I'm extremely Angry, I'm just hoping that SecondLife will be able to support Windows Vista soon, because I have lost my patience! Because of this, i went back to a basic account, because i havent played in months since Vista came out! Seriously Lindens, PLEASE work harder so i can finally go back to SL!!

?!?!?

THere are probably hundreds of us using SL on Vista.

/If/ there is a support problem it's probably by the company that made your video card.

What is your computer setup?

Yes I agree it is more your PC than Vista. I have an hp desktop with Vista and no problems. I also run it on my Toshiba notebook with no issues and Vista. Originally they siad no Vista, then said limited... mostly over hardware. So yes it works with Vista.

<----- agrees with everyone else. Although most of the time I run sl on XP and my main computer, I use it on my vista laptop all the time without issues.

If you have an ATI card you are screwed as ATI and Vista are not happy campers with SL. SL uses a non Microsoft owned API called OpenGL instead of DirectX. Using OpenGL means Mac users and Linux users can play SL too where DirectX is PC only. Microsoft and ATI would like to see OpenGL die like O.J.'s career and had planned to completely drop support for it in Vista therefore OpenGL was not even considered relevant up until just before Vista was released when Microsoft realized they were cutting their own throat by driving customers away from Vista to XP, Mac and Linux so they could play the best games available like Doom3 and Quake so they changed their mind. Unfortunately this caught ATI flat footed and they have spent nearly a year trying to shoehorn in OpenGL support back into their drivers.

You should be bitching at Microsoft for make their crappy Vista software incompatible with prior versions. Its not an Sl problem.

Junk Vista and install Windows 2000 or XP instead and voila, it all works.

Perhaps more the real question is why doesn't Vista support SL or a lot of other software on the market?
Apple must be laughing their butts off...........
Yeah, we really do need non-retro compatible Operating Systems on a more regular basis.

Lets be fair, but the vista problem is far from LLABS not able to be half useable. IN RL havent you noticed that most appications are either not useable or are have problems? Its just a slow proces of how 3rd party makers of sofeware is adjusting to the change. LLABS grant you is sitting on their tails on this issue. But but so is most appication makers as well.

LL has nothing to do with th this.

SL works PERFECTLY on Vista. ASSUMING you have a video driver that isn't crap-ola.

Just like on Linux and even XP. The number of good video drivers on Vista is smaller yes, it's a newer OS. A lot of companies don't care about supporting older hardware on newer OSes.

This problem of driver support is CROSS PLATFORM and Apple has nothing to be "laughing" about as they have put users in this situation MANY times. In fact the newest version of OSX is purposley cutting off support of < 866 Mhz processors! Not just like running slow but refusing to even install because performance isn't up to Steves personal preference. Atleast vista installs and cuts down the fancy features automatically so that it runs!

phht whats vista without fancy features, thats right XP with (more of) a nag system. and less compatibility ;)

its a shame computer makers are still sticking ppl with that crap, eventho very soon the only vista that will exist will be home editions because no professional will touch it

its the windows ME of 2007 and its professional replacement is slated to begin public beta testing in late 2008

really its a expensive, annoying, confusing to your users pile of crap on a large scale

I am not a programmer. but The sl client is open source. whey isnt there a group of coders that can build us a directx client ? Its just my two cents but would that not be much better for the majority of SL (read windows) users ? I wish i was a good coder...

Actually I disagree with that. I use Radeon X1950 Pro with Vista 64-bit and as long as I keep Catalyst AI turned off, SL is stable and very rarely crashes.

Driver version I am using is 7.8

Probably for the same reason that LL droped DirectX sound in favor of the open source FMOD: because you either have to code to, and suffer from, Microsoft's flaky, complicated, poorly docucmented, and "my way or the highway" APIs, or actually get work done.

Asking a developer who is freely donating their labor to recode one of the better functioning bits of the client to DirectX is likely harder than persuading them to wallow in pig excrement.

Mine is running fine
09-30-2007 13:36
I am running it on a sony laptop with the 965 chip and Vista, and it runs fine once you hack the settings.xml file and add the line to stop occlusion. The change is listed on this forum somewhere, hold on

/111/98/201800/1.html

worked liek a charm. Before adding that line it would crash as soona s the opening window logged on. :)

Love my SL

I run SL fine on Vista, in fact, it runs better for me on Vista than it did on XP.

But right click on your SL icon on desktop on Vista, then go to "compatibility" and set to "Windows XP SP2" then check "disable visual themes" box. And run it in admin.

Should be fine then.
