From: Tanya Fratica I also experience problems, under wondows XP, but only with Vertex Shaders. Sadly that is, what makes Second Life look SO good (well okay, let me rephrase: It doesn't really look good without them)....
If I turn Vertex Shaders off, things are okay. If I turn them on, I get a memory access violation :/ yep

From: Suzhanna Rossini Yes, in Windows XP it works flawlessly. (Except for the "standard" client crashes every now and then...) I installed vista just for testing purposes on cat 7.5, I dont have issues with my current cards (9x00 and X8xx). I do not have an X1K or X2K series card so I cant gather info on that. It could be that its running fine because of the fresh Vista install. I cannot do any further testing with vista ATM as I need to return the computer back to XP. I thought that this, being the 'technical' forum, would be read by technical Lindens. But the Lindens are silly if they don't read it. It seems clear from many of the comments above that ATI Catalyst 7.5 drivers don't work with vertex shading enabled on newer ATI cards. WE know this now, but it seems the Lindens don't - so how are they supposed to help with all the support requests they're getting? Oh well..

Windows XP ATI Radeon 9800 Pentium 4 2.6 GHz 1 GB of RAM I went back to Catalyst 7.4, but my computer screen itself is messed up, a bunch of lines across the screen, no games work, SL doesn't load up. I don't know what to do.

When I boot up my PC, and it boots up to Windows XP, it gives me a black screen. I called them and they told me to log into safe mode (didn't work), log in with last known settings that worked (didn't work), and finally, reformat my computer (Don't have my XP disk anymore). Now, I had the idea of buying Windows Vista Home Premium, but is it possible to install it without going into Windows XP?

From: Maxx Antonelli Now, I had the idea of buying Windows Vista Home Premium, but is it possible to install it without going into Windows XP? Yes of course it is, Windows Vista is a product of its own, not related to Windows XP. However, there may be issues if you buy an upgrade version of Vista, you have to check that out with the sales person you deal with.

Thanks for the reports and the emails I got on this! Please make sure further info goes to our Issue Tracker — we keep track of bugs there. This issue is (thanks Shirley for the reminder!): * VWR-1050: The viewer crashes when vertex shading is enabled in combination with the latest ATI drivers (7.5) https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1050 Please have a look and vote to let us know you're affected by it. I'm also going to ask our developers about it today.

After 10 days of staying away, after the new update ( Windows 2000/XP: 1.17.0.12), I could log in. The late post is because I played more, read forum less *grins*
Finally, don't have the "buffer overrun detected" bug anymore.
It seems that the Lindens are working after all, though... still 10 days... *smiles bitterly*

I have been having most of the ATI reported bugs here after getting my HIS 2900xt in one form or another but one tread caught my eye.
It mentioned the c++ and buffer underun problem........ (i got that once but not when running SL couple days agoo)
When i instal the ATI catalyst 7.5 driver it actualy launches a seperate c++ files instal Anyone else noticed this ?.... But that c++ when it runs and instal it it says something like 2005
Might not mean anything but isnt that sort of ...old ? Is it me or could it simply be over writing already updated files i had whit older ones?
Cross's fingers and hope 7.6 that should be out in a few days fix the worst of whatever it is thats going on.

From: Alyssia Lane Dear Mr Linden
It's clear that there is a problem using SL with the latest ATI drivers. We, your loyal and trusting customers, are asking for a solution but we are not sure exactly where the problem lies and who caused it.
SL uses OpenGL. OpenGL drivers are installed with the ATI suite. For me, SL crashes instantly with ATI 7.5 drivers in full-screen mode, but not with 7.4 drivers. But I cannot reproduce the problem with other OpenGL applications. To the contrary, using the excellent OpenGL benchmarking program GLExcess with all 12 benchmarks I get 18121 xsMarks with 7.5 compared with 17924 xsMarks using 7.4. Google Earth uses OpenGL and it works perfectly in full-screen mode with Catalyst 7.5.
So come on Mr Linden, please tell us why SL doesn't work with new ATI drivers. After all, it's surely in your interest to find out - think of all those potential customers you are losing because they have powerful new graphics cards with the latest drivers and they install this amazing virtual world that everyone is talking about only to find it crashes.
Alyssia XP Pro SP2 1680x1050 32bpp (all settings high) X1950 Pro 512 AMD64 X2 4600+ 3GB RAM I noticed these Issues with the new Catalyst as well, theres something wrong while reading at a specific postion of the memory when using the shaders. Im quoting Alyssia because we have the same graphicscard, and I got another problem too. My average score of all summaries with GLExcess is 19242 while running the test in 1152x864 32 bit Full Screen. But in SL I only get an average FPS of 18 !!! I tried different drivers, I tried different settings (VBO enable/disable doesnt make a big chage) I have the fear that SL doesnt turn on hardware acceleration on my comp at all. Hope that someone reads this and can point me into the right direction, because were all ati/radeon users... My Sys AMD XP 3800+ 1500 MB Ram WIN XP SP2 X1950 Pro 512 MB AGP ASUS A8V Deluxe
