I just joined Second Life this week and have been having problems using the Map (not the Mini Map, the large Map). Every time I click on the Map button, I get the dreaded "mangled network data" error. I just installed Second Life this week so I don't think a reinstall would fix the problem. I did clear my SL cache as well as the temp files on my PC. I'm on a broadband cable connection, running Windows XP Home (with all of the latest patches), my CPU is 2.66 GHz, I have 512 MB of RAM and plenty of free hard drive space. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct the problem?

Hey Dexter, I've heard of this problem before... I think it relates to the way the Map sends out some big packets, which results in the error you've gotten. I used to have a problem on an earlier SL Preview Grid where opening the map would disconnect me from the Internet. Are you on a router or is there anything else in between your cable modem and the wall jack?
Also have look at this and this, which isn't the same but it relates. Hope you'll be able to see the Map. ![]() _____________________

Thank you for the quick reply, Torley. My cable connection is 6000kbps down, 384kbps up. I took a quick look at the first link you mentioned but did not see the second until now. I am using the latest version of ZoneAlarm (a software firewall) on my PC as well as a hardware router. It could be possible that the Map is trying to send a fragmented or oversized packet and my router could be mistaking it as a possible attack, thus dropping the packet and giving me the "mangled network data" error message. I tried WinMTR and didn't notice any packet loss to SL.
Update: I don't know if anything has changed in the latest SL release, but I'm not getting the error any longer. I didn't change anything on my end, but I'm glad I can use the Map now. |

I used the WinMTR program to see if there is any packet loss between my connection and the SL servers (there is none). I also disabled ZoneAlarm and clicked on the Map button to see if that would help (it did not). Each time I click on the Map button or try to teleport anywhere using the Map, I still get the "mangled network data" error. Surely there must be a fix for this problem? Is there anyway to "break up" the data the Map sends so I don't receive the error? Are there any special debug settings I could use?
