While I probably would not recommend the X61 as a great Second Life platform, I have succeeded in making it work. The X61 uses the Intel GM965 chipset with the X3100 Graphics Media Accelerator. I am running 32-bit Vista and the latest Intel beta drivers (15.6b). The fix will require you to track down the settings.xml file and modify it. Although it is unlikely that you will do anything harmful to your computer or Vista, all of the usual do-so-at-your-own-risk warnings apply.
Out of the box, Second Life will allow you to log in but will crash immediately before displaying the world. The first problem is that the OpenGL driver claims to support object occlusion but it doesn't (at least, not properly). The trick is to turn off Object Occlusion.
Now we come to the second problem. Object Occlusion is an option in the Debug menus which you can't get to until you are in-world. Fortunately, this option is stored in the settings.xml file. Once Second Life has started it creates a settings.xml file in the \Users\<yourname>\AppData directory tree. In my case this is \Users\myname\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.xml. You will have to manually add the command to disable Object Occlusion to this file. The lines to add are:
<!--Enable object culling based on occlusion (coverage) by other objects--> <UseOcclusion value="FALSE"/>
Open settings.xml with notepad and paste the two lines into the <settings ...> section (somewhere after the second line but before the final </settings> line). Save the file and have fun running Second Life! By the way, there may be multiple directories under AppData. I have three: Local, LocalLow, and Roaming. My SecondLife directory is under Roaming since I am running on a wireless link. You may have to search a bit to find the directory which has the SecondLife subdirectory.

Nice job! I was wondering if I wasn't going to be able to play SL on my new tablet. Works like a charm.

Object Occlusion

OK. I just got a new X61, and have been searching far and wide for a solution to my SL crash problem. I found this thread, and am getting ready to try this work around. So you say it works? This fix is my last resort, because I'm afraid my draw distance will be shot if I do this. How does everything look for you? And your FPS? Any other settings you can recommend... for example, what about the OpenGL 3D settings? Currently I have the following settings:
Lenovo X61 Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family 7.14.10.1322 1400 by 1050 True Color (50 Hz)
3D Settings As currently set: Asynchronous Flip - Off Triple Buffering - Default Flipping Policy - Flip Depth Buffer Bit Depth - Default Force S3TC Texture Compression - Off Force FXT1 Texture Compression - Off Driver Memory Footprint - Normal Texture Color Depth - Desktop Color Depth Anisotropic Filtering - Application Control
Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Thank you so much. I have a HP 2710P tablet which has the same chipset. Second Life was "kinda working" on a Macbook that I have (running Vista of course) even though I've read that Intel GMA was a deal breaker. But now I'm back in action. I'm not expecting great performance or stability but it's nice to have access when I'm away from my desktop.
To the OP, if you use Outlook on your tablet, PM me and I'll give you a free copy of Tablet Enhancements for Outlook as a token of my gratitude.

Still crashing
12-07-2007 06:29
I thought inserting the indicated code into settings.xml would solve my problem as I'm using the Intel X3100 video card, but it still crashes at the same point - just as Second Life appears to finish loading.
Is there any other possible settings change that could make things right? Or any change to the OpenGL settings that might do it?
Thanks,
Jon

Its 99% of the time the gfx drivers doing it had same issues with T60 as your unable to use the latest gfx drivers from ati or what ever as it says go see your hardware manuf for updated drivers which they hardly ever do if they do its so far behind its not worth haviing however for ati users you can use this http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/works like a charm and your always uptodate

How to copy and paste? Google is our friend!

From: eemer Aeon i have no idea what you mean by copying pasting ect lol you should tell me what to do so i can understand im not really a computer whizz :/ Copy and Paste: -Using your mouse, place the cursor at the beginning of the text you want to copy so that you can highlight the text. Click and hold down the left mouse button and drag the cursor to the end of the text that you want to copy. This will highlight (darken) the text. -Click on the Copy icon (the two pieces of paper on the toolbar), or -Select Copy from the Edit Menu at the top of the page, or -Press and hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the C key at the same time. -To Paste a copy of the text into a new location, follow the Paste directions above. Good luck with that!
