SL crashes directly (before even logging in)

Hi there,
I downloaded the current SL installer package for windows (1.12.3.6). After installing I tried to launch the programm. It first tells me that it is detecting my hardware, then I get a black screen with the SL-logo and "loading" turning and the login, new account quit,... buttons on the bottom. And that's it. After a few seconds CPU load goes to 100% and I have to kill the application. I captured the network traffic that is going on and saw that I get an TCP connection to secondlive.com established but nothing more. I run Windows XP with all updates on an Acer Travelmate 291LMi (Ati Mobility Radeon 9700). Any hints? Thanks in advance, Jonas

thanks but...

Hi,
thanks for your hints but that was not it. I dissabled my antivirus, same issue. Opend my firewall, nothing changes. I meet the recomended system specs and have the current drivers installed. In the specifications a ATI Radeon is mentioned but what about the Ati Mobility Radeon 9700? Does anyone run SL with that card?

something else?
11-18-2006 09:44
Hi again,
just wanted to ask whether I need any specific ports open for SL to run. When I said I opend my firewall in the last post I just meant the Windows XP firewall. I sit behind a NAT box though. Any ports that need to be reacheable from outside? (Just wondering...)
There seem to be a lot of users around having problems with crashing clients... Any soloutions in sight? Thanks again,
Jonas

Hi, I have the same issue with the SL and I'm running on a mobility 9700 - I wonder if this is an issue? I've looked for driver updates (I have a Sony S2XP) but can't find anything! Let me know if you find anything. Thanks.

your connection, is it wireless?
11-19-2006 10:24
One thing i was told by many users in this game, DON'T do wireless in game. Alot of unstability. Maybe quicktime, did you update that at all?

Hi everybody,
thanks again for your ongoing efforts. I opend all the ports mentioned in the SL wiki. Updated the gpu drivers, dircetX, quicktime is up to date, too. I'm conected via a standart DSL line. No Wireless loss etc... SL keeps freezing as soon as I start the ap. Not nice :-I A couple of monthe ago I had a first look at SL with the visitors client that was out then. Did work fine on my notebook. I still hope for a fix in the next update of SL client. lets see...

I'm also using a 9700 Mobility. This may well be the cause

I Have QuickTime 7.1
I disabled wirlles and connected by cable,
but always get the "Second Life crask logger" window after (or during?) "Detecting Hardware" phase.

Anyone knows if a log is available to understand what is going on during detecting hardware?

Thanks

There are a lot of similar threads dealing with similar problems.
I can understand that client code is buggy because immature, but this forum is under "support" category. Do I have too high expectations about?
Are posts someway tracked?

one thing that worked for me - nearly

In another thread (/111/73/147879/1.html) I found this hint (thanks to Shack Dougall):

> For ATI laptops, good drivers can be found at http://www.omegadrivers.net.

With the omega drivers I got SL running. I could walk around for good ten minutes before the next crash wich is more than I dared to expect ;-) While obviously not perfect, this is the closest thing to a solution I found here so far. Might work for some of you as well.
Good luck,
Jonas

Thanks Jonas!

Installing Omega drivers (3.8.252) made the magic (cheating with settings)

SL up and running and no crashes: lasting for hours

Tx! Hope to see you in SL.

another problem

I have the latest version of SL & I'm using an ATI Radeon 9800, I recently updated my graphics vid card, but now it says it won't work unless I download .NET Framework 2.0, without it I can't run set up for my ATI graphics setup. I had the program run once but each time I had to doanload the latest version. My head is spinning & I need help before I rebuild my cpu. @_@

.NET Framework is something you get from Microsoft. Goto http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and when it asks if you want to do an Express or Custom update, click Custom. If you don't have it installed, .Net 2.0 should be under the Optional Updates.

Fast Crash
11-26-2006 15:00
cool, thanx. I now have the program installed & was able to run another program to enhance my graphics card. But when I run SL it doesn't even load, it just crashes.

I'm so close to getting it to work, I can feel it

Not a good time to test it right now, Spikus:
