:), Jake.

Empathy seems to me more like a gift, whereas compassion is something anybody can attain, with practice, if motivated.

Even though your message was not communicated in an objectively explicit manner, I understand. :p

The message I got was "wrap an unnamed book in an unnamed flag" followed by some vaguely childlike drawings of unnamed incendiary devices.

Mitakuye Oyasin

Lakota word that means "We are all related", and it means not only humans, but animals, birds, fish, plants, rocks, water...everything that has spirit or energy is related, and in being a good relative, you are recognizing not only your relationship with everything but also your responsibility to live as a good relative--to be compassionate, kind, honest, have respect, to have dignity, to try to always be in balance so that others can lean on you when they are not or so that others can learn from you, to take care of others, to take care of yourself, to take care of the earth, etc etc etc...it really encompasses it all for me and has so many levels to it.

Love is the answer. All you need is love. Love will keep us together. Love makes the world go round. Love covers a multitude of sins.

Also cheese. Cheese is good.

To me, lying is the worst possible thing a person can do.

Unless the question being asked is "do these pants make me look fat?" in which case lying is the only sensible thing to do ;)

Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard,
and mostly what I need from you.

this is a nice thread

i don't think there can be one triumphant virtue though... I put freedom high, but without other things raised here like compassion/tolerance it doesn't mean much

how about the word enlightenment? then we can all argue about how to define it :D

Well, I think I meant virtues we can cultivate in ourselves, rather than ones that can be cultivated as a society, like freedom.

yes, i guess at a basic level it is tolerance, respect, and compassion that can roll up to things like freedom... although "do unto others" may be a more fundamental root...

tangent: SL is an interesting example of enforced freedom, regardless of tolerance. Can I risk diverting the thread and ask if you think SL's high levels of freedom enhance the tolerance/compassion in our little world?
