I have never seen a Gideon, nor do I know anyone who has seen one. Do they even exist? Are they a small secular cult who have made up for a lack of manpower with a singular goal to stay in every motel room ever built? Are they a secret society of hotel maids? Are they members of the Masonic Lodge and get the books placed in every hotel room because they own the hotel companies? Are they a few rich individuals who pay hotel owners to place their books for them? Why don't we ever see people with armfuls of bibles going into hotels to distribute them?

I have seen a Gideon, in fact I've seen a few. It was around the beginning of the semester. They were distributing bibles on campus. One of those New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs deals. One of them, a middle aged man, offered me a bible. I took one, thanked the guy and left. All in all a pleasant experience.

Tell us your story. Was it in your hotel room? The first was at our church. He was totally out of place with his suite and tie, but most people are shocked when they come to our church (my mom almost left). We dress in shorts, jeans, sweats (our preacher had his normal Hawaiian shirt and shorts that day). He asked if anyone would like to donate their time distributing Bibles in our area. I live in a live entertainment destination, so there are a lot of hotel rooms to distribute to (about 18,000). The also offered our church Bibles for those that show up without one. The second was at a men's retreat. He was just there to fellowship with others. Both experiences were quite good. |
