"Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity. In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name." http://news.com.com/Create+an+e-annoyance%2C+go+to+jail/2010-1028_3-6022491.html?part=rss&tag=6022491&subj=newsYou have all annoyed me. Now I want names!

This makes me even more glad I live in the UK where this kind of governmental enforced idiocy hasn't reared it's ugly head... yet!

Don't they have someone who actually knows what they are doing read these things before they become law? Perhaps they deliberately intend for them to be ambiguous, gelatinous, mounds of crap so that things are so complex the average person cannot possibly begin to understand the law and then they [the politicians] are in a position to selectively enforce the law at will against anyone they so please. WTF. My name is Rose BTW and I know I'm friggin annoying. .

Gwyneth Llewelyn was telling us in the Neualtenburg forum, that citizens of Europe are allowed one alias under which to operate legally. The alias (or in our cases the avatar) is thus like a real person, allowed to sign contracts and so forth.

Last time I looked, British citizens were not expected to be subject to foreign law on the Internet. So I am still free to annoy you as much as I like under my pseudonym

Sure, it could be abused, but it was designed so that goofy crap like this could be vetoed without affecting the "must-pass" provisions of a bill. Oh, and if Jake gets to be Ulrika then I get to be Alby!

~Ulrika~ You can do this in the US. It's called dba (doing business as). Depending on your state laws, it can be fairly easy to set up. It's a bit like a business name.

Additionally, it has never been against the law to use an alias unless your intention was to commit fraud. I can call myself Surreal Farber in RL if I choose to. As far as this poorly thought out new law... someone will challenge it and the courts will decide.

The more I look at this law the more I think about how you cannot enforce it because in the end nobody cares unless you are very high-profile, this might be something to force ISP's to work with law-enforcement in the future.
I would compare this too trying to pass a law banning masturbation forever, how would you enforce a law like that? The truth is you can't, people will just keep masturbating, and some would do it twice as much just to make you mad.
I will not get into a political flame war, but King George also passed the Patriot Act and the Patriot Act II (the return!), so this fits his style I guess.

So now we're gonna have to worry about ...
01-09-2006 13:01
... anti-masturbatory laws, anti-sodomy laws, anti-this, anti-that?
My dad calls the United States "the land of NO", because of the signs posted everywhere telling folks what not to do, mostly common sense kinda stuff.
There are places all over the world that aren't cluttered up with laws and signs to let people know they should wash their hands, cross the street safely as well as a myriad list of other things. If you cross the street wrong and get hit, it's kinda a case of natural selection. If you're stupid you die.
Wish I still had my dual citizenship. Sorta.
Makes a girl wanna go out and find all the dumb laws on the books and go break them.
RL? My name is #$%^&*(.
That's with the accent on the ^, please get it right.
*rolls eyes skyward in anticipation of the aural torture about to ensue*
Oh, and the artist now and formerly called Prince? Copy cat!
Anyhow, having my real name, that's not nearly as powerful as having my IP as far as computer/internet stuff is concerned, or having my Social Security number in the case of nearly every kind of crime/harassment/tracking someone down.
You'd think they'd never heard of "whois" or a reverse phone directory.
Amateurs.
