Many Internet Explorer users will be experiencing crashes today. If for some reason you are using this browser, here is how to fix:

- Go into Control Panel
- Open Internet Options (if in XP's Category View, this is in Network & Internet Connections)
- Click the Programs tab
- Click on Manage Add-ons

Disable both the Yahoo Companion and the Yahoo Companion BHO. This will solve the problem.

Signed,

What if you don't use Yahoo crapware?

Wait, I don't even use Internet Exploder in the first place -- nevermind. :P

I never said it was IE. However, the Yahoo toolbar is causing IE to crash and burn as soon as there is an internet connection.

Use Firefox.

Warning, this is a rant, not meant to be aimed at anyone--so this is not flaming anyone in any way--it's just talking about issues I've had while fixing people's computers.

What's funny about all those TSR's (Terminate and Stay Resident), is that the people who use them often get offended when you suggest that those things are what's slowing down their computer. I've been doing computer repair for 6 years now, and there are so many of these little pieces of crap add-ons now that come pre-installed on major-brand machines (Dell, HP, etc..), and come with the drivers for devices, and come with messenger programs, the WORST culprit for this type of software is anything AOL related (and having actual AOL installed can bring one's computer to less than half its efficiency, and in some cases, if other addons are present, AOL can slow one's computer to an absolute crawl). I no longer choose to work on people's computers in their houses anymore because of this. It's just not worth the headache--people will swear up and down that those things aren't causing their slowdowns because, "It couldn't be those things, my computer came with those!" and "But AOL has built-in software to increase the speed of [place commercialized phrase here]--you just don't know what you're doing!" UGH! :)

I use Netscape 8.1.

Is that a bad thing?? I just like the tabbed browsing.

I must say, the newest version of Firefox, codenamed Minefield, has been my favorite browser. In addition to having the options of earlier versions, not having some of the bugs of earlier versions (cut&paste problems and the apostrophe key sometimes bringing up the find bar when in forms), I love the new option of having a spellchecker for forms.

Opera is truly great once you change some of the settings--go to tools, appearance, and in the new window click the toolbars tab, and check the "main bar" option (so you don't have to click the address bar first before you get the option to click the HOME option), and then also uncheck the "start bar" option (so when you click the address bar, it doesn't bring down a pop-down menu every time). This makes the browser much more usable. The page zoom options in Opera are GREAT, and it loads pages quicker than any browser I've used to date.

I'd have to say that between these two browsers, there's really no need to use IE again except for Windows Updates.

Here is how to fix:

- Go to Start -> Control Panel
- Go to Remove Installed Software (or however it is called in English)
- Look for Internet Explorer
- Notice how it isn't there
- Wonder for a few minutes why in hell Microsoft is forcing us to have this shit installed forever
- Anger phase
- Despair phase
- Realization phase: it won't go away. Your computer will be polluted with this crap as long as you use Windows
- Consider installing Linux
- Realization phase number 2: You'll never get the USB port to work
- Final phase: do as any sensible person in the world has already done and install Firefox (my website statistics tell me 17% of internet-using people are sensible, while the other 80% are either idiots -they LIKE internet explorer *gasp*- or clueless -they don't know better-)

wow, now when you browse porn sites there are no pop-ups!

:D

Let me see. Use bloatware programs that take up gobs and gobs of hard drive space and RAM in the place of smaller, more spartan programs to improve effeciency and reliability. Very good.

I can't wait for the next piece of geeky advice we'll here. "Honest! Hard drives work faster when you have a DeWalt Hammer Drill pounding away on their casings with a carbide drill! I've never had a problem with my PC after doing it!"

Kinda' reminds me of the old "Sledgehammer Fix All." You use a sledgehammer to fix it? You're guaranteed to never have problems with it again. :D

I'm afraid I don't understand this last message. Are you calling Firefox bloatware?

Had someone in another thread beg me to try Firefox...bet me his firstborn I would never go back to IE. So, I used Firefox for about a month...hated it, went back to IE. Why?

*Too damn slow starting up, I don't keep a browser open, I open it as needed. IE starts faster.

*Too damn slow on complex pages - I timed a couple friend's sites to make sure it was not my imagination, anywhere from 3-7 seconds longer.

*Site rendering issues...too many sites do not code straight HTML and looked funny in FF ( And I don't blame them for not coding for every possible broswer, IE is 80% of the market as you said, which tells me the HTML standard is outdated and IE is defacto standard now)

*Don't like the menu layouts (typical poorly thought out OS 'do it my way and that's different than every other prog').

*It crashed like hell out of my laptop but not the desktop. When it DID work on the laptop, made it seem like dialup. Tried multipe install / removes.

The guy can keep is kid, and his FireFox, I'll stick with what works best for me. The ONLY feature I sorta liked a in FF was tabbed browsing, and I get that in IE7. No real reason to switch since I don't buy into the 'I'm cool, cause I prefer MS alternatives' ideology.

Frankly, I don't have the problems you overblow above using MS...never had spyware and the first and ONLY virus I had was on W95...

Well, Maklin, to each his own. I suppose I'll have to classify you along with the people who use Opera. You know, "Weird" :D

(no offense meant, just kidding)

Oh, and Lupus, how far do you live from my city??? lol. My ADSL works with a USB Wi-Fi receiver, so I have to configure BOTH USB and a wireless connection every time I have to install Linux... That sucks.

Tried Opera once long ago, it actutally makes Firefox look good. Opera was a purely PAINFUL program to use. :)

Linux user too? Now THAT is weird! :) Actually, I have one server running Linux...the app it runs is far more stable on *nix than on the same app under windows (apparently the coders are NOT good at porting FROM linux to Windows, the *nix version being several upgrades ahead of the windows version). I detest the purpose of the GPL and OS movement, granted, but you have to use the best tool for the situation.

I would never ever recommend IE to anyone. The only reason it starts up faster is that some of its components are practically already running and that's part of the problem when you take a mediocre browser sharing integrated components with the most leaky and exploited OS in the world.

Even the less technically inclined can use Firefox, and it's worth the savings in ad/spyware troubleshooting. To those lucky few who haven't had such problems, I'd have to say that your browsing habits are blissfully atypical. Congratulations. Either that or you do have problems and you don't know it.

A shout out to the Linux users. I use FC5 for anything really important.
