I've just purchased a new laptop, "Toshiba Satellite P205-S6347." It's a window vista with a Intel Centrino Duo Graphics thing, and the laptop i supossed to be a great gaming laptop. I bought the thing for SecondLife, however, it does not logon correctly.

Once I type in my username and password, it does what it normally did on my computer, The loading bar went all the way and when the thing should have gone to the playing screen, the thing just shuts down and the SecondLife Crash Logger comes up asking if I want to report it crashing. Okay, I'm not to smart with computers, but this is really pissing me off. Do I need a new graphics card are what else could be wrong? I'd rather not waste anymore money on this piece of crap, and Im begging for help. Please someone help me, I spent 2000$ bucks on this computer! If anyone needs more info on my laptop, I'll be happy to help. PLEASE HELP ME!!!! :(

"Intel Centrino Duo Graphics thing"
"vista"
"great gaming laptop"

3 things already wrong there,
laptops are horrible for games
memory usually shared with vid card
Vista , you better have min 2gig ram on that O_o
Integrated graphic thing sounds like another intel vid card ~.~

check what system specs you have,

If you have either a ati vidcard or Intel one, youre pretty much screwed over, as neither of them will work well with SL

ati+vista = bad drivers
intel vid card = not supported

Well, that just brings my hopes up, thanks for the lovely comment. So, pretty much what your saying is that the 2000$ laptop i bought is a piece of shit and won't run SecondLife? Thats just wonderful. Does anyone have any helpful tips of what I should do?

Also, I have 144 gb left in this computer, so i think it could handle it. I have some friends online that play on a laptop, and it works perfectly fine, so I don't think your entirely right.

Intel Cards
08-14-2007 08:41
I bought a laptop specifically for SL too, but I should have researched more. SL is not compatible with Intel cards. Its not to say that they wont work.. but LL isnt going to make any effort to make them compatible with them. So...... you should have went with a desktop or a laptop with an ATI or Nvidea card. They do exist! I can only be on my laptop and in SL if I stay at my workshop. It simply cannot handle the graphics intensity of leaving my workshop in the sky. I know it sucks and it makes you want to scream, but you should have went with a desktop. :/

You spendt 2000$ on a laptop and it has a intel vid card, they so ripped you off O_o, laptops to costly compared to what you get -__-

If you have warranty on that (or return something i cant remember english on >.<;) ,id so return that and get a decent one with nvidia vid card , intel is useless for heavy rendering.

144gb doesnt have anything to do with ram, thats harddrive.

Good luck getting a intel vid card to work with SL, i know some managed it, it will be horrible slow and you will be shut out eventually , usually after something change and it will fail, i been seeing this for years on this forum now, not supported vid card = lottery

Instead of insulting the person, try being a little contructive. He needs help.

Problem is SL is NOT vist friendly ( let alone XP  for some ).

If you can return the lap top and see if you can it something more useable. I am sorry things have not worked out. But SL is is not that great of a User Interface as some games on the internet. Mainly we are outdated n many ways compared to others.

I think there is a way to get it running...
08-14-2007 22:44
Okay, listen, get this straight I was not ripped off. I got this at Best Buy and a dude from the geek squad said this was a awesome gaming laptop. I've been browsing the net for the past week and see that Secondlife never plans to ever support any Intel cards. (not support them, but they can still work.) Look, Is there a patch or anything I could download that would make this work? Can you tell me how some people got it to run at all? (even if it is bad?) I have a premium account, and I don't want it to go to waste. Nor do I want to delete it. SecondLife is a wonderful virtual world I enjoy alot and I would do anything to get it working. (except spend more money on a new laptop or PC.) According to some people like on the Secondlife Insider, some people with Intel cards have there computer running great with secondlife. I know theres got to be a way to get this working and i'll spend months finding out if nessecary. Even if there's nothing I can do about it, I'm sure Secondlife will do some sort of configuration or update of some sort to let Intel cards work on it. I also have no intension of turning this brand new laptop in for another on. It is NOT a piece of crap, and it runs as smooth as can be will everything else, (Games, Video, Media) and has lots of memory. I've owned it for a a few months and yet it has not frozen on me once. I download tons of stuff, and still the computer runs fast.

I am sorry but not all lap tops runs on sl. I am not trying to be mean but its a fact of life on SL. LLABS fails al the time fix people problems. I had UI problem that provent me from using my native font. Took then ages to fix it. I am very sorry if i could help I would. But since LLABs doesnt care about users playabilty and more caring about adding users this will continue.

ah sorry if i came out as rude,
thats just how my english tend to be , odd , wasnt ment to be.

If you could do this in windows, start / run , enter dxdiag, enter

It should show wich kind of vidcard you have on display , intel could be the motherboard and vid card could be a ati/nvidia.

Since someone recommended that for a gamer pc they would have picked one of those as onboard vid card for a laptop , since anyone who plays games know that a intel vid card is no good for that, if its a ati/nvidia theres a new vid card driver for that should be updated.

Took a quick check on web for - Toshiba Satellite P205-S6347 -
but this can be wrong sometimes, and it said;

Video Chipset:Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100
it does have 2 gig ram on it wich is very nice on a laptop,
probably why they recommended since it has vista.

If thats the one you have, you should smack whoever said thats a good vid card for gamer pc, pc is fine, that vid card is not for games.

There was a thread about someone who changed some settings and got into SL with a intel card, but its burried in forum cant find it, you get into login screen right?, go to preference, and set everything to lowest on
graphics,
graphic details
adv.graphics

Might get you logged on, for how long i wouldnt guess.

List of notebook/laptop vid card comparison
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
X3100 is on 66 place of 90

Okay's time for plan 2

Okay, I realise that the best buy dude must have been sniffing too much nose candy, and that he was completely wrong about the graphics accelarator. Anyways, Is there a way I can get a ATI card installed in my laptop without spending a fortune?

Unfortunatly thats the thing about laptops,
they cannot be upgraded , only ram/hd can be replaced
only way you get a new vid card is to get it returned & replaced with one that has it onboard.

There are external vid cards, but you dont want to know the price of those O_o alot..

But if you plan on using Vista i wouldnt advice getting a ati , nvidia is the way to go if you want vista/sl , ati need to catch up with their opengl as theres nothing but issues with vista/sl

Dearly Darling,

If your lap top is under 30 days out from the store you march that puppy back to the store and demand to see the manager. If the employees do not know how to match the product with the customer they have no business working there. I've even forced Dell to take back a printer when they sent one with a 8 x 11 scanner bed. (Dog pedigrees are very long). You can also contact your credit card company and have them charge back the amount if you used American Express...you may have to call your Visa issuer to see what your rights are about getting your money back while this is in dispute. I sure hope this helps.

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

goto the best buy u bought it from and see if they have Go series cards, i believe they are up to standards with the 7900 by now and you should be able to run sl perfectly fine off of one of those as long as u have a free expansio slot.

Soooo.. this knowledgeable Saleperson..... told you this laptop with a mighty Intel graphics chip, has now evolved into a gaming graphics chip.... and you believe them?

There are probably 100's of threads about Intel GC on these forums. They are NOT suitable for SL... SL is a openGL platform, not a DirectX platform... Intel GC do not support the OpenGL versions required for SL.

System Requirements states:- Unsupported GC = Intel.

Sorry Dude, no bad news is easy to swallow... but better that people don't try and 'comfort you' but give it to you straight.

I don't believe anyone is trying to attack you, or suggest the laptop is sh*t... but, if you don't read the system requirements stated by the creators of this platform, and take a hint from that.. you have only yourself to blame for listening to some salesperson on a commission who has never even heard of OpenGL.. then so be it.

You can play SL, but it will never make use of the other powerful elements of your system and therefore a reduced experience.

Don't shoot the messenger

I did, but my message was supposed to be for anyone who buys a system from some salesperson on a commission that tells them INTEL are great gaming chips, and doesnt even read the system requirements posted on the platform creators website... is only heading for trouble.

The same posts go on and on... so somehow that message hasn't gotten across.

Nothing personal.. :)

Expansion slot? , on a laptop ?, only ones i know of are external graphic card solutions, thats kinda pricey and clunky or pcmia & usb external ones wich isnt worth it.

They are bad, as a ok/good vid card would require gigabits bandwidth, wich they arent even close on either of usb/pcmia, compared to a real pci-e x16 expansion slot on a motherboard, but it still beats a intel onboard.

*Tull Kit ,
To little info there really cant guess unless you post pc specs if you ask a questions to see if it has anything thats not supported hardware/software or drivers out of date/wrong.

My first guess in a case like this would be outdated video drivers, but Tull told me in-world he is using the latest drivers. Anyone else has a guess?
