It is now illegal to annoy someone on the internet without disclosing your real name.

Really.

It looks like when most of us were sleeping, Congress went and tacked this wording into a must-pass, unrelated bill to fund the Dept. of Justice. It prohibits anyone from using the Internet "without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy."

I thought this forum would be an appropriate place to post this. All you annoying posters better watch it!

How mildly annoying may I be without crossing the line into full-fledged liability? :D

Then you are excused from ever being annoying to anyone because you just can't help it. :D

hrm. That's one law I'm very happy that can not touch me. :p

Do you people have a protection against this? Called the first amendment? Welcome to the new world of censorship.

From a discussion on Boing Boing:

"The word "annoy" appears in *existing* legislation (Communications Act of 1934) and it does not include any communication a recipient might find annoying. Furthermore, the identity provision is not specified in the amendment discussed."

"The anonymous harassment provision ( Link ) is the old telephone-annoyance statute that has been on the books for decades. It was updated in the widely (and in many respects deservedly) ridiculed Communications Decency Act to include new technologies, and the cases make clear its applicability to Internet communications. ...In other words, the latest amendment, which supposedly adds Internet communications devices to the scope of the law, is meaningless surplusage."
