Ive read a lot about this over the last 6 hours, and decided i'd crack the problem, and i have!.
If your behind a restrictive internet connection such as a univercity/college network, you can now use SL if you follow my guide, but be warned it will cost you some money!.

1. Get an HTTP port tunneling service, i use "www.your-freedom.net" you will need to pay for this service to get the speed to use SL, it's not too expencive, i connect using port 23 (telnet port) it's never blocked, using HTTPS security.

2. Download SL, which i presure you've done.

3. Download a copy of ProxyCap, it works with SL.

4. Define your server and SL in Proxy cap.
the server will be, "Localhost, port: 1080 , support UDP connections (Proxy UDP)
on the rules menu, click for a new rule, select the following, New,
Rule type : Tunnel through proxy
Proxy : Localhost: 1080
Specify - click the button and click on the SL link on the desktop
Hit ok
5. re-start Proxycap
6. check the details are there, repeat process 4 until they stick.
7. run your freedom
8.Load SL
9.Connect
10. Enjoy!!

How well does this work, Timmy? Under this thread it was reported that this functionality was missing, it's allegedly just a "placeholder" for a future development (namely, when in-world HTML gets to be implemented).

I'm usually quite frustrated doing demos of SL in RL where due to being behind a firewall I'm never able to show people anything "live" — I do always bring as a backup lots of videos and images as well as PowerPoint/Keynote presentations, but the truth is, the impact will never be the same as a "real" connection to SL.

I have lots of remote servers where I can configure a SOCKS4/5 proxy, but so far, I was never able to get this functionality to work under SL, and residents always tell me that it is broken anyway. I wonder if that's not true anymore!

This is certainly a very interesting feature — if it works at all.

I have to note one additional step here: update.exe in the SL install directory must be added to Proxycap, using the same process for the actual SecondLife.exe included in the original instructions. Just repeat the step, and you should be all set.

And no, nothing has to be messed with regarding the proxy options within SL itself.

This process works perfectly, as I can connect through a connection allowing only open connections through port 80. Best of all, the connection is relatively fast if you go with the 4 MB pricing option (10 euro/mo).
