Since the update, most of the colors I had set in the color picker tool in the build menu, have been replaced by black. I relogged and it didn't help. I bugreported this (#354571). Anyone got similar problem? Snapshot: [img=http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/8921/menu001mm6.th.jpg]

I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one with a problem similar to this! Upon updating and logging in, I noticed that all of my chat colors in my prefs (with the exception of User messages) had changed to black. Also, the color for the particles that emit from my AV to a selected object had changed to black.
I was able to change them back to what I had them set to before, but every time I log out they change back to black.
Irritating!
Also, my menus are all black now, instead of the gray that matched the menu bar before.
I tried to call Live Help about it and they just told me to update my drivers. So I made sure I had the latest drivers... And guess what? Yup, the same problem still happens. I was going to try a fresh installation of SL, but I think I might just hold off until the patches start to come out...

I lost ALL of my settings including my carefully hoarded custom color palette that I use for a big build I help with. Did I lose all of my settings because I downloaded the client separately and installed it, rather than using the in-client upgrade? Or is everyone losing all of their settings in 1.11?

I didn't download the client separately, just let the outdated client request an update on startup, so that's not likely to be the cause. Also I updated the graphic card drivers 2 weeks ago. Weird thing is that it has kept a few of the color settings, not nuked them all. Edit: pinks, I'm having the same problem & bug-reported it (#354455) Edit #2: The rollback from last night hasn't brought my color palette back

From: Lex Neva Did I lose all of my settings because I downloaded the client separately and installed it, rather than using the in-client upgrade? The "in client update" is nothing more (and proabably a bit less) than "here, I'll get the install file for you!" And downloads the same setup program.

I updated via logging in, and lost all my palette colours as well. I'm glad I kept a couple of cubes with my common colours on each face which I can grab back - but it shouldn't have happened in the first place.
I'd say I'm glad I'm not alone, but it's a shame that a number of us are affected by this.

It isn't just colors in palettes - it also affects any changes you make to colors in the Preferences window, for example the chat text colors.
Anything that you edit gets saved out to the SHINY NEW XML prefs file. Sadly, it appears that whoever wrote the code that reads it back in prefers black - no matter what numbers are in there.

I'm having the same problem. Everytime I log back in I have to change my preferences, it's VERY irritating.

happened to me too

i usually leave avatar chat as a tinted yellow so that i can tell it apart from clean white of IM's, but logging into 1.11 chat text was all solid black, and while it does let me change it back to yellow, each login it reverts back to black on me now.

I finally uninstalled SL completely. Reinstalled and left the default colors. It seems to keep those fine. As soon as you change the color, on the next start-up it has turned to black. So keeping the defaults on a clean install is better than having them turn black I would say.

Preferences, Chat, etc.. SL IS ALL BUGGED!
07-20-2006 15:01
It isn't only the colors in the edit palate but also the colors selected for teh chat window! I also have to keep redoing my Preferences every single time I log on and also.. witht eh chat... when I am in my inventory it used to be that if I hit return I would automatically be taken to the message window where I type a message, Now when I hit enter that window diappears then I have to hit enter again to bring it back.. then I have to click IN the typing area just to type a simple little message such as Hi in reply to a Hi to me.
Another thing... the arrows in Edit when you rotate something, they are all screwed up! Use to be the blue was up and down, now it isn't.. NM they fixed that, I just checked BUT now when you exit the edit you zoom in on yourself and then you have to rotate cam back to where you wanted it to be... that can screw up when someone is trying to do detailed work! Hence I stopped makign things till SL fixes AGAIN what was working before their upgrade that screwed it all up!
THIS is why I left SWG cause they kept breaking what was already working just fine! And each "Upgrade" took people were starting to joke around.. Hey when is the next "Downgrade guys!" I bet SL hired those that used to work for SWG before Lucas took it back cause of the so called upgrades and made it more of a kids game now.

Same here ...

On color palette, as well as the color for my affects, as well as my chat avatar/system/object colors - all are black when I log back on.
I'd changed the UI interface size to 1.1 as soon as the update came out, I thought maybe it was tied to that since I have so many friends who didn't change it and aren't having the problems I am - how about everyone else, did you change it at all?
And yep, done the whole bug report schtick, sigh.

Okay, here's the situation. They moved to a new XML settings file format. This caused two things to happen:
1. Everyone lost all of their settings... except actually they were just misplaced. They're right there in settings.ini, and you can recover them if you want to by manually transporting them over into SL or into settings.xml.
2. The parser for settings.xml incorrectly reads color settings. This means any color settings get read in as zeroes, ie black.
Here's what it writes to settings.xml for, say, edit particles:
<EffectColor value="1 0 0 0"/>
But it can't read that. If you change it to commas though...
<EffectColor value="1,0,0,1"/>
The last number is the alpha value, and that needs to be 1, not 0. When you do this, it loads just fine, but then it immediately resaves it with the spaces. A temporary solution to the situation might be to get the settings file how you want it and set it read-only... hopefully SL doesn't barf on that.

^ Thanx for the info, all! Great investigation, Lex.
This is a known issue--will be fixed soon!
(So I can have my watermelon colors back too.)

what about those of us who lose ALL the preferences on restart? not just colors /111/b5/122527/1.html#post1162178color is really not something that would annoy me.. certainly not more then having to go thru all of the "help" message im constently getting every time i restart SL (or every time i crash, i should have said) also reseting your resolution, sound volume and all of the other settings all the time is getting on my nerves, badly.

Lex, thanks for the informative posting! I also received an email from Dan Linden stating that de-installing and then re-installing the client should restore the color palette ('til the next logout I guess). Haven't tested that myself yet.

Problem with that is, you'll want to change them back to your colors that you had. If you do that, the problem returns. I did a driver update AND a clean SL install, and it still does it.
