Ok.. so for the last two days or so.. i have noticed a pattern.. as long i stand in one spot in a reasonably empty Sim i dont crash to desktop.. gee what fun..if i port, build, texture, open inventory.. you name it I am poofed!!

I have checked EVERYTHING...from swap space.. Making sure my lines are clean.. to defragging.. to checking for anything that may have changed. Uninstalled and reloaded sl

but honestly.. 29 crashes later i am ready to start hair pullling

FYI... thought i would be clever and try my other PC.. same deal..

I am truly at wits end.anyone have any ideas?

anguished Anthea...

Likely not the game, probably something to do with your network. You have a router? More than one computer on at the same time? Make any changes at all to your setup?

Have an ATI video card?

If you have an ATI then I've got an answer...

I've recently was experiencing a nasty crash problem that was related to my video drivers.
You need the latest drivers, unfortunatelly some computers (especially Laptops with Mibility
Radeon cards) don't work with the catalyst drivers on the ATI website. There is an alternate
third party driver set out on the web at:

www.omegadrivers.net/

These drivers are similar to the catalyst drivers and should get rid of nasty crash bugs.
Also they are specifically designed for gamers and feature some optimization over the
"stock" official drivers.

Actually what Anthea is experiencing is probably related to the com.dat file in her Second Life folders being corrupted (Something is corrupting them and we're not sure what, but the "Second Life crashed the last time around" loop she's seeing is a symptom of it.

The good news is it's easy to resolve.

Simply goto the Add/Remove Programs tool in your Windows Control Panel and uninstall Second Life.

Then goto https://secondlife.com/download and download and install a fresh version of Second Life.

Colin

P.S. Thusfar we haven't seen this issue on the Mac, but, if you ever need to uninstall Second Life from the Mac, the files are found at: Finder- Library-YourUserName- Application Support - Second Life.

Simply delete the contebts of the Second Life folder, download the latest .dmg file and install.

that path should be ~/library/application support/secondlife

(~ means your home folder so the full path would be <hard drive name>/users/<your username>/library/application support/secondlife)

Okay. I have reinstalled twice. Updated video drivers. Updated port forwarding on router. I crash at least every 10 mins. I crash when I type. I crash when I port. I crash doing nothing. This is starting to suck. I have a cable modem connection. Any help would be appreciated. This has been going on for a week.

Something else to try...

Pardon me if this has already been suggested... but read this currently in the Tech FAQs, helped my girlfriend in Second Life resolve lag and crash issues...

It more or less stated if you're having mass packet loss or performance issues, one thing it can relate to is you bandwidth slider in preferences under the "network" tab. More or less if you jack that up too high, (most would think it improves performance, I even did at one point and I'm a pro techie ROFL) it causes a bottleneck... it's telling Second Life, "oh yeah, I can handle that massive data stream", and if you don't have that large a download stream, you're SOL. My GF could barely move, she lowered the slider and kept applying, now SL runs like a charm/ Even though SL was running fine for me, I did the same just so there'd be no future problems, think I set it around 500. Also might not hurt to either increase or decrease disk space for cache under that same tab, think I set mine for 200mb since my C: drive is starting to get full and only hovers at about 500mb-1gb free.

I would like to gripe, and even ask, anybody else having problems uploading textures/images? Everytime I even try to select an image and click okay, SL crashes!!! And it's getting on my nerves! HeHeBLAH!

PS - another thing I've noticed, when it crashes, for whatever reason, IT DELETES THE FILE! So word of advice, make a BACKUP of anything you're trying to upload first!!!!! (Or rather it did the first time, second time the file seems to still be there... but still, ARGH!@#!) Something else that's interesting... after it crashes, it's not asking, "would you like to submit a report on this crash" like it usually does... !?!?!?!?

I've done the following:

flashed my BIOS (Asus K8V deluxe version 1007)
installed latest video drivers (Nvidia GeForce FX5900SE 66.93 drivers)
reinstalled 2nd life twice
set network setting to 250 (that should be BEYOND low enough)
set port forwarding for 12020-13050 UDP AND TCP to my IP (never needed this before)
updated firmware on router (Linksys BFSR41 version 1.46.02)
2nd Life has always run fine for me, I have made no changes prior to having problems, yet have been having MAJOR problems for over a week now.

edit: The crash message says "mangled network data or corrupt file"

Mangled Network data errors are a combination of two things:

1. A less than perfectly stable network connection (this isn't meant to be an insult or belittle the user's connection BTW, it's just that with the DS3 pipe we have in the office we haven't been able to reproduce this issue.)

2. An unknown combination of factors that choke out the connection (probably particles, some user settings and a few other things. It's not a simple repro case.)

To resolve it, simply goto your Second Life preferences at the login screen and change your login location from "Last Logged In" to "My Home." If you were already at your some goto Start - Run and in the run line type in secondlife://ahern/120/0/ then hit enter. Second Life will open as normal and just login. During the login process you will get an error message that says something to the effect of "Due to a problem your last login location isn't available ......" Click the OK button and you will be logged into the Ahern Welcome Area.
