I am having what seems like a very bizarre problem. No matter where I go, weird textures from my vicinity get thrown up onto my avatar. I've attached some examples.
The first, badpic1, shows what I look like sometimes. In that instance I was trying to use the Appearance editor. The texture on my face (which has makeup on) is the texture that is supposed to be on my chest; the texture on my upper torso is from some nearby rocks, etc. In badpic2, I included the UI to show what I see in the Appearance editor. There's some textures from a nearby rug, etc. All these textures get bounced off me (including in the Appearance editor) at least once per second. It makes doing anything with my clothing pretty much useless because it happens almost every time I try to change clothes or edit my Appearance. I was able to get a good snapshot of what my shirt was supposed to look like, that's goodpic, but I can't edit the sleeves because the Appearance editor goes wacky on me!
If anybody has any ideas at all, that would be great. Is this related to 1.6? Is it related to the driver upgrade that I was told to do? (Intel Extreme on a Dell laptop with WinXP) Help! Thanks in advance.

Phew! That was a quick and simple fix thanks to Altruima and Blue Linden on Live Help. Blue said it might be a driver issue, so I rolled back to the previous drivers. Everything is fine now.
So if anybody else has this problem, check your drivers! If they aren't updated, go update them - and if you just did, like me, then revert back to the way they were!

I am having this same problem. But, as I am on a new computer, I don't have any old drivers to revert to. Is it possible to get older drivers? Any ideas?

My computer is fairly new also, but when I checked the drivers they were older than the computer. When I upgraded them, they went to drivers from about two weeks ago. Perhaps check the date on your drivers (done through the Device Manager) and if it is not very recent you could check the manufacturer's website for updated drivers?

I hate to bump an old thread, but this exact same problem is back! I have already tried clearing my texture cache, and it's still happening. When I clear the cache and log back in, I look fine. As soon as I change my clothes, though, the random textures start appearing again. As before, they are still from the objects near me. What's going on? This latest SL upgrade didn't ask me to update any drivers, so I don't think the solution I had last time is going to help. As I mentioned, I have already cleared my texture cache. I'd love to hear any suggestions, as this makes SL almost unplayable! Thanks!

What graphics hardware are you using? We support nVidia "GeForce" and ATI "Radeon" hardware. If you're using Intel Extreme graphics, there might be a problem. Try this link: http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechGraphicsCard

I actually saw this problem 'jump' computers. It's some bug when the client-engine renders the clothes and passes it back as a single asset. I didn't really do anything to 'fix' it. I just changed outfits and didn't change back for awhile.

Ah, my Dell laptop does indeed have an Intel graphics card. So even though everything has been fine up to now, I'm presumably not eligible for support. Ah well, I seem to have come to terms with the problem. Every time I change clothes, I have to endure a few moments of random textures on me until it settles down. If I zoom in or out on myself, I might get more random textures, but then it settles down again. So I'll just have to be patient!

From: Etoile Parvenu Ah, my Dell laptop does indeed have an Intel graphics card. So even though everything has been fine up to now, I'm presumably not eligible for support. Actually, the Lindens added support for Intel Extreme cards a few months back with 1.6. (See Vektor's post.) A mip-map is a reduced-detail version of a texture, appplied to objects in the distance, where higher detail would just be obscured. It's a way of saving rendering time, allowing for a higher framerate. So when you zoom in and out, are there three or four clear steps where everything changes from one bad texture to another? From your description, it sounds like the problem could be traced to mipmap generation. The SL developers were able to get Intel Extreme chips to work by disabling the OpenGL extension that handles automatic mip-map generation when using Intel Extreme graphics. They use another method instead. Now, how long has this been going on? When did this problem start? This is a long shot, and I'd like to see your av in-world to be sure, but after drivers, one common cause of texture corruption is overheating. As I notice you have a laptop, that might actually be part of the problem. Is it possible for you to prop up your laptop to try and get better airflow? Does the problem happen constantly when you're running SL, or does it take a while to start happening?

SL is too much for the Intel Extreme Graphics card. *cough*lucky to start a all, go back playing solitaire*cough*. I know, had to upgrade. I've had some problems where my pants would look like UI screenshots reflecting stuff around me, but I had this actually jump between machines and figured it was some server weirdness.

According to the About window of SL, I have an Intel 855GM. The problem started a day or two ago, when I made the required upgrade to 1.6.8 so I could log in. Absolutely nothing else on my computer has changed - I haven't even installed any new freeware or shareware or gotten a virus or anything. It was working fine, I downloaded the latest upgrade...and then it didn't work anymore.
I'm in-world now, but I'm not sure you'll be able to see anything. My clothing does finally appear properly after a while, but I suspect others only see me change the clothing to what I intended it to be, and don't go through the texture issues. (I must say, it looks really weird when the texture grabbed for a shirt is the one used to put makeup on my avatar's face.)
I doubt it's an issue with overheating; I do usually keep my laptop ventilated and the problem occurs as soon as I try to change clothing in SL, whether I logged in 30 seconds or three hours previously.
I suppose something I haven't tried yet (this time) is a driver update. I'm a bit leery of it considering that the last time I did that, I then had to roll back. But XP's System Restore is a marvelous thing, so maybe I'll give that a try.

Ahem. It's rather embarrassing to say this, but updating my drivers worked. The ones I am using now are from June 16th 2005 and everything looks just fine now. So...um... nevermind.
