I just build a pretty nice computer. AM2 4200+ Dual Core Processor on an ASUS board with a Gigabyte Geforce 7600GS and 2 GB of system memory. The hardware rocks. I had a beta version of Vista to install. Seems to work ok with basic surfing and stuff. However, secondlife won't run. I've installed it ok and it was a fast dl and installed in less than 15 secs.
Anyway, just curious if anyone else is doing anything like this. Oh yeah, got a Viewsonic 20.1" widescreen LCD. Awesome. I can't wait to check out some other games. Probably go ahead and install XP so I can see what SL looks like on this hardware. Got plenty of HDD's to play with.
Thanks for the feedback.

Hi,
I've been playing with vista for a few months in my spare time, on the login screen try going to preferences > adv. graphics and disable the enable agp option.

Disabling AGP was the only way I could startup the game on Vista RC1, but the performance is horrible. Is this a driver issue or an SL issue?

eh not diffrence for me fps wise still as sluggish on xp or vista, my pc has 4 gig ram tho. (x2-4800,4gig,7900gt) Vista needs 2-4gig ram , pref 4, if youre under 2 gig ram forget vista really. har har ill stick to xp for now, Vista has nothing new i need yet. dont say "its beta" heard that so so sooo many years, and when its released its still as crashy bloated and need serious updates asap

I have vista installed on my laptop and keep getting the message that Im using a generic video card and it cant run sl even thoiugh Im not (its an ati card with 128 mem) ran sl ok under windows xp. I was told it was atis driver that was the problem and would be ok when they released there Rc1 driver . They released it a few days ago and ive installed it and still get the message Using a generic video card! Anyone else using a ati card that can get sl to run using vista? If so how did you get it to work? From: Sean Matthews I just build a pretty nice computer. AM2 4200+ Dual Core Processor on an ASUS board with a Gigabyte Geforce 7600GS and 2 GB of system memory. "ATI is one of the first graphic providers to make a 32 and 64-bit driver that supports the Longhorn Display Driver Model (LDDM)" excuse me while i laugh at that statement Catalyst Beta Driver for Windows Vista RC1 *Catalyst Beta Driver and Catalyst Control Center for Vista RC1.* Still using old beta2 drivers ,wich definatly wont work with SL, only thing they updated was the control center, Sorry no go with those drivers they still havnt put in openGL support for it yet.
The following ATI features are not supported in the Catalyst® Vista RC1 driver for the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system: · CrossFire™ · Catalyst® Control Center Video aspect page · OpenGL
Gasp..ati slow with drivers? what a shock <rolleyes>

SL on Vista

Milo. I can't get to the login screen. SL reports Generic GDI and exits. On a desktop with RC1 and the latest Catalyst and a laptop with the latest NVidia RC1 drivers. TD

I'm running Vista RC1 (64 bit Ultimate) on a machine I scrapped together. Turion MT40 processor, on a Nvidia 6100 based motherboard with 1GB RAM. The intergrated 6100 GPU was useless for SL, so I got a GeForce 7300GS, 256MB. I got the generic video card warning at first, but a change in the BIOS settings fixed the problem, and SL works fine in Vista for me.

BF On the motherboard in question, there was a setting to change priority of the video adaptors. In my case, I had three choices: intergrated GPU, PCI and PCI-E. For some odd reason, the default setting was PCI. I changed it to PCI-E, and that fixed the problem. BTW, this setting was buried about 2 levels down in submenus, under "Intergrated Peripherals". I am also using the latest Nvidia beta 64 bit Vista drivers (as of last week).

I am currently using SL under Vista RC1. Just a couple points. 1. Yes, make sure the AGP checkbox is unchecked. 2. The current beta drivers from Nvidia are not complete. They have very poor performance because they are meant only for testing compatibility issues. In the release notes it pretty much states that they will suck for gaming. 3. SL is OpenGL which is not entirely emulated in Vista. If you have the AeroGlass interface running and are using an OpenGL application in a window, your framerates can be cut up to 50%. Running in Full Screen mode or disabling the fancy desktop will fix this (But half the fun of Vista is the cool desktop). I have also noticed that occlusion culling doesnt' seem to be working as it should. Unfortunately when I started using SL in Vista, a new version of SL came out so I'm not sure if the culling was broken, or if it's a Vista/Nvidia issue. (I also am stubborn enough to keep using SL in Windowed mode.)
