Anyone else notice lately that certain Base Terrain Textures either take a very long time to load, or not load at all - until you relog? I checked a few Base Terrain textures in the Tools and several never did load. Which could explain why they have been lacking inworld.
One "work around" recommended by LL was to 're-select' your Base Terrain Textures, Apply and relog. That seems to work until you visit a really laggy sim and then return to your 'home' sim.
I don't think it is my setup, connection, or client. Some sims "pop" their terrain textures when arriving, others may or may not load the Base Terrain Textures. Seems to indicate a server side issue at LL. Particularly, when Liaisons are recommending the "work around".
Just curious.

Yes, I use these textures quite a bit thinking that people are likely to already have them loaded. They're also well tiled and quite flexible when scrunched, stretched and tinted. But I've noticed, since 1.8 actually, that any given one won't load for hours on end for days at a time in any sim no matter what I do.
It's just another asset problem. When the lakes district low rez rock texture, for instance, won't load for me, nobody else can see it those three days either. I've not identified a pattern, but they seem to rotate intelligently as though the system knows it can't serve everything so it keeps a current list of keys it's just going to ignore. Maybe that why LL implemented the grey loading texture. Or perhaps I watch too much Spongebob.

Thanks For The Feedback...

Yes, it is very interesting - particularly since it seems to be getting progressively worse. You inferred that it might be related to the version updates. But, could it also be related to the much heavier load being placed on the asset servers to deliver content under high concurrency - say, in the 8,000+ range that we have seen lately?

Another Thread RE: Textures Loading Issues
07-15-2006 08:53
/142/ed/117307/1.htmlThere are even more threads that relate similar problems with textures either not loading or partially loading for the client. Seems to be both Mac and Windows - so, it continues to make me assume it is server side and general grid load issues. Hope LL is taking note and working to increasing their resources, both server and bandwidth, to carry the ever increasing grid load.

It's not simply "just another asset problem", LL keeps fiddling with these textures. They're among the ones they preload and one Linden comment said this was to blame for one of the bad "textures never load" problems a while back.
I wish they'd reduce the number of textures on sims where the texture heights are all below or above the ground level. There's no point in loading anything but the "level 3" texture on most of the sims on the Korean continent, for example, or anything but the "level 0" texture on many islands. Even if they don't have the software check for dud downloads, they could reduce the number of textures actually set in the estate tools... OK LL can't do anything about the islands, but they could at least set all the textures on mainland sims with a single "real" ground texture the same to cut down on preload time and contention between preloaded textures.
Even better would be to to use HTTP for loading full-perm textures like the ground textures, and then using one of the distributed web caches like Akamai to speed it up.

I've seen a bug in the past few weeks where a certain altitude of land texture NEVER loads fully for me. Oddly enough, if I turn the Avatar Detail down to "bump-mapped" or "normal" (ie turn off cloth) and relog, it fixes. If I then turn cloth back on, the land texture instantly becomes blurry. Is this what you folks are dealing with?
