i have Vista RC1 and the release just before RC1 installed on a multiboot system and they both work fine for me (apart from a few gfx problems which is down to my beta driers for my card) I say make sure you have the lasest version of your drivers, make sure they are vista complatable, make sure the inbuild secruity is set to allow SL and its ports access to the net.

If you post back exatcly what error message you are getting (if any) I will have a look into it on my setup here.

also just out of interest, could you post a system spec, CPU/Speed, ram, GFX, sound card.
So far the only issues i have had with trying to get any program to run on vista is when the program tries and access's the kernel (which i dont thing SL does) and i have still found away to bypass the system inplace to stop you. I have to admit thou, the machine i have vista running on is a brand new built i made to test vista on (oh yeah and a massive HDD for *cough*downloading*cough*)

We've actually had some who've run SL on the RC1 beta just fine. We haven't done extensive testing because Vista isn't a final release, but I'll move this to Technical Issues so other Residents who are running SL on Vista can share with you how it's going.

Also feel free to search the forums, you'll come up with threads like this:

Also merging David Tengu's reply, thanx David!

I'm crashing on startup, too. I'm getting an error message that my graphic drivers have hung and restarted (!!!) and then SL crashes and sends a crash report.

I'm on an nVidia nForce 4 motherboard (MSI K8n Neo4-F, Athlon 3800)
GeForce 7600 GT video card
Vista RC1 32 bit (yes, the processor is a 64 bit CPU, but there are a lot of driver problems with 64 bit stuff, so I'm waiting until Vista goes final next year before installing the 64 bit version.)

I'm also having a lot of problems with my audio drivers. This new system that Windows set up to adjust the audio balance annoys me... there doesn't seem to be any way to get to the line-in and mic balance directly any more.

I'll keep testing and see what I come up with.

I've just installed Vista RC2, which has updated nvidia drivers (96.77), and now its impossible to start Second Life. I get the following error at startup (on both the 1.12.2.5 test grid and 1.12.1.12):

---------------------------
Unsupported video card
---------------------------
Your video card appears to be a GDI Generic, which Second Life does not support.

Second Life requires a video card with 32 Mb of memory or more, as well as
multitexture support. We explicitly support nVidia GeForce 2 or better,
and ATI Radeon 8500 or better.

If you own a supported card and continue to receive this message, try
updating to the latest video card drivers. Otherwise look in the
secondlife.com support section or e-mail technical support

You can try to run Second Life, but it will probably crash or run
very slowly. Try anyway?
---------------------------
Yes No
---------------------------

After pressing Yes:
---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
Second Life is unable to run because your video card drivers
are out of date or unsupported. Please make sure you have
the latest video card drivers installed.

If you continue to receive this message, contact customer service.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I have a GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB. I guess the drivers are getting worse, I had it working in the previous build :(

I'm running SL under Vista RC1 right now. (I have RC2, just need to upgrade to it.) But it does have its quirks.

1. AGP checkbox under Adv. Graphics must be unchecked.

2. SL will run with desktop composition turned on, but at a *halved* framerate because it is an OpenGL application running in a D3D environment. Best to turn it off.

3. I cannot however get SL to run Full Screen.

Everything else seems to work just fine.

This dosne't help when the viewer just does not launch, thus you cannot go into the prefrences, and make those changes.

I'm using an ATI 9600 just installed new drivers for Vista from ATI. The SL viewer just can't SEE what video card I have, or Vista is just reporting it wrong to it.

Isn't there a command line switch I can use for it to not do a hardware scan, and ignore it?

In fact WHY does SL have to do a hardware scan every time you run the viewer? It's not like people are changing and upgrading thier hardware every day. Wouldn't it be quicker if it just stored the hardware information somewhere so it didn't waste time scanning?

Quicktime
10-09-2006 16:18
I had problems with SL showing the loading bar after login, and then crashing. I then downloaded and installed the latest version of Quicktime, and I was able to enter the game.

I am now having problems with not being able to click HUD objects, as well as avatars being distorted. It is also very laggy.

ATI havent implemented OpenGL extensions in there Vista drivers yet, your not going to get SL to run until they do.

Since the Nvidia cards aren't working either, I would have to assume either a) You are wrong; or b) Nvidia hasn't implemented OpenGL extensions either; or c) Nvidia has a different problem that results in exactly the same error.

I installed and ran an OpenGL extensions viewer- it confirms that all I have installed is a GDI Generic (Microsoft) Open GL driver.

Nvidia has had OpenGL support on vista drivers since beta
Ati doesnt

Nvidia works on beta-rc1-rc2 for SL , if you get GDI , uninstall viddrivers (drivercleaner) , reinstall should work

-.o I can get GDI blabla on windowsxp not to hard to do, just randomly with SL.

Nvidia Version: 88.61 & 96.33
Includes OpenGL driver for compatibility testing.

Catalyst Beta Driver for Windows Vista RC1
beta1 driver with new control panel, zero openGL support

Cards i have that works in Vista&SL, since beta.
6800gt
7800gt
7900gt

Do i find Vista worth bothering with?, another topic :P

Look for Catalyst 6.8 (not newer ones) and install that one (set your Graphics to "VGA Standard" first)

After that SL works fine but you lose aero.
