I would be soooo grateful to anyone who could give me any suggestions about what this could be!!!
I've been playing SL for about a month on my 1mb broadband connection. Then one day everything just stopped running right. Stuff in world wont rezz for ages, half my inventory gone missing, no music, load of other problems bla bla bla. My computer was was a bit rubbish so I went and got a decent one with a pretty good 256mb Nvidia graphics card. But problem still not solved, so I upgraded to 2mb broadband. Still no luck, in world my bandwidth is super low and i'm getting massive packet loss. I thought that my ISP (tiscali) might be restricing the line or something and I've done lots of shouting down the phone at them. Anyway I've now run some tests on the line and my bandwidth seems to be pretty good (actually running about 997.2kilobits). Can anyone think of anything else that could be causing my problems?? I've tried fiddling with the settings in game everywhich way and turning off stuff like my firewall but nothing seems to help, help!!!!!
Any advice much apreciated!

Could you run a traceroute from where you are to lindenlab.com and then post the results here?

Could you give some more details of your computer. (From what she's said she's probably on the standard UK 2MB down/256K up ADSL)

http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlwinmtr.html Winmtr will help you produce a trace route.

How are you exactly connecting to the internet? Direct line from your computer or through a router? If your using a router SL may be using a port that the router doesnt like.

Otherwise the above suggestion will be your best action.

sorry forgot to put the detail of my pc. It's a Compaq Presario. Petium 4, 512 DDR-SDRAM, 160gbhard drive, NVIDIA 6200 Turbocache. Connecting to the internet through Tiscali 2mb broadband through Belkin modem (although the problem is the same if I conenct the tiscali modem too).

That trace you ran looks good. Were you running it while you had SL running? If not, I would suggest you have SL up while running it, otherwise, I see nothing wrong with it.

Well, just realized that what you captured with your traceroute information is a snapshot in time. That does not mean there is no problem. All it mean is that I could see no immediate problem with your network in that brief moment.

I'm new and SL seems to be running really slowly for me too. I'm sure my computer has adequate specs, and am on a 512k DSL connection. When I move somwhere it takes at least 10 minutes for everything to load to the point where I can really interact with it on a decent level. I had no idea if this is normal but I guessed not, so looking here, this is the first and only thread I see complaining of a similar problem. I see Titania's ISP is Tiscali, which is the ISP I use as well. Coincidence? Hmm...

hey,
08-04-2005 15:09
sorry - we've neglected being helpful!! :) there's lots of other threads out there also describing similar probs, but as far as i've been able to read, it's a bit difficult to nail down what is the central offending error - probably a combination of a few small things that add up. there's several things you can try - sounds like your netline checks out okay, and since it ran well to begin with, i'm assuming that's not the prob...

- Cienna Samiam: "I've found if you manually delete all files in the /cache directory before each session, you can usually extend the time you can stay connected. " - and also has been mentioned to clear up other slowdown probs... probably your best bet to getting back up to speed.
/164/42/55566/1.html

- could be a bad inventory item/script you picked up along the way (perhaps a script that keeps running needlessly?). tedious and onerous in that you usually need to delete items until the prob clears up... not sure if there's a better way somebody could suggest?

- Bull Zamboni: "Is anyone that is crashing trying to run Team Speak at the same time? Before the update I could use Team Speak all the time and run the game no problems. Ever since the update I cannot run Team Speak and SL at the same time. [...] Then I decided to not turn team speak on. I was able to stay online for like 4 hours straight no crashes." - i suppose not directly related to your slowdown prob, but if you use it, even if it works, maybe it's still too much a drag to use for now? dunno...
/142/d0/42862/1.html

- pardon if this is rehashing elementary, but any bad packetloss probs? even with all that speed it sounds like you're getting (sounds terrific!!:) , you maybe shouldn't leave the 'max bandwidth' pref at max - wonder how much sl is pulling on the line. if you're getting redbar, then try notching the pref down by 50 or 100 or so until you get minimum loss, max speed.

- a lil' workaround to not getting frozen; once i realized that i was rushing/flying into areas that hadn't loaded yet, i'd get frozen in midair, fall through floors, etc. i started watching the minimap much more carefully, and not rushing into grey areas that hadn't dl'ed yet; stopping short, i'd idly glide the area until the way ahead had rezzed, then fly on.

hope this helps... look around at other threads also; there's plenty more little nitty-gritty tricks to try, if none of this works. take care!! :)

Hmm... Thanks for the tips Nyoko, but unfortunately none helped in my case. I'm wondering if it really is the fault of the ISP, ie. Tiscali. Anyone else from the UK who is on Tiscali and has no problems with SL?

No point in changing ISPs now, off to uni in a few weeks. Of course, I expect SL will be blocked there anyway, so looks like I'm destined not to be able to use it. Oh well... lol

update
08-06-2005 13:57
Well after resetting my firewall (with guidence from the lindens) and deleting norton off the pc, SL worked brilliant.
For 24 hours, then it went straight back to the way it was aghhhhhhhhhhh!!!! *sobs*
I am so at the end of my tether with this!!
I'm pretty sure it's a problem somehow with my ISP Tiscali, although I'm not sure exactly how.
I've done all the things suggested so far, any other suggestions?
