Ever since the latest update from Second Life had come through, I've been unable to stay on Second Life for more then a minute and a half. The problem first starts that now when I open the game, it states that my graphics card drivers are out-of-date, despite the fact that they are not. Sometimes the game will forget my remembered password, so I may have to retype it in, then when I finally do get into the game, Everything loads up fairly quickly, but about a minute passes before the game completely locks up my entire system, forcing me to do a hard reset.
So far I've tried uninstalling and reinstally Second Life, Uninstalling and reinstalling my video card drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling the latest DirectX, and running it without any background processes that I don't need to have the game run in the first place. I'm wondering if anyone might have any suggestion as to what the problems may be.

you did not say what your hardware is but if your using a nvidia chipset based card, try getting your drivers from the nvidia site and not your card manufactures. The nvidia drivers seem to be easily messed up by vendors.

Ah sorry about that, I use an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. And I've loaded drivers from the website and the Windows updated system.

I think there's another thread about with the same problem, not sure if got resolved or not but you could look for that (sorry I'm too busy/lazy atm to find it for you ) Otherwise you could try installing the Omega drivers. It might be worth running a registry cleaner too, sounds to me like some flag's set wrong somewhere.

Well, the registry idea didn't work, and the omega drivers are being downloaded as we speak, thank you for your ideas as to solve the problem.

I should mention it'd be best to fully remove the old drivers using the separate ATI tool or Driver Cleaner just to make sure. Oh, I pulled up the thread I was talking about, no solutions I'm afraid and I'm not sure if it's even the same problem.

Once again, I'd like to thank all of you for your help as we try to solve this problem. Unfortunately, nothing has worked yet. On top of everything recently described, I've tried the driver cleaner, only to have the same problem happen. It seems to me that whatever the problem is, it's not a graphical issue. I've been able to get onto the game for a total of two minutes before it freezes the entire computer, this being whether I perform any interactions, or even if I let it remain idle for those two minutes. It seems to be very conistent, as I've yet to get anything less than those two minutes since we've worked on all of this. However, the interactions I have performed always have something to do with the avatar, so I am wondering if perhaps my avatar is the cause of the problem. Perhaps there is a bad coding somewhere along the lines in her that causes the game to freeze everything, although I find that unlikely.

It's hard to know what else to suggest without being able to directly poke your computer. If it was me I'd take it as a sign that it's time to rebuild Windows, but then I enjoy that. Guess you could try installing the latest drivers for you motherboard and flashing the BIOS to the latest version, but I'm guessing it won't help much, sorry.

Quite alright, while I too am familiar with just how much 'fun' reinstalling Windows may be, I don't think it'd help the situation. I'm thinking that it may very well be a problem with something in my avatar's inventory that is causing these freezes, perhaps a broken object or script. Thank you for your help though!

I'm certainly not an expert in the inner workings of SL, but I've learnt as much as I can about it since I started using it, and I really don't see any way anything to do with your avatar or inventory could cause the client to crash. Try logging on using a friend's computer or using a different account if you really think it is.

Same problem here.
My whole computer is freezed every 30-90 minutes and I must reboot it.
I've got an old GeForce 4 TI 4200 graphic card, with lasts drivers.
Some actions in preference settings seems to influence this problems :
* mute audio * less hard drive cache ... * graphics settings in general
... hope that can help you.
It don't come from a corruption on avatar : I've never had a freeze with my second computer, which has a Nvidia Quadro4 graphic card. And I play with the same avatar.

I've changed the settings in the preferences in just about every way possible with only getting the same result. I do know a friend's password though so I'll try to get on his avatar to see if the same thing happens.

Lots of people with ATI cards apparently, though not me (I've got a 9700pro if you're wondering). I guess it must be something to do with particular combinations of mobo chipset and card or something.

It's odd, I also have a Radeon 9700 Pro, but I'm consistently having the same problem.

I'll probably find out someone's tried before, but I made a thread for collecting info on chipsets in use with ATI cards: /111/3e/83432/1.html#post854011

I'm running a: AMD Athlon XP , 1050 MHz, the chipset is VIA VT8366A Apollo KT266A. I have 256 system memory (PC2100 DDR SDRAM) and AMI bios. The video card is the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Family. My total physical memory is 255 MB, while my total virtual memory is 1257. I've had this set up ever since I first starting playing Second Life three months ago, and this is the first time I've had this problem.

The new patch proves to have no effect on the problems in which I face, I'm wondering if anyone else has noted similar problems that are still going on after the new patch.

I'm still having problems, and losing my patience for the first time since I joined SL over a year ago. Every major update I've seen has run progressively worse than the previous ones. And this 1.8 patch takes the cake so far [sigh]

Problem Fixed!

I've discovered that the problem had been an audio issue all along. Apparantly there is a particular sound or something that when it is triggered causes the game to completely freeze the system. I shall be analyzing this issue further, perhaps a new audio card will be needed.
