Grats on your Powerbook, you WILL love it :D

(I don't visit these forums often now so replies are often delayed hehe)

Max out its memory, not only for SL but Macs generally love plenty of memory when it comes to speed. 768MB seems great.

Oh well better late than never finally got round to upgrading the memory to 768mb, and wow it made a noticable difference I now feel I can run SL comfortably on it

*does a little dance*

Del, good luck with your after sales service. When my G3 powerbook went wrong, nobody was in the slightest bit interested in fixing it. I went to the main dealers in London, two other places on Tottenham Court Rd and I've never received worse service in my life. I'm a happy PC camper now.

I hope you don't suffer the same thing!

The Apple Service Centers are pretty crap in the UK. I'd recommend contacting AppleCare directly for a repair. Thet are much faster and offer generally much better service.

When the hard drive died (luckily I keep regular backups, these things happen) earlier this year in my Titanium Powerbook, I took it to an Apple Service Center in the western USA. Not only did they replace my hard drive with a new one, but they also replaced the LCD screen because it had some marks from chafing against the keyboard, and replaced the outside frame because some paint was peeling. None of it costed me a cent, all because I had purchased the AppleCare 3-year extended service contract. Obviously well worth the $250 or so I paid for it. I'm definitely a happy Apple camper.

Mac fo' life!!!

Allot of people end up saving money, even if their power book never breaks down. The power supplies are rugged, but it is possible to break them. I know pc or mac portable. I'll go through at least one power supply per year. (3 power supplies x 65 per unit = $195) Plus with apple care, you can call apple tech support with questions for free for 3 years. Witch is really invaluable to the new or and or intermediate user.

While we're praising Apple's service...

Hard drive died on a Friday while on a trip. Called AppleCare Sunday night. Padded prepaid box arrived Tuesday. Shipped out Wednesday night from NY, arrive in TN Thursday afternoon. Drive replaced Thursday evening and shipped back out Thursday night. Arrived Friday.

Less than one week from initial call, which was on a Sunday no less.

Unfortunately I hadn't backed up, so I lost all my data. Mea culpa.

This was beyond the initial 1 year warranty, but thankfully I'd gotten AppleCare with my computer package.

How does one break a power supply?

Heard about power supplies going out from my PC-using friends but they have a habit of overclocking so I always assumed they used more power than their power supplies were rated for.
